Today being Memorial Day, it got me thinking of all the men and women that have died for something larger than themselves. This, in turn, got me thinking about board games, and units in board games that also die for something larger than themselves.

This list is intended to document those games that have units whose sole purpose seems to be sacrificial. That is, the unit exists in the game in order to save other, more important units in the game.

I'll start the list out with a few from my own experience, but as this site is full of people with a vast knowledge of various boardgames, it is open for others to add the games that first come to their mind. The unit(s) in mind are in CAPS.

In April 1917, the British Royal Flying Corps sent relatively green pilots in relatively inferior planes against Germany's best (including Baron von Richthofen, the "Red Baron"). Predictably, the result was a tough time for the British. April 1917 later came to be called, "Bloody April."

Wings Over France simulates running a British squadron during Bloody April. In particular, the game includes some low-time, inexperienced, pretty horrible pilots, that are essentially cannon fodder.

The PEASANT MOBs of the Men of Hawkshold make great Cannon Fodder?

* You can get a lot of them because they are the lowest point value unit in the 1st four Armies (Men of Hawkshold, Orcs, Undead & Elves of Ravenwood).

* 2nd Lowest Courage (only the Ghoul Pack of the Undead has lower with a 9). This can be a problem but if you have a lot of them, so what. You just have to pump them up with Bravery before they battle.

* They are poorly equipped having only farming implements and no armor. They are only supposed to keep the enemy units busy so the better units can flank the enemy and destroy them.

Good units for Cannon Fodder in the other Armies would be:
CRAZED GOBLINS for the Orcs
ZOMBIES for the Undead
BROWNIES for the Elves of Ravenwood

Panzergruppe Guderian

Does anyone else provide a 0-0-6 for Cannon Fodder?

Take a close look at the soviet units on the right in the last row of red counters. I see about 8 guys with no other reason in life than to run away from german panzers. The units were marked on the back side with question marks and when they were in combat you found their true strength by turning them over. IIRC, the German player used movement points to do this, so these guys are the ultimate cannon fodder!

Each army in Wizard Kings has just such a unit. In the image, unit 2nd from the left on the bottom is the Glader. It is a 4 strength C1 unit that costs 1 point per step. Each army has a unit with identical stats. It's purpose is to soak off hits where possible to protect you other, more expensive units. These guys are the 'Red Shirts' of the Wizard Kings world.

This is for my dad, who was with the 110th Rgt, 28th ID at the "Bulge". Everybody remembers the Airborne at Bastogne, but the 28th Division, and in particular the 110th Rgt, bought the time for the paratroopers to be trucked in.

"Bloody 110" is the only game I'm aware of to go in to detail about the one sides battle for time that the regiment waged against awful odds. Alas, I don't have a copy.

In almost every other "Bulge" game, the 110th serves as a disposable speedbump to slow the advance of two Panzer and one infantry division as they race for Bastogne, and if they are still around after the first turn, it is a miracle.

Whenever I play a "Bulge" game, when the 110th meets it's usual grisly fate, I think of the old man who became somber every December 16th, and the young man with an M-1 who I never really knew.

In Memoriam, indeed.

This game takes full advantage of the old Classic Star Trek in-joke about how Red-Shirted Security Guards = Cannon Fodder.

Each time a player sends a landing party down to explore a planet, he decides which Ship's Officers to include.
The player also decides how many security guards to send along to absorb casualities and keep the officers from getting killed by bad adventure results.

And the poor, unsung 'red-shirts' don't even get their own counters to represent them like the Officers do. The player just tracks how many are in the party with a marker on a number track.

(See the 1-6 track on the right of the picture for the Klingon ship Swift Victory as an example.)

TRUCKS and HALFTRACKS. It's all wrong of course, but in the game even an unarmed (or barely armed) unit could block a key hex for one turn. Halftracks left wrecks which counted against stacking, so three dead halftracks = one impassible hex!

British Provincials. They're always the first to be flipped because they are drilled but lower in strength than regulars AND you can send them in to battle without regulars because they don't count as VP if you lose. Even better, at SP 2 they're stronger than the French Marines.

The ultimate is to send in a couple of provincials, roll a 1 or 6 on d6 so you can make a leader casualty check, and then kill Montcalm - which has happened to me. Killing a French leader is well worth sacrificing a couple of provincials.

In this "game", then the 'empty' hexes aren't! EACH is considered as having its very own "intrinsic" single 'point' of a "Garrison". So, there's neverending "speed bumps"-(for the enemy, at least), unless you just so happen to remain upon a 'hex', but WHO would want to? You can't "overrun" the vast 'steppes' without "moving on" eh?
