This was my tenth year to play True Dungeon. I have played in every adventure including the gone but not forgotten True Heroes events. My character of choice is the Bard and I prefer the puzzle versions of the event.
There were two separate adventures this year The Giant's Travail and Draco-Lich Undone (which had a puzzle & a combat version). I played Draco-Lich first and our group did not fair well. We only solved one of the puzzles and lost a party member in the first combat room. The puzzles seemed harder than usual this year or maybe I was just not warmed up as I played at 9:30 Thursday morning.
The group I played with on Saturday for Giant's Travail performed much better. We solved all but one puzzle and thought our way through the final encounter to avoid an unnecessary battle. Our group was marred by one player that appointed himself our leader & insisted that everyone follow his directions. shake Fortunately, myself and a couple of other experienced player were able to shepherd the five rookies in our group through the event in such a way they could contribute and have fun.

My first demo of the show was Lemonade Stand. I found the game a bit too mathy for my taste. It seemed like a pretty good economic game with a simple theme that is easy to relate to.

The deck of cards on a set of dice! I had heard of this last year but had not had a chance to play. The concept is pretty cool and the dice a nice and chunky with embossed faces rather than printed. This looks to be a quality product with some interesting uses to explore.

I heard a lot of talk about this game last year but it had somehow slipped past me. After being hit by a bouncing chicken as I walked down the aisle near the booth, I stopped by to look it over.
This game is just plain fun! A silly idea that has been executed perfectly.

Also in the Haywire booth I discovered Chupacabra. Not the actual creature, but a light dice game about attacking the livestock of the other players. The dice glow in the dark and are well made. The game has a nice catch up mechanism that does offer hope to a player ravened by the others. This is a fun filler that played quick.

After backing this game through Kickstarter, I was happy to seen a physical copy at the show. The new version of Tsuro adds sea monsters that start at random locations on the board. They move according to the roll of a die and inject an element of danger to all the players. While this does not replace the original game, it does offer an enjoyable variation for those looking for a bit more chaos.

What's complicated about dropping cards? Nothing! Trying to get the little devils to land where you wanted? Very challenging!

As a fan of deck builders and comics, I was both excited and nervous about this title. Let's face it, not every comics related game has been a winner. This one is a stellar achievement! The game uses a single currency to acquire cards and really embraces the theme. The art is taken from the comics. Each player has a separate hero with a unique bonus that influences the way each deck is built. For example, I played Green Lantern and my bonus was triggered by having a variety of card types in my hand. The Batman player wants as much equipment is his deck. I can hardly wait for the release of this game.

One of the few items I went to the show with the intention of buying. I love AToE and the new board adds new areas to explore, new town elders to investigate, and new villains to hunt. The new heroes look interesting as well. Flying Frog did their usual outstanding job with the production of the expansion. As always, many of the cast members of the game were on hand to explain the products and sign autographs.

I started of Friday by finally trying out one of Fantasy Flight's Living Card Games. I have recently joined the cult of Song of Fire & Ice fans and have heard how well this LCG captures the feel of the novels. After giving it a drive around the block I was very impressed. The theme is executed extremely well and the feel of the novels is certainly there. The four hoses in the base set appear very well balanced; however, the each have a distinct feel. I will certainly be looking into adding this one to my collection.

In a search for some of the smaller companies showing off their efforts, I discovered Two Lanterns Games tucked in a back corner of the Exhibit Hall. While the gaming public has not exactly been crying out for a card game about hunting mushrooms; they have been presented with just such a thing. I got a chance to play the game with the designer, Brent Povis, and found him to be a super nice guy with a very enjoyable game. Morels offers a side scrolling walk through the woods with some interesting strategic choices along the way. The set I purchased includes little plastic skillets & wooden collecting sticks in place of the cardboard tokens. I learned that Brent & his wife whittled the sticks by hand.surprise

I had scheduled a playtest session with Brian Mayer through BGG for his new co-op game about smuggling slaves to Canada, Freedom: The Underground Railroad to be published by Academy Games. The game is a revised version of his original Print & Play title, Conductor. Brian is working to make those final tweaks to produce the right level of tension for the players. In our session, the game came down to the very last turn of the very last player. A real nail biting victory. I have a very favorable impression and look forward to getting my hands of a copy early next year.

As to the game itself, I give it thumbsup thumbsup
The new rules change up the starting hands and replace the Estates with new single cards that have an actual use. The theme of the set seems to be all about trashing and replacing cards. I want to give several more plays before issuing a final judgement; but for now, I have a very favorable opinion.

Another new title from Gut Bustin' Games is Fleamarketeers. The game involves buying & selling various items at a flea-market. Each player has a concealed list of the values of the various items. No two lists are alike so the item you unload just to clear your table may be the most valuable item in the purchasers book. A cool auction game with an interesting twist. The game is in final playtest now and should be out early next year.

The kind folk at Rather Dashing Games were showing off three titles and I selected Four Taverns. The idea of competing taverns to field the most successful adventurers sounded like fun. Unfortunately, my experience was less than enjoyable. At least in our game there seems to be a real runaway winner problem. I was not able to complete a single quest and had no way to prevent anyone else from doing so. The player that completed the first quest was now able to play more cards than everyone else and had a larger hand size. This may have simple been bad luck in my card draw; however, it did rather sour me on the game.
