My wife went on vacation with her family, and I am on shutdown at work this week. So a week with no work, no wife, no kids around. What else was I supposed to do? That's right! Game til it hurts! And I did just that. And my lovely wife and kids came home Friday, so I got to spend the weekend gaming with them. I picked up a copy of Top Race on Tanga, and while it's not the same edition I remember GrandSage teaching us at Origins a few years back, it is a huge hit with the kids!

It's been a while since I played anything (other than Chess, and even there the last game is weeks ago) with my wife, but it happened yesterday evening - we played a game of Snow Tails. She ended up winning, too, and she enjoyed the game - yay!

(She did take back a few turns underway, but it was her first game so that's perfectly legit to me. Also, the picture is from my solo five player test game on Friday.)

Other than that, I played a few games of Neuroshima Hex! against the Android AI, a few solo ones during a break while I worked a bit at the office - I wanted to test out the Steel Police against the Neojungle from Babel13. I still have plenty of custom armies that I haven't played with yet, too.

where we played all day:

Nightfall + expansions
The Castles of Burgundy
Survive: Escape from Atlantis!
51st State + promos
Hamburgum
Race for the Galaxy + expansions
Lords of Vegas
and finished up with Time's Up! Title Recall!

It was all fun, and I was especially glad to get in another play of Hamburgum.

Sunday we stayed home and played games most of the day.

We started off with Qwirkle which I lost again.

Then we spent about 4 or 5 hours learning and then playing Duck Dealer. What a brain burner! We are hosting a Splotter Day at our house in a couple weeks and wanted to be ready for this to hit the table then.

After a short break, we decided to play Race for the Galaxy, 'tournament style'. By that we mean, play multiple games, two-player advanced, with the winner of each game losing a random Action Card from their hand. Cass won 4 of the 7 games we played, even winning without Settle or Production cards blush

It was crazy hot this weekend so stayed indoors most of the time. That included a few games with the family.

Friday
1x - Rivals of Catan - Dusted this off for the win 13-11.
1x - Bohnanza - Daughter chose this for after dinner game.

What started as a friendly game of Rivals (is that possible?) ended up being the fun grudge match of the weekend for my wife and me. She hates to lose so we were going to play this one until she won.

Saturday
2x - Rivals of Catan - Wife wanted a rematch I won first 13-8, she won second 11-13.
1x - Summoner Wars - Won with Sand Goblins against friend playing Shadow Elves.

I texted all my iOS friends to tell them about the Summoner Wars app. My hope was they would get hooked and I'd have some more opponents to play. My daughter had a project in the morning with one of those friends' girls so I brought the Master Set and taught him how to play face to face to get him started. Set the hook.

Sunday
2x - Tobago - Played 3p first and got destroyed, but returned for big win in second 2p game.

Tobago is a bit light for my taste but at the end of our first game in which I was utterly destroyed I realized we are not leveraging the amulets near enough. In game two I made it my goal to try and use them a little more and won big. There may be more to this one than I was resolved to believe, so fun factor went up a bit, but not enough to change my general impression of its lighter fare.

meeple Keep playing...

Last week, we played the The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game – The Redhorn Gate scenario. Took us a long time to get to Caradhras and only got through it thanks to Dain & Faramir. Without them, we would have been utterly decimated. Now, we lost only Theodred and Bilbo (and a load of allies) on the way.

On Saturday evening, we played A Game of Thrones (first edition) with five players. I was Lannister.
Early game, Greyjoy expanded to the logical areas of Seagard and Flint's Finger and made a ploy for the Sunset Sea, where it defeated a Tyrell fleet, but was that same turn kicked out again by the Tyrell's second fleet, aided by Lannister Support (I had initially declined from supporting either player). Tyrell expanded towards Sunspear & the Reach. Sunspear was the target of fights between him and Baratheon, who took the SE sea. Stark build a fleet in his three sea zones and took the Eyrie. There were never any fights between Stark and Baratheon except one little raid on support which prevented Stark's first attempt at The Eyrie.

Midgame, Tyrell kept getting involved in fights - he burned through his hand twice (+a regrowth of Mace Tyrell through Wildlings attack!) faster than I moved through my initial hand... Stark overextended slightly by taking Seagard yet getting surrounded - luckily for him he took next turn's Iron Throne and fought his way out before getting his 4xKnights eliminated. Subsequently, his forced succeeded in smacking Greyjoy, who never recovered and ended the game on his first turn position. I moved to take the Reach, but counterattacks from the Tyrell (who abandoned the East to the Baratheons) retook the Reach and eventually slaughtered (once more with Mace) the Lannister army in the Marches. Baratheon was almost out of the game somewhere around turn 6, but the Tyrells gave him a breathing space and he quickly grew back to five strongholds.

At the start of turn 10, Baratheon had five strongholds (KL, DS, SE, SS, CP), Stark had five (WF, MC, WH, TE, SG), Greyjoy had 2 (FF, Pyke), Lannister had three (Lannisport, Riverrun, Harrenhall) and Tyrell had three (Reach, Oldtown, Highgarden). Stark seemed poised to take Crackclaw point, Tyrell to take Lannisport, Baratheon's armies were spent, Greyjoy could only hope to defend what he had. I saw that I could take the Sunset Sea and thus use my Riverrun garrison to take Oldtown & Highgarden and hopefully take Crackclaw point with my Harrenhallers. That seemed my best move, but then cursed supply came up and moved me from 6 to 4, and Stark from 4 to 5. Given that I no longer would win tiebreakers versus Stark, I had to hurt him instead.

I lost Lannisport (I was stronger, but my lone footman got killed by Loras), then sent my fleet up north to defeat the Stark Fleet (Tywin faced Eddard for no losses on the Stark side, who retreated to his port). Subsequently, my Riverrun garrison took Winterfell, to the utter surprise of the Stark Player - especially when Cersei led the assault, removing his move order on the Eyrie (so he couldn't attack CrackClaw point). I then attacked Crackclaw point and Stark supported my attack. I'm afraid I was Kingmaker here. If I didn't attack, the result would be Baratheon 5, Stark 4, Lannister 3, Tyrell 4, Greyjoy 2). If I *did* attack (and I did), the result would be Stark 4, Lannister 4, Tyrell 4, Baratheon 4, Greyjoy 2). And thus I attacked, to go from third to second place.

Spoiler (click to reveal)
We were talking about the Starks supporting the Lannisters who had just sacked Winterfell and decided it was not *that* unlikely ... either they hadn't heard of the fact yet, or it was Bolton's men securing a victory for the "Starks"

On Sunday it was my birthday, and my wife decided to give me a day with lots of gaming. We played five games of L5RCCG (thanks again when you read this!).
* My Crab Kisada & family
Spoiler (click to reveal)
(incl. adopted oni "son"
versus Dragon. (her money didn't really come and I overran her guys)
* My Crab deck versus her Unicorn (very close game, she won in her very last attack - however, the win was mostly in her use of the Kolat Oyabun and especially the Obi of the Sun Goddess).
* My dishonour deck versus her Yoritomo's Alliance deck. I just made this deck, and was happy how well it ran. Poor Yoritomo couldn't get too many men on the field, especially not against my 11 province strength.
* Lastly, my Crab versus her Crane. Another quite close game. Cool duels all around, finally a play of "Head of my Enemy" when O-Ushi got killed, Daidoji Uji XP with Bloodsword finishing off a Yakamo-no-Oni ... it was great! She won with still a couple of provinces left, but it was closer than she liked I think

Yes, Uno. Here's the back story. My wife and I frequent a local Chinese takeout place on a regular basis. The owners' kids are always there, and they usually look bored out of their mind. They're 5 and 8 years old; the older one speaks English well, the younger one not so much. My wife suggested we get them a card game they'll be able to play on their own. I picked up Uno because it was cheap, and I knew they'd be able to handle it. My 2-year-old son saw it and wanted to play. So, I grabbed my own copy and taught him, sans the draw 2, skip, and reverse cards. With a little help, he was able to play, and he even learned how to say Uno.

Candy Land - My son's favorite game. I roped my friend into playing, too. Then, my son went to bed, and my wife joined us for a game of Cartagena. After seeing the board and the cards, my friend said, "This seems an awful lot like that Candy Land game we just played." My wife destroyed us. My friend managed to get 3 pirates on the boat, and I had none.

4 games of Dominion with my wife, my mother-in-law, and my brother-in-law. We played with all expansions except Alchemy. My wife won twice and had most overall points. My brother-in-law won the other 2 games. He's improved his game quite a bit due to playing on Isotropic on a regular basis. I finished 2nd or 3rd every game. My mother-in-law was experimenting with the cards and got killed every time.

Quiddler with my wife and a couple friends. My wife and I played as a team since we were in the process of putting our son to bed. One would attend to him, while the other played, and then we'd trade off. We won by a lot, thanks to my wife putting up 60+ points in each of the last 3 rounds.

One friend left, and the remaining 3 of us played 3 games of Dominion. Our friend is not very experienced and only plays once every few months. Still, she absolutely loves the game and enjoyed trying new cards every time. She did a great job of action chaining in one of the games. I won twice, and my wife won once.

Had a great day of gaming yesterday. Friend came over and we played all day. My wife joined in a game and we finished the day with a game of Eclipse. First game with the alien races for me, and I can see how they spice the game up quite a bit. I definitely lost. The race that can co-habitat with alien ships is really powerful! I lean to say.... too powerful..? Regardless it is a very good game.

Also played a game of Lords of Waterdeep, it was a two player affair and the game scales good. I can see how more players would be superior but it still is a good game for two.

Played the 2nd day of Gettysburg in Battle Cry: 150th Civil War Anniversary Edition. The Confederates pretty much ran the field. I still love this game. Light, quick, and its Civil War!

The game my wife joined us was Automobile. Granted this game is better with more players, but it has been way to long since I've played it last and the three player game was quite fun and we were all very close.

As for fillers of the day, we played 2 games of For Sale. It still is my go to filler game. My neighbor joined in for those two games and they were fun.

Overall, a very full day of gaming and quite memorable! Great company, great food, and great people!

It was one of those weekends again where we were running all over the place and didn't get any of the gaming that we planned done. I went through Last Will with my wife on Thursday night and we were going to try to get the kiddos to bed early on Friday night to play, but that didn't happen. So it sat there all weekend, set up and ready to play, but no one to play it.

That being said I did get a couple games of Summoner Wars: Master Set in with my oldest. We split those games, her with the Sand Goblins and myself with the Vargath. Also a 3 player round of Bohnanza, handily won by my wife.

Oh and I forgot to add Friday, been playing it for a week or so now, and I still haven't won, but at least I'm getting closer after re-reading the rule book and discovering my huge error in playing.

Not too much in the way of board games this weekend. I mostly played a different kind of game, the anniversary game! My wife and I celebrated our 28th this weekend! We took a long ride, did some garage saling, had a drink in the park, a full day at the beach, an afternoon in our own patio with cold drinks and 2 suppers out including one at a Japanese place that our daughters gave us a coupon for. It was a great weekend.

Oh, and I did sneak in one game of Mondo with Stacey and Lindy!

I managed to get a couple of my coworkers over to my place for a game night on Sunday.

Dan showed up first so while we waited for Chris I taught him how to play The Battle for Hill 218. I won pretty easily but made a point of explaining the strategy behind my plays as I was making them. Chris texted me to say he was running late so Dan and I had time for a rematch. This game ran the whole way though all the cards as he had developed a firm grasp of how to counter my assaults, including turning back my troops from both the immediate left and right of the hill at the same time, a position that, at the time I made it, I thought was a sure thing. I think it was at that point that I lost the initiative and he won with superior numbers when the cards ran out.

By this point Chris had arrived in time to witness my defeat, so we switched to one of the newer additions to my collection: Eminent Domain.

I went with the Warfare/Technology strategy that I seem to favor. Chris adopted a Colonize/Survey heavy strategy that just tore through the planet deck, with some tech mixed in. We had to reshuffle the planet deck four times. Dan made the mistake of trying to do a little bit of everything. He liked the idea of having lots of choices, but wasn't able to to anything especially well.

In the early game I was behind in terms of points as I was focusing on tuning my deck rather than trying to do trade or flip planets, Researching out my Colonize cards and a few others. I flipped a couple planets and then shifted my focus to establishing some baseline technology: 3 Improved Warfare and an Improved Research. I trimmed out some basic Warfare and Research cards and flipped a second Metallic planet which gave me what I needed to eventually take both Survey Team and Mobilization. I Researched out some base Survey cards as Survey Team let me take a planet from the planet deck as an action rather than a role. I was able to flip a third Metallic planet as well.

I was able to take and flip a second Advanced planet, this one with a Research icon. I was able to use that take the Data Networks technology card (I might have been tempted by the Streamlining/Weapon Emporium but Chris took it already). This gave me enough research icons to take the level three Metallic technology, Productivity, on the very next turn. Between Productivity, Survey Team, Mobilization, and Advanced Warfare, I was able to make up a lot of ground in terms of number of planets, shooting past Dan and catching up to Chris.

On what turned out to be the last turn, I found myself with three Fertile planets and lots of Research icons. I used Mobilization and Advanced Warfare to replenish my fighters, took the last Research role card and claimed the level three Fertile technology, Dissension (not that it mattered at this point which side I picked), and with the effect from Mobilization flipped another planet. I was the last player in the rotation so the game was over, and my final push put me over the top: 41 to 38 (Chris) and 24 (Dan).

Their first game of Eminent Domain was a hit with both of them, even Chris, which kind of surprised me since he is very much in the Ameritrash camp. Another surprising thing was that the game ran for two hours even tough we were only playing until a single stack ran out, and I will add that the game did not feel long or drawn out at all.

So this brought us to the point where we were going to choose the big game for the night: either Dungeon Run or A Game of Thrones. In the end, A Game of Thrones: The Card Game won out.

In my case, I have not felt the need to buy anything beyond the Core starter box so Dan and I were going to play with two of the original pre-constructed decks. Chris used his King of the Sea cards that was about the same since he has the first edition that only came with one of each card. This was going to be Chris's first melee game and Dan's first game ever. Dan wanted to take the faction that "has Sean Bean in it" so he took the Starks. With Stark and Greyjoy in the mix I figured it would be most thematic to take the Lannisters. I lent Chris some Crossroads from my unused factions to round out his deck and we got down to business.

Instruction time included, the 6 round game ran for three hours, which was about what I expected. There was a great deal of back and forth, with Chris taking an early lead that got the concentrated attention of both Dan and myself that evened out the power a bit more between Dan and Chris. I was suffering a real dearth of characters with power icons, having none at all during the early game, leaving me completely vulnerable. My best bit of luck was being able to bring out Ser Jaime Lannister and give him Gutter Rat's Cunning. This turned me from a punching bag into a credible military threat, and since I only used him for military challenges, I was able to claim Dominance several times.

I made at least two significant mistakes: forgetting to use the abilities of Lannisport and Qyburn's Informers after winning an Intrigue challenge, and forgetting to use the ability of the Lannisport Honor Guard despite many opportune moments. That second one is debatable as on turn five Stark chose Valar Morghulis and everyone got wiped out. Because I forgot about the Lannisport Honor Guard ability it was still in my hand, which at least gave me something to work with. Greyjoy made a swift recovery, and with good use of titles and some manipulation, took his winning point of power in Dominance on turn six, leaving me at 13 power and Stark close behind.

Twice with my wife. Won the first game due to a bunch of cards dealing with the Well and never worrying about food because every round space had food on it. Lost the second game by a single point because I changed tactics midway and had to take a begging card.

Eminent Domain
I played a heavy colonize strategy and surveyed whenever I had the chance. Finished with 8 colonized planets and 25 points thanks to Improved Colonization.

Dominant Species
Epic game of Dominant Species. I was the insects and grass was coming up on the Abundance action a lot. So I was able to fill an area on one side of the glaciation with grass and dominate that area pretty much uncontested. The birds flew up there eventually and stole some points, but couldn't dominate. I ended the game with eight tiles dominated for 36 points, which pushed me into the lead.

Even though we have four new packs (thanks to Tegarend), I made the guys only open one at the time to preserve the unboxing feeling. This got us all a few extra cards for our decks, whoo! The first scenario had our poor characters mountaineering.

The willpower sapping effects were quite brutal, especially combined with the effect that said that characters with 0 willpower would simply drift into the deep cold sleep on the mountain and DIE. With two players down to two heroes, we finally made it through the mountains. Pretty exciting! Nice to have a light-combat high obstacle course again for variety.

Brent, Bill, Blake and myself got together for our weekly Saturday get together. Rich goes to the Canton get together on the first weekend of the month. As Bill was going to be late, the three of us fired up Guild Quest. A new game that Blake had just purchased.

The game sort of reminds me of Hera and Zeus in the battle style (and the tableu set up). Essentially, you recruit heroes with varying talents. The goal is to be the first to obtain 3 victory cards which randomly show up. You can get these victory cards by having valuable characters (worth lots of gold), or by having lots of point cards (obtained through the game by various means). Then there are the battles. There's a technique and strategy to the game, albeit a bit slow. This type of game I would expect to take an hour with 3 people, and it was nearing 2 when I finally won. Not a BAD game, per se. Just overstayed its welcome.

The next game was Mecanisburgo. Blake had this one for a couple weeks and wanted to get it out. So, we broke out the rules and the bits and plunged ahead. For all of its rules and 80+ icons on the cards and board, this one breaks down to a worker placement game in the end. You have characters with abilities and you send them to the board in order to get the cards that are available at each site. There are character cards (for you to hire) and there are property cards (which can be used to help you during your turn). Each location is resolved in order, the winner getting the card at the site. At the end of the turn, there are VP cards that can be bought if you have the right combination of attributes. Simple, right? Well then why can't they write rules that are that simple? Page after page of nonsense (or so it seemed). The rules were there, you just had to hunt for them. The game isn't all that bad (had an Android vibe to it. The game went rather long and wasn't really scratching the itch of the players. I'm sure that there's a fun, thematic game in there. There are just so many better worker placement games out there. I just don't see a place for this one.

That was all the gaming this weekend.

A slow weekend for gaming. I played one game of Pandemic: On the Brink. We played a three person game with five epidemics and pulled out a win. It has been a long time since we have been able to do that.

Infinite City- We also played a three player game of this, which I won.

HYPERBOLE! It's like the greatest thing ever!!!
mbmbmbmbmb
Lots & lots of games this weekend (DexCon).

3 games of Automobile, which is a personal favorite. A great game of risk assessment. Everyone enjoyed this very much.

3 games of Cyclades, all with the Hades expansion. Even when players were getting their asses handed to them by others, they were having a great time. I have a feeling most of them intend to buy their own copies.

3 games of Hansa Teutonica. Again everyone had a good-great time, and a number intend to buy their own copies.

Thurn and Taxis. A good friend of ours won and she thinks it's because of my lucky game copy.

Half a game of Trajan, which is better than none. I was about to get my point-engine going when time was called.

Power Grid: The First Sparks. Another one that everyone seemed to enjoy, though it is proving itself to be a lot more cutthroat and unforgiving than it appears at first sight.

Ys. My buddy Keith won this, keeping his record in tact -- he wins every game he plays for the first time.

2 games of Belfort. Even with a player with moderate AP both games went off and everyone seemed to enjoy them. My own opinion of the game has steadily improved with each of these.

A 6 player game of Yggdrasil ... which we won. For those not in the know, Ygg gets progressively harder with each player you add. Winning with 6 is nigh impossible. Fortunately we did everything right and did not allow our streak of bad luck get to us.

Taj Mahal. The other players seemed to slog through the decision tree for the first 6 or 7 turns, but then things seemed to click. Not a hit this year, but there's always 2013 (unless the Mayans are right!)

Cuba with the Cuba: El Presidente expansion. Everyone had a good time, and 2 of the players went out and immediately bought this game. This is a game that grows more on me with each play and I am surprised at how much fun can be had from this heavy a game.

Nefertiti with the expansion is a game I always enjoy, and this was no exception. The other players also had a great time. This is the most different game in my collection, but its unique qualities hang together quite well and I am more than a little surprised that it is not rater higher around here.

Last Will also had players enjoying themselves, even if more than one scratched his temples at the choices to be made (it is a heavier game than the graphics would lead you to believe).

There were also a couple of quickies -- Dominion, Emminent Domain, Apples to Apples -- that rounded out the weekend.

Started on Friday with:

2x Quarriors!
Taught this to some in my game group and they loved it. Played 2 games back to back and would have played more if it were not for time.

1x Pirate's Cove
An oldie brought back to life. Played an very enjoyable 4 player game.

Saturday night consisted of:

1x Pirate's Cove this time with four players. Much more interactive game in which my wife won easily.

1X Cleopatra and the Society of Architects
Another oldie brought back out and played with love. A fantastic 4 player game in which my friend James won.

Sunday:

1x RoboRally
An old longtime favorite comes back out and I won in this four player game.

1x Lords of Waterdeep
Our newest favorite hit got played last with a full 5 players in which Lisa won.

All in all a great gaming weekend.

Friday
1x Labyrinth: The War on Terror, 2001 - ? - D-Day Dice arrived on Thursday, but with only one game opponent Friday night, we decided to finally get my copy of Labyrith to the table. Both had skimmed the rules and been a tad befuddled, so we went straight for the playbook as many have recommended. We read aloud our parts (I was the jihadists) and once we reached the end, we continued for 2 more turns (~ 1/2 the scenario).

I really enjoyed it and feel like we could pull it out again this week and compete.

Saturday
2x D-Day Dice - There is only so long that a man can wait! While my wife was getting ready for a wedding we would be attending, I knocked out a solo play on the Exercise Tiger board, playing the Live Fire/Ammunition scenario. I was gunned down 2 sectors from the bunker.

After the wedding, I played another game with the same setup and managed to bust the bunker with ease.

1x Fiasco - Saturday evening was interesting. My Labyrinth partner from Friday was coming over to game again when I got a call from a couple the wife and I had wanted to make plans with for a while. They also game, so after making sure it was okay with everyone, my twosome turned into a fivesome. What was probably going to be another whack at Labyrinth turned into the "Hollywood Wives" playset. The first time around the table was a lot of fun, but the second time it started to slow down quite a bit. I think we over estimated out ideas for the setting. We also keep running into the scenes being to long. It took us 2 hrs to get through the first round and we cut out two scenes. We then doubled up the dice for Act II so everyone only made one scene.

Sunday
1x D-Day Dice - A full complement of four players. Again, the map was Exercise Tiger and we played the full scenario. We made it to the bunker with relative ease. It was a big hit and I expect us to attack the more dangerous landings soon.

3x The Resistance - After dinner, the four of us from D-Day Dice, along with the host's wife, played The Resistance. The spies won all three games, of which I was a part of the spies for the first two.

A very good weekend of games.
