This is a list of semi-cooperative games in which the players play to win individually, but which they can lose together.

So, the players work to reach their individual goals, but their combined efforts should be sufficient to stave off some disaster which will cause them all to lose. I've also included some games in which the players can 'fail' thematically, but do not lose - instead, there is merely a different way of detemining the winner.

I don't know many of such games - feel free to add them if you can think of others.

For clarity: I'm not looking for cooperative games in which all players (with the exception of some traitors) work together and win together.

The players are noble families in Poland trying to stave off hordes of enemies together. Poland will burn if they don't work together, of course, you probably want some parts of Poland to burn, so you'll come out on top (i.e., the parts with the other players' estates). It's a fine balance between protecting personal interests and that of Poland itself.

Whosoever is still alive and has the most points at the end of the game wins. However, if, at the end of a round, everyone is dead, there is no winner. It is both entirely possible, and quite common.

In this scenario set for Catan, each player is trying to score their own victory points. Drilling for oil is a faster way to accumulate resources needed for building. However, if players aren't careful, they can do significant environmental damage to the island, resulting in everybody losing.

I can't believe this one hasn't been added already.* It could be the first game with this property ever published.

If you get wiped out, you take a "final strike" in which you launch all your nukes (usually against the player who wiped you out). This may very well wipe out that player's nation, so he gets his own final strike, and so on.

Mutually assured destruction happens quite a bit in this game.

*Especially since the subject of this game is the same as the subject of the song from which its title is taken.

It's entirely possible (indeed, likely) for everyone to die in this race for the treasure game. I've not played the reprint; I think FFG actually played up the lethality a bit, by requiring everyone to make it to the centre and back out, before you can claim a win. In the original, one of the best strategies available was to leave the dungeon as soon as you'd found your first piece of treasure, relying on everyone else getting killed. Sure, you only looted a pathetic 5GP piece of trash - but at least you're alive. One of your fellow adventurers is probably still alive as well, but that's only because he's still falling down the Bottomless Pit...

You can play Forage mode on Deserted Animals with a condition that if none reaches 20pts before all game tiles are depleted - none is a winner and there are only losers. For that to happen you would most likely have to play with all 8 players, because that is when the game is the most intense as you can't really find a safe place on the map where you could avoid attacks from other players. So when someone takes the lead - others will drop him/her back down pretty fast Last time we played it like this, we ended up with more than 1/2 of the board depleted. We have not yet managed to deplete the whole board on Forage mode. On Survival mode it has happened multiple times, but then you still get to have your winner.

Dragonriders of Pern presents the struggle among the Leaders of the six different Weyrs to be recognized as leader of Pern. Each player vies with the others for the support of the Lord Holders while simultaneously keeping Pern free of Thread. If the northern continent of Pern has been so Threaded that it cannot support life, then all the players lose, along with Pern. (From the game description.)

I bought this game when it first came out -- 1983! -- because I was a big fan of the books. However, once I read the rules and discovered that the dragonriders actually interfere with each other when they fight Thread -- which they never did in the books as it went completely against their training -- I lost interest and have never played my copy.

Although this game is all about monsters beating each other up, each player also controls some military units which are used more as harassment of the opposing monsters. However, there is a situation at the end of the game (which I have seen happen, though it is rare) where the last monster standing is severely weakened from the battle and is taken down by the government's genetically-modified-super-soldier (Captain Colossal) and/or by the government's own robot (Mecha Monster). In this case, all players lose, regardless of which player controlled these military units.

If the players collectively fail to defeat the Axis the Allies lose, but if the Axis are defeated, there is a victor of the peace that follows. There is also a two player and solo variant."

The Ancient One is randomly determined each game, but most of them involve it Awakening after a period of time, and then hunting down the necromancers one by one. It's possible the necromancers can all get killed by the Ancient One or fail to destroy it within the time limit.

The "Entropy Beast", a persistent Hazard card from this Cosmic Encounter expansion, once active, destroys the most-populated planet in the game every time a Wild or Special destiny card is drawn. From then on, if any player drops below 3 planets in their system, all players immediately lose the game.

This is a little different from most of the games in this list, because this potential disaster doesn't always activate every game. However, it does come up, and often requires a real dedicated team effort from all players to stop the "all players lose" condition, so I think it still fits the spirit of the list.

And despite not being active in every game, all players losing by The Entropy Beast is still a more likely scenario that requires more cooperation to avoid than some other games with a permanent all-players-lose condition, like Chaos in the Old World
