We all know the classic two player games: Lost Cities, Battle Line, Memoir 44 (and siblings), Mystery Rummy Jack the Ripper, etc. I do a lot of two-player gaming and I acquire a lot of random games. So, without further ado, here's a few 2-player games that aren't quite as well known (although not all obsure) that you should really try out. Few of these games are any sort of greatness, but they all have merit and are worthy titles. Feel free to add your own.

1. Board Game: Crazy Chicken [Average Rating:6.58 Overall Rank:1079]

Drive / Crazy Chicken is a fast two player card game. It very much has a rummy element to it, but there are multiple draw decks and multiple discard piles. The central mechanic is that melds can be stolen by making a bigger meld. On your turn you draw two and then meld or discard one ... so melds also prevent discarding. The more cards of a given type in the deck, the more points its worth and the harder it is to secure. Brilliance by Michael Schacht.

This is an excellent two-player game. My initial reaction was ho-hum, as it didn't seem very substantial. I had a similar reacion to Lost Cities. After repeated plays I can honestly say there's a lot of very interesting manuevering in this game. It certainly stands its ground against games like Lost Cities and Mystery Rummy.

This game gets better and better the more you play it against one person, as your strategies adapt. This is, in my opinion, the best couples game I've ever played. It's unfortunate that Crazy Chicken was only available in German and Drive is hard to get due to silly SimplyFun distribution methods. With better exposure I think this game would be right up there with the top light two-player card games.

For a relatively new kid on the block (around here anyway) Hey That's My Fish is getting fairly solid exposure. And for good reason. This is a game that can be learned in 5 minutes, plays in 10 and is both strategic and fun. The central mechanic is a simple tactical moving element. The catch is that as you move around the tiled board it slowly disappears, causing the play area to fragment. The goal is to capture the best tiles as this happens. With tiles disappearing there's lots of room for cornering off penguins and tiles. Very interesting. As a two-player game, this can range from extremely light to very tactical depending on how you want to play it. Either way it's quite fun. For these reasons I really recommend checking it out.

Tally Ho is quite the anomoly. It's a mixture of totally random tile flipping discovery and calculated chess-like tactical manuevering. It's a game that can have luck-based blowouts. Even so, the discovery element is fun. And even when one play is getting creamed by bad flips the maneuvering is always interesting. This game has massive flaws, but it is always fun and interesting nonetheless. Definitely worth checking out. It's even on BSW.

I like how it starts off totally random and then turns more and more into a pure abstract strategy game. Agreed that the luck factor can be overwhelming, so play it in the spirit of fun, not serious competetion.

Also it seemed to have a subtle problem in the wording of the rules concerning repeating moves or board positions (the attempt to avoid an infinite loop in play). It's been a while so I forget the details, but it seems like we found that playing with the rules as literally written did not avoid an infinite loop (a ko fight, for the go-players out there :) so we played with "super-ko" rules (that you simply cannot repeat any previously played board position, which evidently avoids repetition but could theoretically be a pain to remember in certain complex situations.

Australia is an area majority sort of game, except your placements go on area corners. Two player area-majority games almost never work because they are so one-for-one. The incidental effects of placing on corners adds the needed dynamic quality to make this work with 2 players. In fact, I think this game is best with two. My fiance loves this game. This is the closest to an area majority game I've found that actually works with two. So if that's your cup of tea give it a shot.

The big problem i have with this game is that after one or two plays we realized that it's really going to come down to a war of attrition. As in the end of the game the player who can't go ends up losing...which is unfortunately very anti-climatic.

After 3 or 4 plays you'll have new realizations that supersede you prior one.

Seriously. It's the multiple options for victory that really keep things interesting. Games where someone is outright killed are not uncommon. And that tends to be the early goal. But there comes a point where you have to consider:
a) your hostage getting Pegasus'd from your hand (a big risk if you hold it late in the game with few cards in hand)
b) your hostage getting killed on the board if you play him to get him out of your hand.
c) running out of available moves.
C is actually very interesting. It certainly doesn't always come down to that, but even when it does, it can be very interesting. You have to weigh the risk of aggressively trying to kill all their rows and/or the hostage, vs maintaining options to play. This is also why the Hera/Zeus cards are double edge swords. Often I will NOT attack the opposnent's H/Z if played early, and just play defensively and make THEM kill it with their OWN Pegasus. So many strategies and options. I just love this game. I think if everyone who rated this game played it ten times before rating it (to the point where reference cards are unneeded, and they had played multiple games resulting in each of the victory conditions), its ratings would be much higher. I agree that if you're only going to play it a couple times, it's not worth it. It rewards repeated play.

I also like playing it with 6, but it seems like a good chunk of my friends dislike the inherent chaos associated with that. I rather enjoy the chaos, though, and seeing who can mitigate it the best for the win.

For a game that plays so quickly, the chaotic nature with more players doesn't strike me as being an awful thing. I could see where if you were playing with folks prone to AP, it could be incredibly unpleasant.

If you're looking for a short two-player game with a direct conflict edge to it then look no further. This game really has some interesting ideas, and it's the sort of thing rarely seen in a card game.
These games were really surprising gems for me. Not really a wargame, in the classic definition, but they give you a fast game with a good feel for what was going on in each scenario. The rules are good, but they are not well or completely written in the rules sheet included with the game. Check FAQs on BGG to get a good start.

Dice, though? Hmm...not sold on that one. That's half the strategy tossed out the window. You should be punished for burning through your combat deck, and the stronger characters should have a big advantage over the weaker. Adding dice to the mix just messes that up, I'd think, and not in a good way.

First of all, ignore the theme if you don't like fantasy, it has little to do with the game (surprise, right?). I'll warn you that the first 2-3 times you play this it will feel like war that you can choose your card. But all of a sudden something clicks. Strategies start to form, at first short range, then all of a sudden long range. As you get to know the decks in this it becomes a very intense give and take game. Suddenly find it played out, but still want to play? Get an expansion pack for a couple of bucks and even an old deck (or race) will need to come up with new strategies to go against a different deck. But unlike Carcassone and Inns&Cathedrals, this one is fantastic out of the box (no expansion necessary).

In other words, I really like this one. NOTE: If you're a MtG fan, from what I understand, you may be frustrated as this looks and smells like Magic, but is not Magic.

Definitely not for everyone (especially Magic players, I gather). And it is most definitely about the predictablity of known decks, it's part of the strategy to know that a player will raise you to a certain level on Earth, you can switch it with a mutant and then clean up on Fire (for instance). It really isn't until you know the decks that you are playing with and against that this game starts to really shine.

Again, it looks and smells like Magic, but plays much differently from Magic. If you're a Magic player, I'd recommend staying away as you are going to be disappointed that it isn't Magic.

Kurt has it right in that it is the knowing of the decks that makes the strategy. In Magic the deck creation is where it all happens which in turn encourages the buying of those funky new cards (again and again) to develop fiendish combinations. BM removes the deck creation part (although you can tinker) and focusses on the interaction between the different prebuilt decks. This makes it more like a board game in that optimal moves can be refined through repeated plays. This doesn't happen in Magic as the decks are constantly varied (and the prebuilt decks just aren't that interesting IMO).

I still like both games and multiplayer Magic has a great social diplomacy aspect; an option BM does not offer.
