The San Francisco Bay Area 18xx group is nominally a sub-chapter of SB-Boardgamers. We meet every Monday at SB-Boardgamers and play 18xx! We normally have enough 18xx players on those evenings for two 18xx games to be played. The primary purpose of the group is to teach the 18xx to new players, and thus evangelise and expand the hobby, so there's often a teaching game (usually 1889), as well as another game for the (wanna-be-)sharks. The group has a broad mix of skill and experience levels from raw beginners to reasonably experienced.

The purpose of this list, and subsequent lists each month, is to track the games we play and to afford a central venue for discussion of the games we have played and want to play. A master geeklist tracks each of the monthly geeklists: San Francisco Bay Area 18xx

For the sake of completeness, we'll also be including the other 18xx game playing that many of the same people get in during the month in these geeklists. As such it will include 18xx gaming we may play at Silicon Valley Boardgamers, Boardgame Addicts of the Peninsula (BAP), the SF Bay Area/Los Altos Games Day, Endgame Oakland, and random other gaming events. That I know of, across the larger group, we're generally getting around a dozen or more 18xx games played each month!

Other 18xx gamers in the Bay Area are absolutely encouraged to join the discussions and to list the games they play!

Aliza notes:

Mike Calhoon (Big 4, NYC@80) Aliza Panitz (Ship, MC, B&O 6x50), Ron Sapolsky (MS, Mail contract, Chicago, GT @60).

Ron would likely have been better off investing instead of floating a weak company.

B&O ran 3 2T out of Wheeling for $27/share in OR 1.2; I floated the IC at 150 and used its money to run the B&O for $78/share in OR 2.2 (4/6, 3/5, 3x2T). (Ron had sold one share to buy a 4/6 for the GT.) We called the game after SR 3.

We played #1 of the two maps this time.

4-player: Mike Calhoon, Aliza Panitz, John Hart, J C Lawrence.

Aliza narrowly avoided a bankruptcy by ~$30, passing that honour to me. I could have survived, but would have had to hand a brown company with a diesel to Mike, and so elected to bankrupt instead. Final scores ranged from $1,400 to $800.

Aliza notes:

I dumped a trainless company on JC while force-buying the second 6T with my higher-valued company.

Pity he had a few dollars more than me in his ensuing bankruptcy.

A 3T was bought a wee bit too early, allowing the B&O to head off the rails and we failed to fight the game back into containment after that.

Aliza notes:

The uncharacteristic openness of the board was due to (1) the absence of the NYC, which had gone into the zero end of the stock market taking lovely tokens with it, and (2) the financial absence of one player, coupled with the lowered paper limit, removing all incentive to float the final company (the Erie in this case.)

6-player. Aliza failed to stomp several newbies who didn't take loans after she told them they should.

I think this was as part of Tom M's scheduled 18xx period on Saturday.

This was the followup game after 1843. Andy, Jevon and Rich bowed out to do other things. Mike Calhoon joined us from his 2038 victory.

I bowed out as it was late, I was tired, and I have a limited tolerance for 1846.

3-player: Daniel Barnes, Mike Calhoon, J C Lawrence.

Starting on Sunday afternoon.

Company order: Lillebeo, IFT, Archimedes, RCS, Akragas

I paid $255 for $40 of private income (trigger, port and teleport), which I thought was rather cheap going considering the company order, and used my spare cash to hammer the market through the floor and then to buy paying shares. All 5 companies floated by the 4th SR. When the Archimedes was dumped on me, I ploughed twice, bought my privates for maximum value and then sold it down into the closed box. At that point we called the game as a long since fore-gone conclusion.

Company order: Akragas, Garibaldi, RCS, IFT, Archimedes

I paid $250 for $30 of private income (port and teleport), which I again thought was rather cheap going considering the company order, and used my spare cash to hammer the market through the floor and then to buy paying shares. Meanwhile the Garibaldi had teleported to Messina, had laid the only tile it was legally allowed to and had been running one train for $4/share while its stock price was hammered into the floor. By the 5th SR the Akragas had still not bought a train, but had finally built to the edge of Palermo. Meanwhile the Garibaldi ran its one train for $4 and had a stock price so low it could finally appreciate. Then the RCS finally floated for $68 -- all we could afford -- and the trains finally moved...

Daniel was caught with 6 shares of the Archimedes just as the 12H was about to be bought, blowing up Messina and closing the company (he'd never placed another token) along with $200 in the treasury. Meanwhile his Akragas (6 shares again) had been flirting with the "closed" box and if we'd not allowed a stack of do-overs would have closed with $300 in the treasury and possibly a 10H. Most of the 6Hs ran only once. Both the 8Hs ran only once. It was beautiful.

We called the game after Daniel forgot that his about-to-close Garibaldi shares were in fact still paper and bought a lot of shares he wasn't allowed to hold. As this involved intricate dances around two 20% shares, and we saw no way to roll-back sanely, we called the game there. I had the better routes and more shares, but still had another train to buy to best exploit them. Mike had the denser portfolio but fewer shares and no need for a train. Daniel...was in pain.

3-player 1849 in the hands of players willing to make the game sing, or at least to try and strangle it as it does, is utterly delightful.

Aliza, Mel Nicholson (a/k/a "the guy who taught me 1856".)

He floated 3 small companies, I had well-funded UP with bridge and meat. I laid nasty tokens with UP and then CBQ, and we called the game when I got both 5/7 trains.

He commented afterwards that while he was intrigued by the idea of a 2p 18xx, it's really not viable.

This also may have been his first exposure to a modern incremental cap game. For example, he trashed my companies' stock; I responded by having them use a portion of the proceeds to buy back the shares, maming them wealthier.
