Back from GenCon, and then went directly to Canada, I was not able to pass go. I did not collect 200 dollars. I did however make it back for our monthly game day Saturday. It was an awesome time. I got to play some great games with great friends, and also with my wonderful wife to celebrate her birthday.

A Game of Thrones was played, and I lost horribly. The Starks are not known for their victories, and apparently, the Baratheons are, so that's about what happened.

Also played Jaipur, Morels, Lemonade Stand, Dominion, Bisikle, and Sorry Sliders.

Lemonade Stand surprised me in how much I liked it.

Dominion was the most drawn out horror of a game imaginable. Awesome, and I only came in 3rd place out of 4. Another round, and I was in 2nd, maybe. I suppose I should have bought more duchies.

I don't like Tournament or the prizes.

Jaipur and Morels were just okay. Bisikle and Sorry Sliders featured my kids, so were awesome.

Saturday evening- Played Thurn and Taxis. Lost to my wife by 1 point. (29-28)

Sunday- We got an unexpected visit at my church by 3 of my closest gaming buddies, who promptly after church invited us over to their house to play a game. We played 1 five player game of Acquire after lunch. I came in 3rd.

Then when we got home my daughter tells me she wants to play Finca. I lost to her by one point (69-68).

I really should get the mb microbadge.

Drove from NY to MD to visit my brother in law and his wife this weekend. In between trips to Chesapeake Bay and The Search For Crab Cakes we got a good amount of gaming in.

Thursday
King of Tokyo x2 - The kids loved playing with their uncle and I...even if we beat them both times

Friday
Bohnanza - which has become my sister-in-law's favorite game
King of Tokyo x2 - another pair of victories for the adults
Chateau Roquefort (I sat out to let Mom, Aunt, and Uncle play with my 7yo)
7 Wonders

Saturday
Bohnanza
Alhambra w/ Magical Buildings
7 Wonders
Crokinole

Sunday
Bohnanza
7 Wonders w/ Catan Island

I also made good use of my Realm Coins by using them with 7 Wonders and a couple games of King of Tokyo.

Grand Cru:
Finally got it to the table! There is definitely a decent game in there but there are some aspects of it that I am not a fan of (the market, how slow it starts, etc.) so I will be interested to try it with a variant to see if it fixes some of the issues I don't care for.

23:
Nice little card game. Glad I got to play this finally.

Africana:
From the person that brought us Valdora; I like this game so much better than Valdora and I am not sure why. I think I like the addition of the adventures and trying to be completing those while doing some set collection while trying to just stay ahead of everyone else.

Giza: The Great Pyramid:
This is my 3rd play of this game. I had it taught to be at BGG con 2011, and the person that taught it to us (it was a Mayfair rep) clearly had played it way too much so during the teaching process he was just rattling off various rules in no real order and then kind of stomped us in the game. Now that I have played it two more more times, I kind of enjoy it and it is a decent little worker placement game.

Farmageddon:
Just got this from Kickstarter. Good game overall. Competing for various fields to bring in crops while messing with everyone else with action cards made for a decent game. Definitely one I will bring out again because the length of the game was just right (long enough to let you have a chance if you are getting stomped right out of the gate but short enough that it doesn't wear out its welcome).

Marrakech:
Always love to bring this out as a nice light game. Simple rules, easy game play but enough of a game there to keep the interest. To top it all off, it has cool little carpets. Who doesn't like cool little carpets?

Can't Stop:
My 4 year old (almost 5) wanted to play this and it was the perfect game. Moved fast enough to keep his attention and it was something he would really wrap his head around and enjoy. I think I may have a gamer coming up!

Farkle:
Okay, let me explain. This was not my choice but my SIL doesn't do well with games that require too much thought nor too much downtime. For her, Ticket to Ride is too hard and too long. So she wanted to bring something to the table and this was something she understood and played a lot of people so we all played along and humored her with it. It isn't horrid but I definitely won't play it again unless I have to and I might even trade in a limb to not play it again.

Vegas:
Played several games of this. My MIL really liked this game and we played it several times in a row. This game has kind of been our warm-up game during game night. At game night, we did manage to have someone have AP over this game (and he only had 3 die at the time)...but that is another story for another time.

Last week, my wife & I played five games of commands & colours, more or less evenly divided (I think I won 3).

We also played 2 games of Legend of the Five Rings:
First my wife's Naga versus my Toturi dishonour (a victory for her - the first victory of the Naga in AGES, mostly thanks to 3x Purusha).
Secondly my wife's Scorpion dishonour versus my Crab. Very quickly (I think thanks to Goshiu reflecting a Dark Lord's Favour or Kolat Assassin's honour loss) I got below 0 honour and that was the beginning of the end.

EDIT: In fact, it was my own Kolat Courtiers coming up at an bad moment, especially when followed by her Shinjo's Judgement.

Next to that, Juleske, Conlaen and I played The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. We finished the Long Dark very quickly (easily going through the locate tests for once) and then begun the Foundations of stone. First time through - very, very hard and then we all died. Second time, as far as I am concerned, the best time we've had in the entire game. What a cool, cool quest!

Furthermore, I played a little bit of solitaire Squad Leader and build some more decks for SWCCG.

HYPERBOLE! It's like the greatest thing ever!!!
mbmbmbmbmb
A good weekend with a good time (mostly) had by all.

Friday:
We began the evening with a quick play of Egizia. I concentrated on the Pyramid and getting Sphinx cards, with everything going right for me. I beat the other players by 15, 18 and 22 points, respectively.

I was eager to see how well The Castles of Burgundy would work with more than 2 and wanted to note how hard the game would be to teach. It works well with 4, but can drag if one or more are prone to AP -- there are too many choices and at one point I stared at a foe hoping to see his head explode (a la the film "Scanners"). It turned into 3+ hours due to his indecision. However, the teaching went well and I enjoyed the play, even if my GF, Ruth, trounced us with her giant flock of Sheep. [Verdict still holds: whoever gets into Sheep, wins.]

Saturday:
The non-AP prone player from the night before was eager to play The Castles of Burgundy again, especially as the former wasn't there. I enjoyed the 3 player much better than the 4, though that could be because of the less indecisive nature of our game. My GF still won, though her margin over me was by 2 points and over our other friend by just 5. Yes, she did it with Sheep once again.

We enjoy Run for your Life, Candyman!. It is the vilest, most evil, most fun package of gaming goodness for when you're in an aggressive mood. So we, especially Ruth, wanted to break out our new copy of Shootin' Ladders: Frag Fest. It's just as vile as the original, but a whole lot more fun. There so much more you can do and really does turn my childhood memories of "Chutes & Ladders" upside down. I was the last cookie standing, even if all I had left was my left toe! I'd play this again in a heartbeat.

Michael Schacht's games are very hit & miss with me. Some, like "Coloretto" and "Hansa", I adore. Others, like "China" and Industria, I tolerate at best. But a friend of ours really likes the last one and he insists on playing it every chance he gets, though it is unlike any other games he usually enjoys. (My theory is he likes it 'cause he bougt it; cognitive dissonace.) It's a meh experience for me, as I don't find enough game there to keep me interested. In any case, it took 4 hours to play, and I wound up in 2nd place because of a stupid mistake that caused a 6 point swing in the final totals.

Sunday:
We finished up the weekend with a rousing game of Macao. Just like with "Egizia", everything went right for me. I got out Miss Grey & Miss Green, had the Prospector and his associated Offices, gain coins whenever I took over a city section, had to spend 1 less cube for taking over said sections, gained a bonus point for each good delivered, could by 2 VP for 1 coin, and whenever I selected dice I gained an extra cube per. Oh, and I had a huge area of connected city sections. It was relatively close at the end, though I was the only one with a clear tableau -- I won by 16 points.

This was a good weekend. I won a lot more games than my usual average and I cannot wait for the next one, when people come visit us for our big, semi-annual gaming weekend.

Although, this weekend I ordered Virgin Queen from Amazon, so I've got that to look forward to next weekend. That's definitely NOT a game with which you'd unwind after a stressful day!

It has been a few weeks since I got in any weekend gaming, other than through the iPad, which I still have not convinced myself to log as plays.

Aquädukt: Picked this up in an auction recently and finally got it played this weekend. After reading through the rules I was iffy on it, and not sure of the roll of the die, but after two plays I thought it left enough decisions, to be an okay we have a half hour what to do, game.

Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization, made it back to the table after a curious sabatical. Recorded the 115th and 116th plays. The last time we played was over two months ago. The first play of the day was probably my best game ever played, I had built a very balanced civilzation, my buddy even remarked early in the 1st age that it was as good as he's seen either of us build. He upgraded Government early, had code of laws, the library, so he decided to try and starve me. I had foolishly let the age 1 mine and farm slide by, then he just started grabbing up all the good cards I may need to advance my civilization, age 2 and 3 mines and farms both, any resource action cards, he seemed to have all the "potential", meanwhile I was slugging along, buiding/upgrading the pieces and parts I had, breaking lab guys to make them library's etc, cause I never had the food to build new people, my game was all about optimizing what I already had. I can't exactly say what happened, but the only thing I can come up with is he spent too many actions trying to guide my game and and not enough to guide his own, ultimatley he collapsed. It was a skunking, he only rounded two corners. The second game he tried to emulate my well rounded civ, and he did as he won by 12 points, but to do it he had stockpiled defense cards, and my aggressions were not successful. He said he was not sure we was going to win it, it was that close. It was nice to break this one back out.

Went to friends where we played Lords of Vegas. This was a new game for my wife and I. Was a lot of fun, will want to play this one again. Also played a game of Survive: Escape from Atlantis!

Saturday

Went to our BOGA game day and introduced a friend to Transylvania: the card game. Then we sat down with a couple of women that were new to the group and played a game of Flash Point: Fire Rescue. Then we played Ticket to Ride Map Collection: Volume 1 – Team Asia & Legendary Asia. We played team asia was a lot of fun. Then a game of Revolution! with the Revolution! The Palace expansion.

Sunday we did not play anything as we worked around the house.

Was a good weekend of games.

The first CABS meeting after GenCon is always loaded with new games for everyone to try out. This was no exception with many, many new games hitting the tables. The only one I played was Seasons.

From the hype and the reviews, this looked like a game I would not enjoy, but I really wanted to give it a try just to see what the hype is about. For me, it's about a bunch of nothing.

You'll spend the first portion of the game drafting cards, which is really where all the game is. Next, you'll spend a couple of hours (half an hour per person) playing out the game who's winner is mostly determined during that first drafting part.

Is it really that bad? Not really, I think I've rated it a 4. But I'm glad I got to try it and just as glad I don't have to try it again.

Much more enjoyable were games that I've been playing steadily and have faded, or begun to fade, from the "hotness" and cult of the new.

My upgraded plastic firefighters and expansion board Flash Point: Fire Rescue – Urban Structures came in from my Kickstarter order. Two new players had me play on the ranch house board, but on veteran level for a challenge. A close game, but one that we lost.

I also got to play a 4 player game of Agricola using both Agricola: Farmers of the Moor and the Agricola: World Championship Deck – 2011 expansions. Such a lovely game, and so much better than what hits the market currently.

I also got in a five player game of Belfort using the Belfort: Guild Promo Pack #1 for the first time. I love Belfort, but it does have a learning curve for new players. It's really tough for players to get that the worker placment stuff is secondary to the area control and majority scoring. This game was a bit of a runaway win for me, so not much tension.

Sunday was a learning game of Commands & Colors: Ancients for me. Next weekend, I hope to try out some other new games of interest that I saw played this weekend. Smash Up, Legacy: Gears of Time, Libertalia, Ragami, and more.

Since then, my wife and I have played 3 2 player games and all of them have been close. My scores have steadily improved from well under 100 points in the initial 4 player game, to 111, then 117 and finally 155 in my last 2 player games. My wife's scores have kept up with me and we have been trading wins so far.

I think Trajan is a great game and a triumph for Feld in design, but I do not think it will unseat Macao as my favorite Feld game.

Moving on, we also played:

1 x Puerto Rico 3 player - ran away with it
1 x First and Goal (actually not a complete game, was just showing a fellow gamer and football fan why I gave up on this one)
1 x Castles of Burgundy (4 player - top 3 spots were 4 points apart)

early friday i got a call from my brother who wanted to play some games. which i was very excited about because in 2010 he told me he could no longer play games with me. he was my #1 game partner and it was sad, but this year he has played a total of 3 games with me which is better then 0.
friday:

we played Tannhäuser which was one of our favorite games to play with each other when it first came out, so i had to explain the revised rules to him. i played the german's with Tannhäuser: Yula
taking out carl. my bro played the union keeping it the same. we decided on playing capture the flag. the game was fun and we enjoyed playing it once again. my brother was not rolling too good so he was having some difficulties, but my rolling was good and my defense rolls were hot as i rolled a lot of natural 10's good for him it wasn't that good on the attacks... in the end i pulled a fake and got his attention of his flags and then blocked him causing him to have to just knock my characters off that or bull rush. the germans won with a few wounds. the union wasn't doing so good as i knocked off berry and a troop.

saturday:

i dragged out an oldie in attempt to get my kid to still play some games. she LOVED it, we just played 3 different games mostly finger flicking games, no idea what there names are.

my wife wanted to play a couple of games first on her list was pret which i was more then happy to play as i like this game. A LOT. i tried a different approach this time to the game as my wife has been stomping me in the ground of late on this game. my idea was to just try some different people and some contracts and this time she was stomped, i think it was just not going her way on the designs other wise it would of been me.

last week i started a campaign, i asked my wife if she was wanting to start one and she was willing. she picked albright as a spirit speaker and syndrael as a knight. we only got through first blood as it was late. the over lord played a lot of cards the ettin was taking a lot of damage he moved back and saved a turn then gaining one more turn as syndrael missed on the attack, albright took a lot of damage as he got knocked down a lot. the over lord was 1 square away from victory as the ettin fell to the ground. the over lord learned his lesson, i has played a move card too early in the game where it wasn't really needed. there were no good items in the store this turn but albright found scorpion helm. they both spent there experience and ready themselves for there next travel...

sunday

my wife and i played one game with india being our 2nd time we like this map my wife thinks it is really beautiful. i won with a lot of tickets.

later the group came over to yet battle out another round of Descent: Journeys in the Dark (Second Edition) leoric of the book and auric albright with there heads up, very high spirits traveled to castle daerion. many jokes about the pathetic over lord went around the table there travel to the castle was quick and with no delay making good time as they opened the doors they found two flesh moulders they took out one villager fast leoric lit a beacon to only be knocked down. two barghest took out another villager then leoric found a scorpion helm, the heroes battle it out with the moulders as the villagers tried to get away from damage, albright broke away in hopes to light another beacon as leoric gets knocked out and the barghest cut the heroes off from each other. leoric uses his feat and takes out the moulders and a barghest, but too late because the other barghest takes out the third villager. the heroes could not get a hold of themselves as leoric gets knocked out again and the last villager is taken out.
encounter 2. the heroes are low in spirit and wounded bad. sir palamon is surrounded by zombies as the heroes walk in they find themselves up against there nightmares once again the flesh moulders are coming after them. sir palamon was able to get a miltiaman in to help out the heroes as they got beat down by the moulders sir palamon took 6 damage from the zombies but the ettin joined in and gave him 5 more. the heroes try to help out sir palamon and take out some zombies and the militiaman try to keep the moulders back. then sir palamon falls with our heroes surrounded by zombies and there hopes turned to doom.
back at the shop they buy nothing as they didn't get enough gold but leoric get some experience undead might, the over lord spends 2 of his points. the heroes talk out there next travel but the mood is gloom and the air thick they choose to go to the cardinal's plight, but not today as they must gather there strength as they see it they can not afford another lose...
ending my gaming for the weekend.

We started out with a new game:
Farmageddon
A light filler game, kind of quirky. Not for people who like to form long term strategy, this is one of those everyone-gets-messed-with games. As long as you approach it the right way, fun for a quick game.

Next, one of our guys had to run a quick errand, so we moved to:
King of Tokyo
A die rolling fest, one player had a great combo of power ups and held Tokyo for several turns to win.

Lords of Waterdeep followed, a new favorite of the group.

Played Memoir '44 on Sunday, Eastern Front.

To round things out, rolled several solo sessions of Roll Through the Ages: The Bronze Age

Oddly enough the only thing i played was my first game of dominion at a board game party my wife's boos put on. we didn't stay that long and when i walked in they were playing small world. once that was over they asked if anyone wanted to play dominion and i volunteered.

they had a decent selection of games so i was certain they had heard of boardgamegeek.com but sadly no one had so i felt like a dofus.

i hadn't bought dominion because it didn't seem right for me or the people i usually game with but i enjoyed it. I'll probably end up buying it. I can see why people don't like it after i've built my deck i feel like i should be ready to do something with it.

Storm the castle weekend of sorts...

Friday
1x - Castles of Burgundy we played with boards 3 and 5

After dinner my wife and I played a quick game of Castles of Burgundy before I had to take my daughter to her friend's house for an hour.

Some of my daughters friends play Magic on occassion and has thus expressed a small interest in learning how to play sometime. So as I had 45 mins to kill before picking her back up I went into Walmart and picked up a 2013 2p Booster Battle Pack for $10 to see what all the craze was about. It included two 20 card decks and 2 boosters to allow you to play a basic game out of the package. She was excited to learn...

Saturday
4x - Castles of Burgundy we played with boards 2-5

After my early morning run I read Ender's Magic thread from 2009 Magic as an affordable way to have fun with a family? Affordable Option #2: Drafts, which outlined a way I could consider buying into Magic without getting overly expensive.

The gaming focus of the day, however, for my wife and I was more storming the Castles of Burgundy. She finally won her first game in our forth and last game of the night. She picked acquired two buildings I needed to complete the high risk-reward gamble on board #2 which requires I place one of each kind of building or acquire the knowledge hex that allows duplicates to complete thus effectively countering my investment to score big points at the cost of other possible area control options.

Sunday
1x - King of Tokyo
2x - Castles of Burgundy we played with boards 2, 4, 7, and 8

On Sunday, a friend of mine taught my daughter how to play Magic as I watched and asked questions based on what I had read and watched online as their battle unfolded. She seemed to like it. I liked what I saw and look forward to trying it in this limited form to see whether or not and to what extent we buy some more cards to develop a couple of 60 card decks.

After the game of Magic we taught my friend King of Tokyo. My daughter avenged her loss with one life point left by pulling off a 2VP roll for the win.

In the evening my wife and I continued our new obsession with Castles by playing two more games before bed. She declared this is her new favorite.

meeple Keep playing...

This was an extended weekend, as Monday was a holiday...

The highlight definitely was the ALL ABOARD mini-tournament last Saturday, which was held during the monthly Open Gaming Meet. This was a tourney featuring both Ticket to Ride and Ticket to Ride: Europe, and the overall winner gets a brand new Risk Legacy game, and this was all with no entrance fee! Anyhow, my intent was to have my 8 yr old son Shawn join while I watch, but they needed 1 more guy to complete a table so I joined.

Shawn and me got in a practice game with the europe map, then it was onto the tourney. We both got to play a game each on the US and Europe maps (separate groups), and while Shawn got eliminated I ended up 5th out of the 8 qualifiers, as I finished 2nd in both my games. In the knock out quarterfinals (US map)I finished last though, but still had a ton of fun!

On Sunday got in our first play with:

with my 14 yr old daughter, plus Shawn. I found the game slightly more "fiddly" due to the relics and items, as well as the river mechanics, but it was still Small World, and I got to control the Balrog most of the time. Next time I will try to include selected races and powers from SW + expansions.

Before this, we got a 4P game (with the addition of my 17 yr old son Sherwin) of

with the
expansion, which was the first time my the 2 older kids tried the expansion. My daughter had a 36 point science build and ran away with a victory with 59 pts, Sherwin had 52 with a predominantly blue card focus, I had 51 and my youngest had 42 despite having a full 18 pts from his military.

Yesterday (holiday Monday), I taught
to my daughter, and had a 3 player game which also included Shawn. I managed to win with a score of 30 vs Sharlene's 25 and Shawn's 20. While I did an errand Shawn taught Sharlene
, and she thoroughly trashed him 120-74!

Finally, earlier last week I got a solo game of
, using the "Jackie" variant which simulates a 2nd player (Jackie) blocking off actions on the board. I got a score of 32 and could not renovate my house as Jackie kept getting most of the clay...

Great week!
