Every game has at least one rule that, if you don't get, makes much of the action pointless or ensures that you will lose. When teaching the game to new people, you will be sure to stress that rule over and over, since so much hinges onit. And, invariably, at some point the new player will claim fervently that no, you NEVER told him that rule because if you had, he would NEVER have made that play. Let's hear the game, the rule, and if you wish, the story.

This one has a lot that always seem to get the new players, and counter crashing is always at the forefront of confusion:

1. If someone crashes a 4 gem at you, you can't counter crash or respond with a crash react in any way.

2. You can't counter crash or respond with a crash react if the attack makes you ante gems

3. You can't counter (counter) crash or respond with a crash react if the net number of gems sent to you by a counter crash is zero.

4. Those arrows give you actions to play DURING YOUR TURN. YOU DO NOT PLAY THE ADDITIONAL ACTIONS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ACTION YOU ARE RESOLVING (seriously, this one drives me crazy).

These 4 are the absolute worst for new players completely glossing over and forgetting. You can tell them a hundred times, but the first time it comes up in play, they'll forget all about it. #4 is a mistake that only non-dominion players seem to make, which is why I usually insist on teaching my friends/family members dominion before puzzle strike (plus dominion's fun too!)

There are others, and those generally include Master Puzzler and Double Take (if it ends your action phase, you can't use the extra actions! Double taking recklessness is an absolutely terrible idea, incidentally)

"... and in the final roll-off, if there's a tie for the number of dice, it goes by the number of pips-- i.e., seven 6s are going to beat seven 1s."

Player nods and continues diddling with his cell phone.

Fast-forward to the final roll-off in a three-player game.

"Now, remember, if there's a tie for number of dice, it goes to the player with the higher-numbered of-a-kind."

Player proceeds to use his turn to produce a set of eight 1s, and is confident that he will win the game. The rest of us roll, and roll eight 5s (me) and eight 6s (last player) respectively. When we announce the latter was the winner, the first player gives me The Look.

Rather than hold firm, as we should have, the winning player suggested we make it a three-way tie, which I thought was rather gracious of him.

Despite my attempts to clearly explain how cards must be played... pretty much every game, at least a couple players will make a few attempts to place a card sideways or askew to the rest on the table, or break other placement rules.

The most epic thing happened in a game of Saboteur on BGA.

I explained 99% of the rules on Skype beforehand. Here's a specific snippet:

[10:11:59 PM] Grant Fikes: The saboteurs win if all of the cards are depleted from the draw pile and from the hands, and the gold hasn't been found.

In the second round of that game, one of the newbies, a saboteur, forms the winning connection to the gold, thereby losing the round.

Not exactly "you never told me that rule", but when I played this game last night, one guy seemed to think it was a good idea to have dominoes he couldn't play, when I explained that the goal is to be the last player to be able to play a domino. I guess he thought that means playing your last domino as soon as possible by making some unusable? Whatever; I know now to clarify next time that you want to play as many as possible.

Playing the game, defeating hazards in the Green phase. Get toward the end of the phase and notice there are only a few hazards left. I begin to wonder what happens if I've defeated all hazards before the Red phase. Look into rulebook:
1. Draw two hazard cards.

I should have been drawing two cards and discarding one each time. Mathematically no way to have no hazards left before the Red phase.

Solo game you say? The rulebook was open right next to me as I started playing, and I still missed it.

*facepalm*

Though of this list the other day. It just keeps on giving.

I always explain to new players that Wings of Glory is a pretty simple to learn game in that the first part of a turn in planning movement by sequentially placing three movement cards face down on your console and the next three turns you execute the manoeuvre according to the card and shoot until all cards are resolved then it’s back to the planning stage.

After this I make a point of explaining there are a couple of rules about which cards you can place down in which order i.e. you can’t have two stalls in a row and if you want to make an ‘Immelmann’ turn it is straight forwards, straight back(i..e the ‘Immelmann’ card) and straight forwards in that order. If you’re doing it between turns these handy counters help to remind you where you’re up to.

I’ll also do a demo with a model and show the manoeuvre step-by-step.

Of course later in the game the new player will sequence their cards to show turn, ‘Immelmann’ and turn again. When queries they’ll say "You never told me".

I did, but nevermind, run your movement as you planned it and learn for next time and no, I won’t make you take damage for an illegal manoeuvre.

I always go over all ten cards, and leave a list of the card types face up for reference:

With this card, you can advance without spices, using only the ships.

With this card, you can advance without ships, using only the appropriate spices.

With this card (shown in the middle of the bottom row in the image above), you can advance with money instead of spices and ships, using 6, 12, 18, or 24, depending on which level you are advancing to. You can still advance only one level at a time.

Inevitably, someone either tries to advance from the third level to the fourth level with 6 gold (instead of the correct 18), or from the first level all the way to the fourth level with 18 gold.

"You may not play two identical cards in the same turn."

Players most commonly forget this with the bonus cards, claiming in the scoring, "I have two cards each with 3 VP for nine farmers, so that is 6." I have also occasionally had a player try to play 8-income cards in two different provinces on the same turn.

Nobody ever tries to use two master builders, which is the most common situation in which you would want to use two of the same card (building two pyramids for 10 gold rather than 15).
