What is the lowest-ranked game here on Boardgamegeek that you rate a 10? If you have no 10s, what is the lowest-ranked game that you rate a 9?

I've seen this kind of list done before (e.g. What is your lowest ranked 10?), but it's been a little while now, and I'm very curious to see how the latest crop of games may affect a list like this. If you only have time to add a quick link to the game, that's fine, but I've included a little questionairre that you can fill out in your geeklist item if you wish:

How many times have you played it?
What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Why do you like it?
What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?

I'll start the list off with my entry (edit: which is no longer the first item on the list now that I've set it to sort by rank).

How many times have you played it?
50

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
The mix of theme mechanic is unique IMO.

Why do you like it?
Fast, straightforward, full of surprises and twists, hand management, unique theme (historical integration) ...

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
A personal favourite of my game group, with the same 3 guys we just don't say no to playing Liberté. I see other people not getting the same felling, as they don't play with same people over and over (outsmarting your opponents is crucial) , the rules are not great (variants needed) and in the end it's just a matter of personal taste

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Brass and Imperial

How many times have you played it? Somewhere in the ballpark of 50-75, I think. While I have played it recently enough that I know it's still a 10 for me, most of my games of this were from when this was a new, all those long years ago.
What, if anything, is unique about the game? It's a dungeon crawler that works really well without an adversarial or gamemaster player required.
Why do you like it? Chaos and unpredicability. A balanced game this is not. But I love it for all the absurd stuff that happens, and the real sense of accomplishment beating the odds when you succeed.
What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher? Probably for all the reasons that I like it. It's unbalanced, it's hard to win, and a few bad rolls can feel like the game is being really unfair. Add to that the prohibitive price point these days and it's hardly a surprise this isn't a top ranked game.
What other games, if any, do you rate this highly? Race for the Galaxy for pretty much exactly the opposite reasons.

How many times have you played it?
Around 80 or 90 times. Probably just under 100.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Tumbling dice down the stairs of a gameboard, to land at the bottom, without falling off, and preferably with a 6 showing. Spectacluar tumbles. Horrible bounces. Incredible shots. Last second defeats. You can get good enough to land on the bottom step every single time. But... you never know what the dice will show!

Why do you like it?
I love dexterity games as well as party games. This is both. This is awesome!

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
It can be difficult to find and the price is probably in the neighborhood of $80 US, so you gotta want it. Also, some people just don't like dexterity games.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
My only other 10 is Cribbage. Games I rate a 9.5 are Macao, Manila and Hive.

Times I've played it: I'd guesstimate some 20 times. This was one of the first boardgames I ever bought, and in the first few months of our boardgame group we played it every single time. It sees a whole lot less play nowadays (mostly because it doesn't handle more than four players), but is still a favorite anytime it does come onto the table.
What's unique about it: Just how agonizing the decisions are in this game. You have to place two pieces each turn, which at various points in the game is many too few, and at least two too many. Almost everything you do will benefit your opponents.
Why I like it: See the previous item. Our strategies for this game keep evolving. The palaces we build together end up ever more fragmented. Victory hinges on the most subtle machinations.
My guess on why it's not ranked higher: It's a rather old game in a world given over to the cult of the new. Also, the bits don't look too shiny, the game is rather abstract, and the wonderful and agonizing depth and complexity only come to the foreground once you've played this a few times in an experienced group.
Other games I rate this highly: Only YINSH, which can bend my brain out of shape in three different directions at once.

How many times have you played it?
50 times F2F plus I've played and run PBF games.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Unlike other hidden role games (Bang! Werewolf etc.) there is an in-game mechanism for finding out what teams other players are on.. in the form of Hermit cards... so the deduction element doesn't just rely on what other players say/do.

Why do you like it?
It's a hidden role/team game that has an in-built deduction mechanism, plays quickly, is a lot of fun and handles up to 8 players.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
It's not really well known.

How many times have you played it?
30-40-50 times over the years.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
The random powers was unique when it was released, and we play it powers face down and 2 each. Not choosing 'who' to attack is very interesting, it stops people getting picked on. The uneven powers mean that the player alliances have to balance against it, not the game rules.

Why do you like it?
Every time you play it, it is completely different. Every person you play it with, plays differently, even if one combo is completely overpowered, then as soon as it is revealed, everyone teams up to stop them winning. There is a large amount of randomness in the setup, but not that much in the play. I love the constant joining and breaking of alliances, and the game doesn't take that long either.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
There's a new version which has better pieces. Some people don't like unbalanced sides and probably hated it when they were munched by the Virus. Other play groups don't like conflict, or don't like backstabbing and alliances and it can be quite complicated to understand what the hell is going on for noobs.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Just two... Magic The Gathering (As long as you don't try and pay to keep up but draft or play rom a limited pool of cards) and Wallenstein/Shogun.

How many times have you played it?

Who knows? I'm the worst person when it comes to recording plays.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?

The real-time piece selection followed by the gut-wrenching and occasional epiphany filled puzzle segment.

Why do you like it?

There is nothing in gaming as tense and exciting as the piece selection round, balancing the desire for speed vs. the necessity of correctness.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?

It's not a brain burner, it's a mind melter. People who don't like spacial puzzles are just not going to like it or be able to follow along.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?

It's my only ten, there will likely never be another.

Boardgame rank 979.
How many times have you played it?
37 face to face, 10 online, over 100 against myself. (to familiar with the moves of characters)
What, if anything, is unique about the game?
This is the only game that has successfully captured the feel of 2D console fighting game like Street Fighter.
Why do you like it?
Short gameplay, tense decisions every turns, 18 vastly different characters in the basic set and I've only mastered just 2.
What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
1. The game is being published by a small company and lacks promotion.
2. The game rewards those who play this game repeatedly way more than most eurogames we play nowadays. With just 2-3 games (takes about 1.5 hours), this game is at most ordinary. With repeated plays, this game shines. Most players nowadays would rather play another game which offers immediate enjoyment.
What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
The only other game gets a 10 from me is Puerto Rico.

BTW, my review is here: Battlecon review

How many times have you played it?

65

What, if anything, is unique about the game?

BattleCON is the only card game I've played with perfect information about which cards are available to your opponent, no randomness, and a great deal of strategy. All of your cards are available to you, except the ones on cool down. Once you play a card, you won't be able to use it again for 2 turns. Also, you combine a style and a base into an attack pair, which allows roughly half of the cards to be the same for all characters, while still allowing different characters to play completely differently. The way that you simultaneously choose a move, and compare them is similar to Yomi, but there are many more options in BattleCON, and BattleCON has the added element of positioning. The way the cool down mechanic works creates an interesting strategic element of choosing whether to do the best thing right now, or setting yourself up better for the next 2 beats.

Why do you like it?

The characters are incredibly varied, the game uses hidden information perfectly, there is no luck, and outmaneuvering other players is incredibly satisfying.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?

It's not that well known. It's still only rated by 177 people.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?

Race for the Galaxy, Puzzle Strike, 7 Wonders. There are a few games I may end up adding, but I need to play them many more times before I'd be willing to raise them from a 9 to a 10.

How many times have you played it?

Only 4-5, but not for want of trying. It's really one of those 'all afternoon' jobs once you've done a rules explanation.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?

Do you know what? There's nothing much that's terribly unique. But it is a terrific blend of great mechanics from other games: area control, combat, action selection, gambling and diplomacy.

Why do you like it?

See above

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?

Eurogamers think it's Ameritrash; Ameristrashers think it's a Eurogame; everyone thinks it's too long for what it is.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?

Goa, Agricola, and the outstandingly silly (but unranked) Super Cricket.

How many times have you played it? - An awful lot, when I was younger. This was my "long game" of choice, starting from 1986 or so when I bought BattleTech: CityTech as a present for myself upon finishing my first-year University exams. I'm pretty certain that this was the first game I bought for myself with my own money blush

What, if anything, is unique about the game? - The heat scale from a gameplay point of view (as an added limitation to movement and ammunition) was a thematic masterstroke.

Why do you like it? - Other than at the extremes, the customisation aspect and the balance. The need to "make do" when you don't play with customisation. The thematic depth, with a backstory to the game being one of the deepest ever created (in terms of words written, etc). The possibility to play it as everything from a min-mix exercise to a roleplaying experience, and at variations in between. It's a game with breadth as well as depth, that can make me feel immersed in an experience that few other games do.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher? - there's a lot of book-keeping, and without an interest in the backstory you lose the immersive aspects. There's a lot of dice rolling. And it's "old and not cool" - as someone once told me, what your father drinks is not cool, while what your grandfather drinks might be. I'm hoping to get my own kids playing this before it becomes "not cool" on that scale, but I'd better hurry....!

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly? - I have no other 10's (at present!), but I have four 9's: Blood Bowl, Commands & Colors: Ancients, 6 Nimmt! and Forbidden Island. BB for similar reasons to BT; C&C:A because of the elegance and simplicity of the system; and the last two due to the mix of probability and luck for mid-sized groups and the family.

It's my only 10, so it's an easy choice, but its overall rating is fairly low, so it's appropriate, I think.

How many times have you played it?
118 logged plays. Probably pretty close to accurate.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
The way the different aspects of the game -- the purely mathematical, the deductive, the psychological, and the fickle whims of fortune -- all seamlessly intertwine.

Why do you like it?
Because however much you learn, there's still more. I've never cared for lifestyle games like Go or chess, because studying the same game for any length of time bored the snot out of me. To heck with this, let's play something else! But poker has so many facets, so many styles of play, so many possibilities ... I'm always learning something new, and I haven't begun to scratch the surface.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Lots of reasons, really. It's a traditional card game, without a designer's name to coo over. It's old. It's something your grandparents (and other non-geeks) played. And my favorite: it's "all luck." That's OK. I'm not offended. And I'll still play Dominant Species with you, any time you like.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
I don't. I have a few 9s: Arkham Horror (and Dunwich Horror) and Twilight Struggle, and DomSpec is a likely candidate. But this is the only game I'll say yes to without a second thought, and can't picture a time when that won't be the case.

Times I've played it:No idea. Dozens and dozens of times in the last ten years.

What's unique about it: The cannon, that captures other pieces by jumping over one other piece. The palace with its own small topology of General and "Guards" (they never leave these nine spots). The starting position, which makes it a jump right into the game without making ten moves to "prepare" gameflow. And the genaeral, who is not allowed to "look into the other General`s eyes" across the whole board. The river, making the Elephant a purely defensive piece.

Why I like it: I do not miss anything. I don`t see anything not to like. It is pure elegance, depth, accessibility, strategy, fun, surprise, interaction, you name it.

My guess on why it's not ranked higher: It is not from the western tradition. If this would be a Chinese website, this would be rank 3. And the Chinese characters make it hard to play it for beginners. It is easy to turn the pieces around, place stickers or paint some icons on them and go ahead.

My selfmade carved and painted "other sides".

Other games I rate this highly: None. It is my only 10. The rest are 9.6 (Antiquity) or lower - and these are changing. I never changed my 10 and as the BGG text for a "10" suggests, "I expect this will never change".

How many times have you played it? - In person, 20. Online - 200 to 300

What, if anything, is unique about the game? - The moving mechanism is like Quarto - your piece's 'endspace' determines your opponents next moved piece. Just when you get the hang of it, you can introduce longer matches, where the piece that wins the game for you has some extra powers and limitations - Its a unique game!

Why do you like it? After this many plays, it continues to reveal depth! Also, the 'Huch & Friends' version is beautiful. I guess one conceIt of abstracts is their appearance as well as gameplay.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher? Abstracts get the short end of the stick, I find. Many gamers want to feel, during a game, that they are a farmer, alien race, 15th century lord, etc. Without opening up the 'abstract and its relationship to themelessness' debate, Kamisado really does just offer the mental boxing match, extending if you want, into several rounds.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly? I think my only other 10 currently is Citadels. In this vein, I'd rate Hive extremely high (9.5 maybe?). Kamisado, though, needs more love!

I give Florenza a 9.5, but the only 10 I have is Go... so I'm rounding up.

Florenza is rank 844, but with an average rating of 7.65 it sure seems like this would be a top 100 (or at least a top 250) game if more people were aware of it and it was more readily available.

It's a pretty heavy Eurogame, with resources, buildings, workers, roles, etc.

Each player builds his own district with various production and/or economic buildings. Each round, workers are placed onto available buildings--including the buildings of other players. When someone uses your building, you receive a VP reward and they pay a VP cost.

There are also two rotating roles to compete for--the Captain and the Bishop. Each provides a turn order benefit as well as a way to reduce the available workers of another player (and, with the Bishop, to increase your workers as well).

The goal of the game is to hire renaissance artists, sculptors and architects to produce works in your district as well as in the main city square and cathedral. Different artworks provide different benefits as well.

I recommend this game all the time.

How many times have you played it?

Hundreds. I played in a draft league for several years.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?

I can't really say that it's particularly unique, since it wasn't the first tabletop replay baseball game, nor is it the most complex, but for me it offers a perfect blend of simulation, statistical accuracy, and most important, fun and replayability.

Why do you like it?

See above. Also, it's an ideal solitaire game.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?

It's the highest ranked baseball game in the Thematic category, so it's likely right where it belongs. If you're not a baseball fan, you're not ever going to pay attention to it. Game geeks tend to have more wide-ranging interests.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?

My other 10s are Chess, Go, Diplomacy, Poker, and Agricola. I haven't played the first three in years, I don't currently have a regular Poker game, but there's always farming. And baseball.

How many times have you played it?
At least 300 times growing up as a kid.
What, if anything, is unique about the game?
The weighted players that when flicked curl (nothing like the Z ball)
Why do you like it?
It is the ultimate football game!!!The beautiful game converted into a beautiful game.
What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Needs to be released in N. America with a World Cup and MLS version. Bring it back and advertise on TV. Would fly of the shelves.
What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Possibly Taluva, Crokinole, Looping Louie...

My only 3 perfect 10s are Crokinole, Dominion (which is more of a family rating) and Go. But that wouldn't make for a really interesting entry. Puzzle Strike is currently rated 9.5 which rounds to 10, and it's rated much lower.

I could easily see third edition (which I've preordered) going to the full 10, however, since it fixes pretty much all of my (very few) complaints with the second edition.

EDIT: oops, forgot the questionnaire.

How many times have you played it?
Sadly, I don't keep very good track of plays. I started before I began recording plays, and I've kind of lapsed on my recording plays since I began. I'd estimate somewhere around 150-200, including playing online.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Asymmetrical starting decks, crashing/counter-crashing mechanic and colored actions make for a fun twist on the Dominion formula deckbuilder.

Why do you like it?
What's not to like? It does its theme very well (if you've ever played Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo), and the asymmetrical matchups are fun.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Well, I fully understand why it's not everyone's cup of tea. It's more confrontational than Dominion. It's not as widely available as Dominion. Some people don't like the asymmetrical setup for fear of balance problems. The designer has a very profit-oriented approach to game design, which leads to him making some rather unfavorable statements and his game costing a bit more than other similar games (this is also the case with his other hit Yomi). But he's also passionate about perfecting his product... which is a good thing, but it has led to a rather short iteration cycle. This has ruffled a few feathers for people who want to stay up to date (I myself was not too impressed by the rapid release schedule, but after skipping the upgrade pack felt it worth my while to back the kickstarter for third edition, since it is one of my favorite games and well worth the money for the upgrades to the various chips to improve the already-pretty-damn-good balance).

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
As mentioned earlier, Dominion (family), Crokinole and Go are my other 10s.

Ranked 583 at the moment

How many times have you played it? Several times. I don't really count plays of any game

What, if anything, is unique about the game? Scoring system. I am not sure it is unique but I have not seen it elsewhere and I like it very much.

Why do you like it? Many things: Easy to learn and teach, mechanics that serve the theme, cool bits, very nice mapboard, and last but not least it is about Crete, where I live and it is the fact that it easily got my 10!

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher? It's clearly underrated. I don't know why...

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly? I have some other 10's in my collection (Caylus, Friedrich, Ninjato, Lord of the rings) each one rated 10 for a different reason, except that they are all great games I love to play.

Generally I think this little gem of the designer of "For Sale" should be higher ranked. It deserves it!

Been awhile since I have played this, but my comments remind me of why I like it. Don't have any idea about number of plays.

Great with three.
Classic RK. A game with just numbers that has incredibly nuanced effects for every decision.

By the time it came out, there was starting to be a small backlash against RK games. But is is still well rated.

C & C:Ancients
Blue Moon and Blue Moon City plus 3 more RK games

How many times have you played it?
100+

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Nothing

Why do you like it?
I love trick taking games in general. This game is simple enough and popular enough that you can play it with anyone, not just BGG addicts.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
A) It's a card game
B) It was created in 1930's

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
None, having only been immersed in the hobby for a couple years now, it's that never change bit that keeps several games from breaking into the 10's. That said Game of Thrones LCG and Tichu are on the cusp.

How many times have you played it? Many, times. My favourite racing style game
What, if anything, is unique about the game? The three-sided dice movement engine makes this game work.
Why do you like it? I have most of the best racing games, from Formula D to Turfmaster, Snow Tails, Mississippi Queen, most of the Horse racing games ...and I find myself drawn back to playing Powerboats. There is a bit of luck, but enough strategy to make a difference in who wins or loses. Plus its FUN!
What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher? Not sure, racing games as a group don't seem to be as highly rated as other styles of games. Maybe racers are as a group more critical gamers laugh, Plus this game doesn't seem to be as widely owned and followed as other racers. The theme is actually perfect for the racing engine, but my guess is racing boats aren't as exciting as Formula cars or Horses to many.
What other games, if any, do you rate this highly? I have my top 10, but this is my top rated racing game and as I say I own and have played most of the best of this genre.

How many times have you played it?

At least 20 that I recorded. Probably quite a bit more.

What, if anything, is unique about the game? Why do you like it?

Same answers to both questions. Its easy to teach, easy to play in a pub. Its got great minis. It is a total backstabby, screw your neighbor kind of game.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
I'd say its not super well known. Also, I don't think people realize how fun it is.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Heroscape, Warhammer Quest, Claustrophobia, Betrayal at House on the Hill. Huh, looking at all these I guess I like a game with an emergent theme. And minis.

How many times have you played it?
Well, I have 14 plays recorded on BGG, though 12 of them are recorded on the same day in 2008, so I think I was trying to approximate the plays I had before then. I don't generally record online plays, but I had at least 10 plays on gametableonline before they lost the license to Drakon. I also think that I've forgotten to record a few plays, though I definitely haven't played it very much lately - it's just not one that anyone I game with is particularly excited about playing. So let's say about 20 to 30 plays.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
There are other games with tile placement, there are other games set in a dungeon, there are other games where you try to escape from... something... I guess the main thing that sets it apart for me is the ability to create "flow." You can create closed loops, you can direct the flow of the dungeon away from places you want to protect, etc... You're putting down tiles, but the thing is that other people will generally get to use those tiles before you do, which is why I see it more as shaping the flow of the dungeon than laying out a path for yourself.

Why do you like it?
I love this game 2 player, because it's very strategic. Yeah, there's some luck in which tile you draw, and yeah there can be a little bit of a stalemate near the beginning if p2 mirrors p1's moves. And the character special abilities aren't particularly well-balanced (but they're only one-use per game, so it doesn't make too much difference). That doesn't matter for me. So many of my 2p games have been decided by a nasty loop that was hard or impossible to get out of, or by a clever setup that one player could use over and over while the other was locked out. One or two games ended with one player stranded alone with no adjacent tiles and no tiles in his hand. Sorry, them's the breaks.

I love this game with 3+ players, because it's chaotic, but not overly random. Any player can completely screw you over or unwittingly help you. But it's not as distasteful to me as a lot of multi-player conflict games, because it's not direct conflict. You didn't randomly stab my Barbarian in the back, you simply built a Mind Control Orb that I stupidly stumbled into, and then I was forced to go around in circles by the Strong Wind blowing through the corridors. Maybe next time I'll avoid leaving an open space in front of me if I think you might do something like that...

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
I think that some people don't like this game 2p because there's not "enough going on", while some people don't like it multi-player because it's "too chaotic". It's also probably not heavy enough for a lot of people that prefer medium-heavy euros, and not random/silly/thematic enough for people who like Ameritrash. For me, it fits in a nice little niche.

Also, the game is a little bit older and never had extremely wide distribution, as far as I know.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Vampire: The Eternal Struggle - I've played a lot of CCG's in my day, and V:TES is my favorite CCG, so even though I haven't played it in a couple years, I still have about 20 decks built and ready to go at a moment's notice
Eclipse - very new, and I do have at least one problem with the game that I think should be house-ruled. But regardless, it's a game I feel like I've been looking for for a long time.

50. Board Game: Carcassonne: Wheel of Fortune [Average Rating:7.09 Overall Rank:1081] [Average Rating:7.09 Unranked]
Steve Kennedy

I picked this up about half off from one of our FLGS last summer.

How many times have you played it? Several times, mostly in alternation with the base Carcassonne game.

What, if anything, is unique about the game? The starting board/grid includes a wheel that you can place meeples on to get special points during the course of the game.

Why do you like it? I think I like this "version" because of its attempt to bring in the Renaissance feel of the wheel of fate. It connects on a historical/cultural level for me more than just laying a bunch of tiles.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher? My guess is that there was a bit of fatigue for yet another Carc expansion. but the one thing that might also cause it to lose points is that the primary grid that you start with is harded to keep anchored which can cause other tiles to get moved around a bit.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly? Carcassonne was one of those games we played once without the River and then put away. But once we got directed toward adding the River, this game, and its expansions, really resonated with us. Other games rated a "10" currently in my collection list are:

Carcassonne (with River expansion)
Carc: Hunters and Gatherers
Carc: The Castle
Carc: The City
The Castles of Burgundy
Pandemic
Power Grid

Those last three games have sort of pushed Carc to the backburner along with many newer additions to our collection the past few months.

I feel like a poster child for how to enter the hobby now.meeple
