What is the lowest-ranked game here on Boardgamegeek that you rate a 10? If you have no 10s, what is the lowest-ranked game that you rate a 9?

I've seen this kind of list done before (e.g. What is your lowest ranked 10?), but it's been a little while now, and I'm very curious to see how the latest crop of games may affect a list like this. If you only have time to add a quick link to the game, that's fine, but I've included a little questionairre that you can fill out in your geeklist item if you wish:

How many times have you played it?
What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Why do you like it?
What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?

I'll start the list off with my entry (edit: which is no longer the first item on the list now that I've set it to sort by rank).

How many times have you played it?
A lot--38 logged, more before I discovered BGG. Many of those have been big convention games with up to nine players.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
A lot of race games offer roll and move mechanics. Speed Circuit, on the otherhand, never forces you to roll a single die. You plot speed then expend wear points if you push your car too far. Alternatively, you can opt to roll on the "chance table" vice spending that precious wear.

Why do you like it?
I enjoy racing games in general, but SC rewards good decisions and punishes bad ones. Most games are very competitive, often coming down to that last wear point in the final curve. The World Boardgaming Championship rules (http://www.lucidphoenix.com/sc/rules/rulesnew.asp?wbc=y) have kept the game fresh.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
The components were mediocre in the 70s; they just don't measure up to the game's overall quality. Adding custom tracks and diecast cars, using 1/4" steel nuts to represent wear points, and employing cards to plot speed are great touches that take the game to the next level.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
I have about a dozen "10" ratings on my list--four of those from the Combat Commander Series. The only other sports title is Strat-O-Matic Pro Football.

How many times have you played it?
Over 10 times. This was one of the first Euro games I bought online, prior to finding BGG and recording plays.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Great tile-laying game that simulates the feel of exploring the unknown.

Why do you like it?
It's great fun to circumnavigate large and small islands, trying to complete exploration, in a race to get scouts on the jungle paths to score secret victory points at the very end.

The exploration mechanics are simple and straight-forward, as it is a reworking of Entdecker. However, the addition of jungle paths and secret VPs incentivize players to complete small islands quickly, as they battle for control of each path, or one may go for the grand strategy of circumnavigating larger islands for greater points. There is a fine balancing act to be struck here--ignore the paths at your peril; however, not competing for the larger islands is also perilous. The tension this game provides, and the finesse required to do well is very satisfying.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
The main criticisms seem to be directed at the jungle paths or the die-rolling mechanism for income. The jungle paths make it feel like there are two separate meta-games going on. IMHO, there is a subtle, yet sophisticated interplay between the three elements of tiles, money, and jungle paths, that makes this game exciting, with an exploration theme that makes for memorable play. However, it can be easy to dismiss this game as too random.

This is mine (at time of writing sitting at #820).

How many times have you played it?
25

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
The games style is a mix of old hex and counter wargames (like Squad Leader) and colorful RPG-like adventuring.

Why do you like it?
Ultimately the amazing stories that the game tells, but the way everything flows in the game just works perfectly for me. There is a lot of strategy that goes into shaping and coercing the odds to your favor as well as a lot of trying to make the most of what you have.
The amount of characters and items in the game... wow, I've played 25 games so far and there are still a lot I haven't tried yet.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
I guess it falls between the genres that it mixes, and maybe a lot of people think they shouldn't mix? Maybe the idea of Spartacus rushing the Alamo on a BMX bike with a Claymore and an AK47 is simply too silly for some? I think it's pretty silly... He should trade the AK47 for Excalibur if given the chance

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Dungeon Twister and Earth Reborn.

How many times have you played it? I have only recorded 2 since I started recording my plays a year ago, but I know I have played it a couple dozen times.

What, if anything, is unique about the game? It is game about herding sheep. When I heard it was designed by a couple of Scots, my reaction was, "Of course it was. LOL"

Why do you like it? It is a rather slick, well-designed abstract strategy game with a fun theme. My children can play it and have just as much fun as adults with as much potential to win. What's not to like?

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher? It is a cute abstract strategy game. People who love abstract strategy might be turned off by the adorable sheep minis. People who love the cutesy factor might be turned off by the abstract strategy. Me, I love both. It's a win/win.

How many times have you played it? About a dozen
What, if anything, is unique about the game? Just the right mix of strategy and light dice-randomness.
Why do you like it? It gives the feel of football (specifically, playing as a coach and attempting to out-guess the opposing coach) without getting bogged down in statistics and micromanagement.
What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher? People see a football game and expect a game where the player controls every move, spin, and handoff, where individual player skills and statistics come into play. (Also, people see a sports game and are immediately turned off.) It's not a heavy, strategic brainburner. It's not by a big-name developer or a big-name game company so a lot of people probably haven't even heard of it.
What other games, if any, do you rate this highly? Agricola, Battlestar Galactica, Bridge, Eclipse, Eminent Domain, Ora et Labora, PitchCar, Small World, Village

Note that we play with a couple of variant rules:
1) When executing a pass play, a result of "Hail" on the Play die is treated as an X.
2) When playing with expansion teams, special teams plays (punts, field goals and kick returns) use the base dice instead of the team dice.

How many times have you played it?
28 times.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
It's a football game that focusses on a tournament rather than actually playing a match. Every single action you take will negatively affect someone else, so you very quickly learn to just roll with the punches and prioritise.

Why do you like it?
The theme, having to decide which of the numerous things you want to do you actually WILL do this turn, the screw-your-opponents possibilities and the party atmosphere when played with the right people.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
It's football, limited print run.....and it's football.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
My other 10s are Die Macher and Antiquity. This may need a shuffle though as I haven't played Die Macher in a long time (my tastes may have changed, for example I used to like Tikal and Attika more than I do now) and I'm really enjoying Dominant Species.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?

Its the most thematically deep game ever, I reckon. You can pretty much do anything in the movies. Mechanically, the use of cards for everything is pretty unique - San Juan comes closest.

Why do you like it?

See above

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?

How many times have you played it?
26 times. I'm always up for a game, but there aren't many I know who know how to play and teaching it is can be complex as everything is in German. Also, this is the only game my wife can't beat me at, so that may be a problem.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
I find the way the inventions work together quite neat. It also scales amazingly - it's for 2-4 players and I find it equally great no matter how many are playing. I'm also a fan of the "paying for played card with cards in hand" mechanic.

Why do you like it?
Once learned it's super fast but not super easy. Lots of decisions to make and you have to keep an eye on your opponents. It's a great way to get that "building a civilization" feeling without investing hours to do so. Also, the whole "paying for played card with cards in hand" mechanic.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
I would say it's limited availability and that it's only in German. Also, the learning curve is high, but once you figure out the symbols it's pretty easy to play.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Race for the Galaxy, Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm (I know it's an expansion, but it makes the biggest difference for the base game), A Few Acres of Snow, and Vikings

How many times have you played it?
I have 117 logged plays, and many more unlogged.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
This game is unique in that it represents all the unpublished prototypes that I have ever or will ever play.

Why do you like it?
Not many unpublished games that I've playtested would get a 10 rating from me, but the experience of developing games is what gets a 10.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Not everyone likes playing unpublished games, not everyone has the opportunity to do so even if they wanted to, and not everyone who does meet both the previous criteria realizes they can and should rate this database entry a 10.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
My other 10s: Dune, Loopin' Louie, El Grande, Ra, Stone Age

How many times have you played it?
At least 50 times (14 times since I have been tracking my games on BGG)

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
There are 3 routes going on during the game which do not belong to a particular player. You need to manipulate the routes to your advantage
Plus, the animal cards have unique facts on them about why they are endangered, population size, etc.

Why do you like it?
The tension of hoping a route will go or "not" go in a particular direction. And the "I can't act upset, though I am fuming inside", when the route you were planning on building on has move to far away from your next animal.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
People look at the box and think it is a children's game.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
My other 10's are Ticket to Ride, Backgammon, Catan 3D Collector's Edition, Euchre, Show Manager, Dark Tower, Crokinole, Call my Bluff, and Tichu

How many times have you played it?
Almost 20 times (17 recorded). I would love to play more but the game is very tense and sometimes aggressive - it's very hard to play when I am tired.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
It's a great combination of tile laying (with unique shaped tiles), majority with a twist and "troops" moving around. The score (food) is up to date at all times so it's easy to figure out the current state of the game.

Why do you like it?
I bought it because it was cheap ($10 on Amazon). I was impressed from the first play - the tension build up is incredible. It's a very visual game and there is a lot of planning involved.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
It's different, it's difficult and partly just randomness. Some games get a bit of publicity and then the avalanche keeps going for years. Out of necessity, most games are not well known (the 80-20 rule).

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
The usual suspects: Puerto Rico, Agricola, Le Havre.

Times I've played it: Six to ten (it's not an easy game to get people to play).

What's unique about it: It's the most "economic" game I've ever seen. 95%-100% of actions taken in the game affect resource prices, and you also have to contend with share prices, controlling interest in the shops, and demand for product.

Why I like it: Every game plays so very differently. You are forced to adapt to new situations every round, since every element of the game is interlocked. There's a good amount of player interaction in that roles are chosen secretly, and many actions are shared, so you have to guess what your opponents will do to maximize your turn. Action order is nutso bananas. The Gondolieri keeps everyone on their toes. You can screw over an opponent if you plan well. There are many paths to victory.

My guess on why it's not ranked higher: It's incredibly fiddly. Each resource has a board that tracks resource price, share price, and orders by moving pegs about holes, and almost every single action taken will move anywhere from one to nine pegs. I have no idea why this is a problem for some people, but it is. It's also pretty intimidating on a first play.

Other games I rate this highly: Agricola, Puerto Rico, and Big Boggle (yes, this game is ranked below Big Boggle).

How many times have you played it?
100+

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
A trick taking game with secret teams that change every hand. There is no end-game condition so you simply play until you feel like stopping--or until you get too drunk to read your cards

Why do you like it?
I've played over 100 times and I'm still learning new things! It's a great social game played with just a standard deck of cards (7 through ACE) and always leaves me wanted to play "just one more hand"

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
I've yet to find anyone who has heard of the game outside of Wisconsin and Germany, which is a shame because it really is an AWESOME game!

How many times have you played it?
Guessing... "eight".

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Well, it's basically the Battlestar Galactica game from FFG distilled into less than hour. You can easily play it in the 30-45 minute range with experienced players. It keeps all of the trash talk/betrayal (the best part) of the FFG game. It keeps the thematic elements there. The theme is more atmospheric, but it's there. And then you basically play Liar's Dice. Awesome!

Why do you like it?
I like it for all of the reasons that make it unique (see above). A quick anecdote: the majority of people I have played this with like it better than the FFG game, myself included. It keeps the hilarity without ever overstaying it's welcome.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Right now, it's a Print N' Play game. Not a lot of people know about it. I think some also don't like just how quickly a game can end. It can be disconcerting on a first play. But, once you know what to expect, the game is very exciting.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Eclipse, Tigris & Euphrates, Löwenherz, Urban Sprawl

How many times have you played it?

To many to count.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?

The rivalry it has started in my family. It has even started a saying we use anytime someone is being a sore loser. "STOP BEING CANASTY!"

Why do you like it?

I love the tension that builds when the pile gets high.

I love tricking people into thinking I don't have certain cards, I love calculating the odds of what cards have been played.

It's also the heaviest game my wife will play.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?

The tension and anxiety that builds when the pile gets big can really turn some people off, some people just don't like that kind of pressure. Especially that sinking feeling you get when the other team picks up a huge pile.
But these are also the same reasons people love it so much.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?

Cribbage and Empire Builder

How many times have you played it?
6 times, but over the last couple years and I feel I should have recorded more plays.
What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Its utterly ridiculous. Its maybe the only memory game I enjoy.
Why do you like it?
Well think about it, you just flip cards and if yours matches one of your opponents you have to make the noise of the farm animal that is his. The frustration at getting hammered all the time is fun, and actually the memory exercise of trying to remember each of the other players is quite fun. Its such a light game so there is nothing to be lost in being an utter loser...but its still fun to win.
What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Dude, you see the games that get ranked highly? There is no way a memory game where people make animal noises will ever get a decent rating around here. And even if there was a couple, this one really needs lots of players.
What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Well this is a recent addition to my 10's. I'm kind of liberal with 10's but here are some of my other low tens
Wok Star (1066, not enough distribution)
42 (2460, traditional, especially regional, games don't get much love around here)
Tien Len (3828, same as above, 42 is my favorite trick taking and this is my favorite climbing game)
Villa Paletti (812, though this may be usurped if I like Animal Upon Animal which I just ordered)
Scotland Yard (719, I have no idea why this is ranked so low this is an absolutely great game)

How many times have you played it?
At least 400 times. Maybe over 500.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Admittedly not that much is unique about the game. Various ideas in it have been used in other much more well known games such as Balderdash or Apples to Apples. Its ability to have as many players as you possibly want does set it apart from many other games but it is obviously not the only game to have that ability.

Why do you like it?
Funny, funny, funny, funny, funny, oh and funny. Nothing else in the world has made me laugh as much or as long as this game has. Every game has had memorable answers and moments of hilarity that i will never forget. I love Apples to Apples and Balderdash but in one your limited to the cards in your hand and the other your trying to guess the right answer. In each one your limited in some way when it comes to your answer. Sure, you could submit any answer in Balderdash but there goes any points you might have received that round. Although you may receive a well earned laugh from the group. With Things you can throw all limitations (for better or worse) out the window and just try and be funny. Whats better yet. Its fully ok and will not hinder your game in anyway.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
The already mentioned lack of uniqueness.

The fact that if you don't play with a group that has a sense of humor than there can be absolutely nothing funny about this game. I have met people who play this game very seriously. Theres nothing wrong with that. But at least in my experience it severely limits peoples enjoyment of the game.

Surprisingly undiscovered for a mass market game you can get at any Wal Mart or Target or (insert big box store). In all my years of playing this game I've probably played with 200 or more different people. Only 2 or 3 had ever heard of it.

The name. For some reason the name only sounds good after you've played it. I've had many people utter the words "Things? What the hell kind of a game is it going to be with a name like things?" It doesn't exactly scream box of awesome. Although, after you play it the name seems just right for some reason. Some of my friends have suggested that the game would draw your attention more if it was called Things The Game Of (Insert dirty word or obscenity). However I think that may cause it too be taken off of some store shelves.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
My other top tens are
Cash n Guns
Vegas Showdown
Blokus
Dominion Intrigue
Power Grid
Tales Of The Arabian Nights

Napoleon at Waterloo is a great, short, well-balanced wargame with rules that are easy to learn and play that is challenging for both sides.

I have played it 27 times, starting with my first play on December 10, 1975 (for some reason, I recorded all my plays on a sheet of paper included in the game, even though in general I only started recording plays in January, 2002.)

I think it's not ranked higher because non-wargamers don't like wargames and wargamers want more complex (and, admittedly, more realistic) games.

Oddly enough, there are just two wargames that I rate '10': Napoleon at Waterloo and Paths of Glory. One is a very complex game and the other is very simple. Paths of Glory, however, is currently rated #22 on BGG while Napoleon at Waterloo is rated #2063.

How many times have you played it?
28 times as of this post.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?

Instead of using tetrominoes to build things, you use smaller pieces to build tetrominoes.

Why do you like it?

I'm a huge fan of puzzle games, and this one is great. It makes me think in a unique way, and rarely has obvious choices. While you are doing the same thing each time you play, somehow the variety of goal cards and the randomness of piece selection make each game feel unique to me.

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Several reasons. Puzzle games are never going to be everyone's cup of tea. Some people just aren't built to like games of this style. Also it is 100% multi-player solitaire, so people looking for interaction will not like it. Some people might have burned out on FITS, leaving them with little interest in this similar game. And, finally, it's fairly new to the US market and I think it flew under the radar because it wasn't hyped very much prior to its release.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?

Colosseum
All things Dominion
FITS
Lord of the Rings
Pandemic
Shadows over Camelot
Space Alert
Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit

I think this is perhaps my only 10 and it happens to be low-ranked--mostly due to people indulging in the misguided privilege of feeling insulted by it. This is a great game, though. I'm not unusual in my love of this game. It is the best deck-building game I have played. I play this game as much or more than classic greats like Race for the Galaxy. The theme and artwork is just icing on the cake. Finally, this is one thing you and your nazi cousin can both agree on at Thanksgiving.

How many times have you played it?
Over 200 times.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
It is an augmented reality card game for positional control on a 3x3 board. A card would be read by an overhead camera and the summon to the digital board had a unique animation for attack, death etc. It is a concept that some have teased with (i.e. Yu-Gi-Oh) but never realized.

Why do you like it?
There was plenty of room for strategic depth with the standard board orientation. Since attacks, blind spots and counter-attacks follow a set pattern, positioning your monster in the correct orientation on the board was paramount. The arrangement of elemental tiles on the board adds an additional layer of depth. Several deck archetypes dominated the scene at the end of each expansion cycle. However, this did not diminish the fun of trying to beat these decks with an unconventional play mechanic (e.g. plants, invisibility).

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Unfortunately, the game had a high cost of entry ($70) with the purchase of the game, starter deck and PS eye. Moreover, it was exclusive to the PS3 and appealed to a small, niche audience therein. Like most other collectible card games, there was the potential to spend copious amounts of money. A select few cards needed re-balancing but were by no means unbeatable.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Summoner Wars, Dominion

mb
Yes, the good old-fashioned Ork crash-fest by GW!

How many times have you played it?
Probably 50+ times, but most of those games went down way before I joined BGG.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
It's a tabletop game that features only Orks. Well, and Grots (at least until you take in the expansion.)

Why do you like it?
The silly fun it is to play this.
You can plan ahead, but your plans will be shot all to pieces within a turn or two by the sheer amount of crazy, uncontrollable stuff that'll be going on.
Ramming your trukk headlong into a rock? Check!
Going out of ammo for your Big Gun on the first shot? Check!
Have your newly modified gun blow up in your face? Check!
Use grenades as melee weapons and blow everyone up? Check!

They are Orks! You can't control them! You can just point them in a direction and enjoy the fireworks!

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Not to many pure Orks out there.
Plus, it's one of GW's discontinued games and doesn't really receive any official backing. There are a few great fan-made additions out there though...

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
Pure 10s: Arkham Horror, The Twelve Doctors: Doctor Who Card Game

How many times have you played it?
29+
I record my plays as the number of times it hits the table - multiple plays on the same day being recorded as one play. I've played on 29 different days - probably about 50 times total.

What, if anything, is unique about the game?
Character's position on the board (number and color of the space he's on) is a huge factor in the character's powers.

Why do you like it?
I wrote a review on exactly that question:
http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/823834/why-i-rate-capes-cowl...

What's your guess on why it's not ranked higher?
Primarily rarity - not enough ratings. But also low-quality bits.

What other games, if any, do you rate this highly?
My other true 10s: Bootleggers, Star Wars Miniatures, Race for the Galaxy
