Every game has at least one rule that, if you don't get, makes much of the action pointless or ensures that you will lose. When teaching the game to new people, you will be sure to stress that rule over and over, since so much hinges onit. And, invariably, at some point the new player will claim fervently that no, you NEVER told him that rule because if you had, he would NEVER have made that play. Let's hear the game, the rule, and if you wish, the story.

Winning battles is only a tool.

Later: How'd you win? I control most of the board!

Yeah, people tend to forget the object of the game. Combat isn't the objective!

Others:
1: you can toss cards for money
2: third parties can play cards in combat
3: my homebase area is my homebase area no matter who "controls" it.
4: only red missions require you to actually win a battle to play them.

Friend 1: What's this?

Me: A wormhole. You can go through it here and your ships come out there.

Friend 1: So I can fly out to the other side of the map?

Me: Yep, it's like the hexes are adjacent.

Later...

Friend 1's fleet goes through the wormhole and is destroyed in a big battle. Friend 2's counterattack flies through and attacks Friend 1's homeworld.

Friend 1: WTH? How can he do that?

Me: You can fly through either way.

Friend 1: YOU DIDN'T TELL ME THAT.

NEVER show your loyalty cards unless you are intructed to.

I have a friend who always thinks he's stumbled upon the one time where it is harmless to show his loyalty card, and it never is. He has shown his loyalty card in every game he's played so far, at least 3 or 4.

It completely astounds me that, no matter how much my new players laugh (and no matter how much I tell them to pay attention) when I tell them to move the mouse so the screen saver doesn't turn on and delay everybody, they're still completely shocked the first time it happens and everything goes top-over-tea-kettle. It's your fault the ship broke in half and set on fire. Not mine.

Red: "Okay, during ship construction, if you have at least one piece attached to your ship, you may look at the decks of cards. You may look at them for however long you like, and you may look at all of them, but you can only look at them one at a time. Those cards will tell us what we're going to encounter, so it's very helpful to know how to plan your ship. Got it, guys?"

Blue: "Yeah, sure."

Green: "Come on, let's start already."

Yellow: "Decks. Got it."

Red: "Yellow, put those decks down, you can only look at them one at a time."

Yellow: "Wait, really?"

Red: "Green, you need pieces on your ship to be able to look at the cards."

Green: "I don't remember you saying that."

Red: "Whatever. Construction's over. Blue, why did you put on all guns and like no engines? There's like 4 Open Spaces and no enemies."

Blue: "How do you know that?"

Red: "I... looked... at the cards."

Blue: "You never said you could do that! If I had known that,"

Red: "Keep talking. I'm going to go chug a bottle of Jack."

Shuffle your discards if and only if you NEED to draw cards and your deck is COMPLETELY empty.

Yes, it matters. No, I'm not being a jerk. I don't want to hear you complaining about how you're not seeing that Gold you bought when you keep shuffling too early to draw it. Dominion completely breaks the moment you cut corners. Just follow the stinking rules.

You play Action cards to your Play Area.
You play Treasure cards to your Play Area.
You discard played cards when you Clean Up your Play Area.

You do not play Actions into the discard pile.

No, I'm not being a Rules Lawyer. If you play your actions into the discard pile, your Laboratory will become an infinite combo by itself. The moment you cut corners in Dominion, the game completely falls apart. Just follow the extremely easy rules and enjoy the game. There's nothing to be gained from being lazy.

* The Scientist can cure a disease with only 4 matching cards instead of 5. This still requires an action and a research station.

I have 4 blue cards so I can cure blue. "No, you need to be at a research station". Well that's dumb, what's the point of that special ability then.

* The medic can remove all cubes of a disease for one action and when the disease is cured they can do this without an action.

Tick...Tock....

But you said that I can just cure all of the cubes without an action.

In fact for a Co-operative Game the first time our family played this game it just turned into a big fight...Ughh! But, we have now overcome our setbacks and everyone has come to grips with the rules.

There is one more rule I need to tell you. You can steal gems...(I know I have lost their attention at this point)....but you can only do this if your canoe is empty and you land on the same space as another player with a gem...WHEN YOU ARE TRAVELLING UPSTREAM ONLY....OK, so you have to be travelling upstream and end on the same space as someone with a gem.

15 mins later.....

No, sorry you can't take that gem because you are not travelling upstream. "What, but you never told me that."

5 mins later...

No, sorry you can't take that gem. "Yes I can I am travelling upstream!" Yes, but you have to end your turn on the space with the other player. "What, that's not what you said...you keep changing the rules on me, why didn't you tell me that in the first place?"

Its kind of a borderline thing but my regular group of gamers and me played 1830 millions of times as well as variants. Now the India version is a nice (if long game) and tracklaying (engineering) is essential.

Everytime before we begin I repeat - remember there is standard gauge and narrow gauge, in standard gauge there is no tile that includes a 10 station with a broad curve in it. The only curved tile with a 10 station in it in narrow gauge has the sharp turn.

So just to be clear this tile does not exist in standard gauge:


Everyone got that - repeat after me, no broad curve with 10 station in standard gauge.

We start bidding for the companies, start building:

Player S: Can someone hand me the broad curve 10 station in standard gauge I can't seem to find it.

Me: That's because it doesn't exist in 1853

Player S: What! That means I will take two more turns to connect my city and (ok I exagerate) blast through a Himalaya.

Me: Well tough cookie.

Player S: You never told me that tile doesnt exist in 1853 - it exists in all other 18XX variants. You should have warned me.

Me: I did and this is not the first time you have forgotten this.

Player S: Well I guess I have no chance now, this game will take hours and I will have no chance at all...

After a particularly slow, grinding first game.

"I think I'll petition, playing 3 of the same role as a different one."

"What???"

I had mentioned the rule once, but it was quickly forgotten, and my remembering it was met with a chorus of "If only I had known that..." One player disliked the game so much (probably somewhat because of this) she said she enjoyed Nuclear War a lot more.

Merlin cards can do one of four things:

1.) Remove the most recently played black card on a specific quest;
2.) Remove one siege engine;
3.) Remove one Pict/Saxon warrior; or
4.) Three can be played together to cancel one just drawn special black card.

Guess which option isn't printed on the card and easily forgotten? Guess which one I need to constantly remind people about?

Player X gets a card for a sprawled lot with a six-pip die in it, making him the boss of a 4 tile casino. Player Y: "Wait what happened?" Me: "You lost that section because he drew the card for that lot." Player Y: "So I just spent $40million to sprawl to that spot and I lost it. ugh". (In player Y's defense, she was a good sport about it)

This is surely the new poster child for people complaining about a rule that they didn't listen to at the beginning of the game, isn't it?

If I hear one more person complain: "But you didn't tell me I had to pay 3VP for every tile I have in excess of the player with the fewest" I will force-feed him a black Meeple.
