These are some smaller games that I like a lot. Despite their small size, they are provide quite a bit of entertainment. I decided to make this list a little more challenging by omitting the Kosmos 2-player line, since most of these are obvious choices and merit their own list (which has been done). Feel free to add any games that fit the bill that:
1. are small, hence portable
2. play well with 2
3. don't take forever to play
4. are not in the Kosmos 2-Player line-up

Matching tiles together always has a soothing effect. I get this little burst of joy, making them fit, watching the map grow, tile by tile. Easily one of my favorite smaller games. Match tiles, place farms, then place fields in the best positions to cut off your opponent. Fun and fast, especially if you decide just to play 1 rather than 3 rounds.

Great choice! I also like this game a lot, although I don't seem to be playing nearly as many 2-player games as I used to. As you said, it looks great, plays quickly, but packs a lot of angst and decision-making into a short amount of time.

I never play three rounds -- just one game is fun and satisfying.

Another good 2-player tile game that's quick is Oceania but if you have Fjords in your collection, you probably don't need both.

I've played this one in a few cafes. It's definately a great game when played away from home but it lacks the substance to be played seriously anywhere else.

I'm another fan of Fjords. It's one of my favorite small and quick 2-player games, when I don't have time or the energy for something like Tigris & Euphrates or Caylus. I often don't play the full 3 rounds either. I really like how the game is split into two phases, with the first reminding me somewhat of Carcassonne, and the second of Through the Desert a little. An interesting game, and most certainly worth the $11 it cost.

I also love this game as well. Very cool to see the the way each land that is formed is different. The fact that I can fit the game in a Deck Box and take just about anywhere is super. This was purchased at GenCon last year and played probably 10-15 times that weekend. It probably has close to a hundred plays by now.

This is my favorite 2 player game. I wouldn't have thought it would be so nice but trusted in my fellow Geeks and picked it up. It's a big success.

This game has all of the attributes I like...2 player, tile laying, abstract strategy, yet I do not like it. I find it too boring to play three rounds of this game. I have even played with only one round, and even that didn't hold my intereset. Very strange.

My wife and I enjoy this game a lot, but we never play three times in a row. Each round takes us about 20 minutes. Usually once is enough, occasionally twice.

I liked this one so much I bought another copy and put little stickers on the houses and field markers and now we can play with FOUR! It plays pretty well too.

Interesting note:

The picture you showed actually depicts an illegal situation in the game.

This is like Yahtzee on steroids. It took a few plays, though I warmed up to this one once I became familiar with the characters. If you like rolling lots of dice, this is worth looking into

I made a quick "mock up" of this to try with my wife and we both thought it was just OK. I wondered about it getting better or worse with additional plays and based on your comment I'll give it a few more tries.
