I don't think it's free any more. As far as I can tell, none of the Bill Banks Ancients games are being posted as free to print and play. The url for Relative Range (the hosting website here http://www.relativerange.com) only has an area for Ancients Deluxe.

I knew when I wrote that I shouldn't have, but you get my meaning.
And even his short work was long-winded.
But try a 6 turn scenario anyway.

Well simple wasn't a requirement. Just short.

And as the domain over which we are selecting games accordint to the list is wargames, and not games, then for a wargame, many of the scenarios are in fact quite short.

Using the first year scenario and the BPA weather rules, this is a short, EXCITING game. The first year scenario is easily do-able in an evening.

Personally, for the longer game, I like the sudden death victory conditions, which also creates 'shorter' games. (Not as short as this list requires, I suspect.)

Reminded of the one time I tried to play my copy of the game. We go a few turns, then I see him do a move over the Pontoon bridge with the Austrian side. He goes, "that is a major road, so it is opp free, right?" I go HUH? Man I was facing a hoard of Austrians.

Oh well, live and leanr. This is definitely worth being on this list though.

I have to lend my support for this gem. Like mentioned, it is a little abstract, but all the major components that made up the Pacific Theatre are represented. And the game does let a player make the strategic decisions without going into the tactical details.

Used to play this a lot on a "school night" (meaning an evening where I had to go to work the next day) and always got done in time for a night's sleep. Very exciting.

This is my favorite wargame largely because it is easy to learn and plays quickly. I agree that it captures the strategic flaver of the Civil War with clear delineation between the west and eastern fronts. It has stood the test of time--I've played all three editions. You can't go wrong with this one.

Really good into wargame. Short, clear rules, manageable unit count, plays quickly, and models an interesting situation.

Yes, I think this is a good choice, but it may not really scratch the grognard's itch. It's a bit more abstract, and doesn't provide the same pleasurable sense of destuction you find in some of these other games.

"Clash for a Continent" bears a slight resemblance to "Battle Cry" and "Memoir '44," but apart from the physical similarities, the command and combat systems are different (the game is not card-driven).

Very easy to learn with high replay value, quite evocative of the period it presents. Indians slip through the woods, Leaders plunge in or rally wavering units, Grenadiers stand tough, Militia is, well, militia, and Dragoons have good mobility with which to flee the field. It's just right.

With this game here, then you can even play out just one of either the "Western Front" OR the "Eastern Front" Campaigns, if you can't sit down for the enitirety of it all. There's even the "Patton's Fantasy" BATTLE of 'Red Star/White Star", while at least give this the chance to show its excellent premise where EACH "player" will 'control' BOTH an "Attacker" AND "Defender" for this! Check out its GAME "entry" HERE, for that "Western Front" VARIANT that should've been an integral 'part' of THIS, from the [i]"get go".

Decision made some 'improvements'. Created a Courland area box up north, and added some units for it. Truthfully, the only Decision reprint of an SPI game that I've seen where the improvements actually improved things was 30 Years War quad.

Another short, easy and fun block wargame is CG's 'War of 1812', though it has somewhat less historical color and with a low piece-count is more subject to luck favoring one side over the other.
So ultimately HotS would appear to offer more bang for the buck.

I've played this and very much liked it.
I don't know if it is a great intro wargame. It requires a unique sort of play, especially as the Americans. Good gateway for the Hannibal style games. Shorter than most of the others and you quickly learn the basic mechanics.

Neat game, lots of chrome in a relatively small package. But with the amount of chrome, this IS NOT a two-to-three hour game (unless one player is particularly bad).

Worth trying, though. I'm looking forward to playing "Strange Defeat," which uses the same basic system for a slightly less complex game.

Mark Herman (the designer of We the People) has been working on a new card-driven wargame called Washington's War. GMT has expressed interst in publishing it when Mr. Herman completes this design. Hasbro owns the rights to We the People and, from what I understand, they have no intention of either republishing it or letting Mr. Herman have the rights to his game .

A fun, quick little game. Not to be splitting hairs, but it's not so much a wargame as a game of war. It has a few of the trappings of wargames that make it a satisfying snack when you can't polish off a real wargame. Worth getting and playing.

War of 1812 uses Columbia's famous block system. It has solid history, lots of dice, and it plays in about 1.5 hrs. It's at the light end of the spectrum. Like many of Columbia's games, this game evokes the spirit of the war at a high level using a simple rule set.

A tense game, playable in a medium-short session, although I think it's difficult to get the gist of the tempo of the game until you have a game or two under your belt. I think Quebec 1759 is a little better, and a little easier for a beginner. Either game would be a great choice. Both fairly replayable, too.

Short? How long is a piece of sting?

If I am looking for a short wargame I am thinking in the vicinity of 90 minutes. I would see 3 hours as being a medium length game.

When I think of short (as far as a wagame is concerned, GDW put out its "Series 120" games. Each was on one map, had relatively few counters (making them quick to set up) and could be played in two hours or less.

I think there is folder on consimworld on the topic of recommending a short game.
