I just backed another Kickstarter effort. It got me thinking about *why* I back Kickstarter efforts and how I feel about it. It also got me thinking that alot of other folks are clearly backing stuff and I'm kinda curious how they feel about it. So here's a Geek List for that.

Backed: Add an item that you have backed. Tell about why you backed it - recount that moment when you clicked the button. What pulled you into it? Why did you pick the backer level you did?

Received: After you add an item, say if you received it or not. How long did it take? Did it arrive in good condition as you expected? Were there any bumps in the delivery process? Any fear about receiving it?

Regrets: If you received it or not, tell about your feelings now that you have backed it. What regrets do you have? Did you considered unbacking? If you received the game, did it fail to meet expectations?

Backed:
I back this game as part of a "minigame" library that also includes the following

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/102148/noir-killer-vs...

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/125547/grimoire-shuff...

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/125549/infinity-dunge...

Received: I have not received anything yet but the timeline is suppose to be sometime around the beginning of December to be shipped out.

Regrets: No regrets. The publisher is Level 99 games and I preordered one of their other releases (which I love) BattleCON. So I was excited when I saw this collection on Kickstarter. These are the games I'm most excited about getting right now. There isn't anything new coming out that I have found very intriguing. Also, since I backed at the $50 level with the stretch goals there are a couple more games added into the package.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/127258/blades-of-lege...

"Master Plan" which sounds like the most interesting one to me. A supervillian game show challenge. Just looked again and this has been added http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/129971/master-plan

These along with 10 postcard sized microgames, I think there is going to be a lot of fun to be had in this package. I really can't wait until I get my hands on these

edit: added link to Master Plan

mbmbmbmbmb
Backed:Kickstarted this one in Dec '11 during a bout of acute kickstarteritis. I thankfully recovered since then. I backed this one because I liked the tacked-on pizza theme and the perceived abstract "strategy" (I like abstracts). Paid USD 45 incl. USD 20 for shipping, incl. an expansion. I wouldn't do that again these days. Paying 40% of total price on shipping is insane..

Received: In Mar '12, as originally announced, I was pleased with that. I like Gryphon Games KS projects because from what I see, they tend to adhere to the advertised timeline. Very little communication from the project leaders, but I suppose when everything goes smoothly you don't mind.

Regrets: The jury's still out on this one. While I am impressed by the the sturdiness of the box and the quality/functionality of the insert, I only got to play a 2-player game so far and that's not enough for me to make up my mind. I can't find anyone to play it with, really. Not as "strategic" (in a "GIPF strategic" sense) as I would have hoped.

All in all, while I like the product, I don't think I'll ever see a return on my USD 45 "investment".

So, if my only options are these, then I shall...
mbmbmbmbmb
Backed: My first-ever Kickstarter pledge (well, not really, I also make a pledge for Flash Point: Fire Rescue - 2nd Story, but I end up selling my Flash Point copy to a friend, and thus I stepped back, but worry not, my friend then backed the expansion). I bought this game through Game Crafter, and then the KK campaign started. So I jumped in because of the increased production value for the game (an actual box, that can hold sleeved cards and a proper booklet manual for the base game and the expasion). So now I intend to keep the better copy when it arrives and give the other to a friend that also really enjoy the game as I do.

Received: Not yet. The delivery estimate is for late october - but the designer informed that, due to some stretch goals, the date can be pushed to mid-november. I'm cool with this, since I already have the game (minus the Plague Rat card).

Regrets: None. Jason, the designer, has been amazingly supportive throughout the whole campaign - when the cards passed by a few changes in the layout - and afterwards, giving many updates. I played the game a lot more and is a success with my gaming group. So I'm sure it will be played when it arrives.

Edit: If anyone is interested, the game is available for pre-order at Funagain. Here is the link.

Backed: Backed because I liked the idea of a co-op that also has competitive play, liked the art style.

Received: Not yet, has been delayed past the due date as they decided to change all the art that was shown in the kick starter, it also appears that they didn't have a manufacturer lined up.

EDIT: Finally received the game mat and all and was greatly impressed, the art whilst it has taken a different direction is great and overall components are top notch. Had the first play last night with 3 payers vs zombie player, we got our asses kicked... overall enjoyed the gameplay, player elimination want too bad because once one of us fell we all fell shortly thereafter (if your worried about player elimination why not just play that the humans choose who takes damage when there is a choice and when 1 human dies the zombies win?)

Regrets: Backed due to the art - they changed it, still haven't received it and its the first kick starter I backed, I am pretty sure ill receive others before I see this one. They also promised monthly handwritten letters which I thought was a different idea but didn't care for much but I haven't received one yet.
EDIT: Rules could be better written

Backed: I could take or leave pirates, but I'm always on the lookout for neat little card games, and I love custom decks of standard playing cards. This project offered both.

Received: Yep.

Regrets: The game is uninteresting and the cards are of decent quality as far as board game cards go, but not up to snuff relative to playing cards. Even the price, $25, is too high for me to say that in retrospect it was worth the gamble. I think this just happened to get me while I was still too enamoured with KS to think critically.

Backed: Railways of the World is my favorite game/system to date. I enjoy it everytime I play. It is also a big hit with my game group. I currently have the East and West U.S., Mexcio, and England & Wales maps. So getting Canada and the cross country or "transcontinental" rules, etc. was a no brainer. It also constitutes my first backed KS project.

Received: Still active on KS and isn't expected until June 2013.

Regrets: The one thing I had always hoped for in whatever KS project I backed was that it would have cool stretch rewards. With RONA, I am disappointed thus far that most of the stretch rewards (e.g. Major Line cards) should have been inlcuded from the start like all the other expansions; and the new plastic mini expansions that have been added (for an additional $5 pledge each) are weak. They are too big and reuse the molds for the Empty City markers which just does not excite me. I'm hoping a few more stretch goals will be reached and something unique and special is announced.

Regardless, I'm sure this is a game that my friends and I will enjoy.

meeple Keep playing...

The recent Reaper Miniatures "Bones" project

Backed:

I like miniatures, mainly historical but also, to a certain extent, fantasy. Reaper does some pretty good stuff, and is a well-established company. I thught this project had a good chance of getting off the ground and delivering pretty close to what they promise.

Despite all that I was still on the fence until they started adding other items like paints and miniature cases as well at the ever increasing amount of stretch goals available to the USD$100 level "Vampire" pledge.

Their option to trade in the Sophie miniature for $25 of other stuff* sealed the deal for me. I wasn't lumbered with an expensive miniature that I didn't want and instead used the saved cash to pick up another miniatures case.

Received:

It only finished a little while ago, so nothing yet. From what I understand the paints will be delayed until March next year as they had 100 000 bottles ready but received just over 300 000 pledges for paint alone.

This has been a remarkable Kickstarter project as it raised nearly 3.43 million dollars, making it the 3rd highest earning kickstarter project to date.

With such a large project I freely accept that delays are likely and appreciate that Reaper are doing their best to communicate updates to their backers.

Regrets:

None yet. For fifty cents a miniature I don't mind waiting a while. I'm pretty confident that I'll be able to swap/sell any miniatures that I don't like so I remain pretty happy with this, my first, KS project.

* The option was also given to exchange this model from the 'stock'one in a swimsuit to one in a birthday suit for an extra $3. Something for everyone ...

Backed The Resistance is one of my absolute most favorite games. Backing this was a no brainer for me. I even backed it the first day of the campaign because the first so many backers would get anime promotional cards for the resistance. My first printing copy of the Resistance is beat up from so many plays, so getting replacement cards will be very welcome.

Received: Not yet, but if everything goes as planned it will be shipping next week.

Regrets: Not at all. I can not wait to play this game, and get my chance to be Merlin.

I am very shocked no one has discussed this one yet---

No issues on receipt or communication

And ironically NO KS game I have ever received ( I have 10 now and 3 more coming ) has fancier or more excellent bits. From box to board this game is quite simply gorgeous. And I adore the theme.

But as has been commented before on the game's page, after LITERALLY two dozen readings-- the rules might as well be in Greek. You even have to dig . dig .. DIG to EVEN find an example of HOW A TURN works. I really do think there is not only a good but perhaps superb game in here. I wonder if I shall ever find someone to teach it to me, much less get MY copy to a table.

I wrote a lenghty response here but went ahead and lost it. So, here's an abridged version:

Backed: First kickstarter for me. Game was already established and I knew what I was getting. Got maximum completion that included pretty much everything. Akash'bhuta looked really cool.

She's cool.

Received: A few weeks ago. Typhoons in China and customs officials caused some delays, but overall nothing bad. The game was only one month late.

Regrets: None so far, though I have only played three games. Had a great time so far.

Backed: For better or worse, it was the first time I had seen the words "Kickstarter Exclusive Promos" and I hate the thought of missing out on a good promo. I've learned since that I'll never have the money to keep up with every project that uses those words.

Received: It was originally stated that it would ship out in July and I didn't receive it until September. I've heard of worse delays, but it was the second project I backed and I started getting antsy. When it arrived the box insert was pretty busted up, which I understand was common. Not a big deal though I probably would have tossed it anyway. Also the very kickstarter exclusive that tied me in hasn't shipped yet, but I guess it'll show up eventually.

Regrets: I'm having a hard time getting it to hit the table and it's only happened once. It has potential, but it seems difficult to build up a defense against Wrath and Envy. It's also really easy to get into a thankless arms race at times. I may be entirely wrong and just having a hard time getting it to hit the table.

Backed: I loved the art in this one, and the Magic the Gathering feel it exuded, without having to fork out wads of money to have a half-decent deck. The campaign ended 24-APR-2012 and easily surpassed its initial target. ETA was initally Aug 2012.

Received: No. Granted, a PnP PDF was sent to backers, which is nice. Pictures of the hard proof were posted mid-October, ETA is now mid-November.

The project leader announced the delay end of Aug, simply saying that "As with most Kickstarter projects and manufacturing, there are delays, hiccups, etc. Shadow Days is no exception. Final production has not yet begun. The printer's best estimate for delivery is now the first week of November. We'll know more in the coming weeks." Meh.

Granted, the hard proof looks great, and the insert is meant for sleeved cards, which is a definite plus for me.

Regrets: No, I'm still looking forward to it. While the project leader has posted no less than 51 updates so far, which is brilliant, I think a quick apology would have been nice too. Then again I'm a bit old-fashioned that way.

Backed: This is the 6th game I backed and was drawn in by the awesome art and components. I was new at KS so was backing a lot of stuff without doing a lot of research or reading of rules.

Received: I don't remember this being too late and was very impressed with the components, as good as advertised.

Regrets: I brought it to show to my gaming group but they weren't really interested in it. I finally got it to the table at a local con and it kind of fell flat. This might not of been the game's fault since I had to pull the character cards out so a couple of the young players would have an easier time. But at the end of the game no one seemed to be interested in playing again so I sold it off.

I found if a first game goes badly then the game is a bit "tainted" and its difficult to get back to the table. I probably should of attempted to play it only with experienced gamers and maybe it would of gone better.

Backed: I went for Super Showdown because I am a comic freak and it looked interesting, from afar.

Received: The game was about 6 months late. It was promised for December 2011 and the games were sent out in May/June 2012.
Communication about this was ok, though.
With:
Super Showdown: DISTRESS Kickstarter Exclusive Card

Regrets: Doesn't look that interesting any more on my shelf, so I am looking to sell / trade it just traded it in a math trade.

Backed: Put in for two decks of cards, mainly for the artwork.

Received: In July.

Regrets: Kinda. Going through the game mechanics, it seems to be a slight variant of Rock Paper Scissors, and the overall thinness of the provided decks compared to the price I put in for them gives me a little bit of buyer's remorse. This may change if I ever get it to the table, though.

Backed: Sounded really neat, and from the same company that brought Omen.

Received: Yep.

Regrets: A bit. I've played a handful of games and have concerns over what seems like a huge first player advantage. It's possible that this may not be the case, and I do want to try it some more... but I find it difficult to muster the enthusiasm necessary to bring it to the table.

I do really like the artwork, though, and it's almost worth it just for that.

Backed: Funded on July 22nd, I backed this one early as I'm a fan of flicking games, I like the pizza theme, and I know the designer. Had the chance to playtest it as well and it looked very nice.

Received: Not yet. December is what they said, hope this isn't too late.

Regrets: None at all, this is a ton of fun.
