One of the best things about being British is never having to have silent pauses when trying to talk to people you don’t know very well, because we can always talk about the weather.

I don’t know why but we do seem to talk about the weather more than anyone else. I guess it might be because ours is so average all the time. We do get occasional very hot weather, but when we do we can’t cope with it. We also on occasion get very cold weather and we can’t cope with it. And guess what happens when it’s very windy? We can’t cope with it.

But for the vast majority of the time the weather is OK, could be a bit sunny, maybe a bit of rain, maybe a bit overcast but mostly not very extreme. So when it’s a couple of degrees warmer than the day before we just can’t resist the urge to comment on it.

‘much nicer day today’

‘you’re right yesterday was definitely not as nice’

So here are some games that have weather effects that could give you plenty to talk about next time you are stuck for anything better.

Thinking about games which have weather effects I seem to have come up with all games that have bad weather. There must be some games that have a good weather effect.

Let's see a game about climbing the second highest mountain in the world, that's bound to have weather effects, and indeed it does.

Every so often bad weather will hit the mountain and as you can guess its not good news. However you do get a few turns warning and it does not affect all of the mountain, so you can usually mitigate it to at least a degree by either getting out of the way or huddling in a tent.

What I want to know though is where do they get their weather forecasters from? As they are much more accurate than mine.

This game to me always seemed to have missed a huge opportunity. It comes with double sided boards with lots of twisty turny roads on them, perfect for a Rally and you can put them together nearly any way you want.

So what did they miss? Well both sides of each board are the same apart from one side has snow on it. I like the idea of the snow, but why not make the boards different for even more variety.

Never mind, the games does come with rules for Snow Tyres. You can do an all Snow rally or you can mix in snow and non-snow stages. The main effect of the snow is to slow you down. Who would have thought it.

Another driving game and more weather rules that boil down to a different choice of tyres.

You can choose from hard, soft or rain tyres. Right tyres for the right conditions definitely work better.

I am sure there are other racing games with similar rules, but I have had enough of tyres.

A bit of an undiscovered gem this one. Or at least it might be with a revised rule book.

Like most of the rules in the game you need to guess the designers intentions from the clues you get and it seems that the worse the weather the more likely the Planes won’t be able to perform in the Air Show, with older planes affected more than newer ones.

This is one of the key things I like about this game. The idea is to buy a collection of planes and display them at Air Shows. Older planes score more points but are affected more by the weather and are more likely to break down.

A train game set in the Rockies. Bad weather rules? You bet.

A very different train game. The routes are already marked on the board, but you need to use surveyors to ‘find’ them. There are lots of natural resources in the Rockies (Gold, Silver, Timber, Copper etc) but you need to locate them so you send out prospectors to ‘find’ them.

This means that although there are set routes the resources turn up in lots of different locations. Each year is broken down into four turns (one per season) and some of the tracks can not be used during the winter turn due to bad weather.

An interesting game that makes a real change of pace from 18XX or similar.

Not so much the game here as the Nordics know how to run trains in bad weather, but the components.

Take the train cards from other Ticket to Ride games and add snow and it just makes them look so much better. The whole package has a very festive feel to it.

You just know that if Santa plays Ticket to Ride this is the version he plays.

Not just this game but lots of war games, especially Eastern Front games have weather rules.

It usually shows up in the form of slower (or no) movement than usual and little or no air cover.

Maybe I should have used ASL as the entry as that has probably got several chapters just dealing with weather.

Whether is one of the primary parts of this game. Each day you see a whether forecast for the next day, with chances of it being sunny, overcast or stormy. The whether affects how much you can charge, or how many customers you have. As in real life usually the forecast is fairly accurate, but occasionally the whether man is completely off (two cards in the deck set whether without regard to the previous day forecast).

Fun quick game.

(Perhaps there are some wargames out there which model to this level of realism, but as I'm not a grognard, I have to rely on the knowledge of others here.) Unfortunately this title is a beautiful example of a nice gimmick without a decent game. Even when playing with just 2 my partner and I found the game too chaotic for its own good.

Weather plays a critical role: cloud, fog, and storms all affect combat operations; wind affects movement (upwind and downwind) via fuel usage; and "changing weather" shifts the wind, and moves the other cloud-type weather elements across/around the board.

This is a really neat implementation of weather, that hits my sweet spot of "simple to apply, yet detailed enough to feel realistic". Love it.

The special action die, which dictates the first part of each of your turns, is all weather related:

Sun - extra action
Rain - grow bamboo on any irrigated tile
Wind - take one action twice instead of two separate actions
Cloud - place a special environment token on a tile

and my favorite:

Lightning - zap the panda to any tile where he immediately eats a bamboo shoot out of, presumably, stress from being zapped by lightning.

Weather, ha, how about global warming, ice age and other climate changes?

The game features a weather climate wheel and well basically this is the way the game tracks weather, only on broader scale and big time increments, so it's called "climate". And your dinosaurs keep running around to where it's not too cold nor too hot, like Goldilocks.
