Also, list is now in reverse chronological order.

(Part I (personal projects) may be found here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist.php3?action=view&listi... )

Here is a look at the real-life, bona fide, actual mapmaking projects I've been able to be involved in so far. A huge thanks goes out to Adam Starkweather, Mark Simonitch, Neil Randall, Richard Berg, Brian Youse, Ken Dingley, Jerry Taylor, and Gene Billingsley for thinking highly enough of my work to offer me the chance to work on these! Been loving it, and can't wait to see what I'll get to make next...

Hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoy making them!

Very nice. Guessing by the "zones" is it going to be a block game?

I wonder how useful the "fog of war" feature would be. Every Zulu block would simply represent another buttload of Zulus!

I like the textures. Nicely done. Pleasing to the eye.

I'm less enamoured with the font used for the province names. I'd prefer a more classical font like AUGUSTUS as I consider those more legible and more fitting.

My main beef with the map relates to the province borders being drowned out by the squiggly space connection lines. I think the provinces need to stand out more.

Personally I really like how the Hannibal map is done in this regard. Space connections are straight and province borders curved. A good contrast.

Furthermore, the busy nature of the space connections makes it harder to grasp the strategic situation. Straight or very smooth lines are imo the way to go. Same bothers me with the COM map as well, I have to admit.

Here's a look at where the map stands for this upcoming review of Chickamauga. Greatly expanded coverage area allows for more freedom and several earlier scenarios. Thanks to Dave Friedrichs for his help with the contour lines. Actually got to go out to Chickamauga last weekend and walk the ground, immensely helpful. For one thing you realize how small some of these landmark structures really were! Hope you like, I think it's a pretty successful attempt to blend complexity with aesthetics (esp. regarding seeing the contour lines through the woods).

A vast map for Leonard To's upcoming monster on the Chinese War of Resistance (1937-1945). Thanks to Knut Grünitz for his help creating mountain textures. Really like how this one is shaping up, still has a ways to go in terms of content - a lot of data to convey. But the overall look is set, and I really like some of the functional things here. Expecially that our four primary colors (red, green, blue, rust) lock perfectly into each side - in other words each of these colors always stand for one of the four player sides, everywhere.

I've got the opportunity to visit Japan once again, this time for GMT's upcoming P500 block game on the battle Sekigahara and the unification of Japan under Tokugawa. This is a look at the undermap (no charts or gameplay info yet) which I've antiqued in several new ways, most notably by graphically acknowledging the fold lines that will exist on the printed map. I hope I've turned this to advantage to heighten the period feel of the map while remaining subtle enough to not interfere with play. The twelve point compass is the traditional means of navigation in the Far East. Enjoy!

Well done indeed! I like the gritty look. Were it only for Alexander and this map, I think you'd be quickly becoming my favourite map artist. :)

Only changes I'd like to see changed:

- port symbols more visible
- tables more visible/readable (how about a semi-transparent background?)
- those tables etc. ought to have IMO a north-south orientation for consistency's sake and for equal usability for both sides
- yellow numbers box more medieval font & style
- How about a nice map border?
- small point: border of Aleppo entity ought to also be seen under Mosul box just as with the Edessa case
- Muslim and Frankish symbol look to my tastes a little to perfect, 3D-stylish, computery
- Can you bring back the Nile?

Visually nice (as far as any map can go that is merely the background for an abstract black-and-white graph), but having the type of location (mountains, desert) completely covered up when a piece is placed there is a bad idea and makes for endless shuffling during play as players want to make sure. Something should be done with the shading or shape of those boxes.

I like the new&improved map even better. Good choice of fonts and who doesn't love those period inset pictures and the Arabic calligraphy?

I think the roads also hit the sweet point. Not distractingly squiggly (as COM's are, to my mind), yet dented enough to give you that organic vibe.

Looks like you found a clever way to denote ports by putting the city name of ports into the surrounding sea and colouring the space border.

It appears that the game was streamlined since I last read the rules, as both desert and mountain spaces look the same. Good to have terrain difference highlighted outside the actual space border.

To use an American expression, I think you've hit a home run.

I've been working with Jerry Taylor on the artwork for his forthcoming blockgame on the Wars of the Roses. Getting to do labels and cards as well, I think this is coming together quite well. This is the final playtest map, and is very close to what the end result will be like in terms of look and feel, though borders and heraldry may well change in the interim... Especially fun will be the Shakespearean quotes littering the heir cards. Hope you like it!

I have a submission in for the artwork for GMT's forthcoming redux of Richard Berg's Blackbeard. Last but not least, a map created for Richard Berg's latest project for GMT, The Conquerors: Alexander the Great. Here again I tried to create an ancient look, but with the detail of satellite imagery. A challenge, and I have been accused of loving brown too much on my maps. Perhaps so, but I love how this one turned out. My only question is what conqueror comes next in the series - where do you go from Alexander? :)

Ha! I of course didn't mean to imply there were no other worthy topics, only that Alexander seems to be starting at the top of the list and all other conquerors to come in the series would be not quite at that level.

I can see where you'd be accused of liking browns too much, but that might serve well, over the course of staring at the map in a Berg-length game. This might be less visually distracting, when pondering your moves.

This little game is something of a euro-wargame, if the mating may be forgiven. I had a good deal of fun creating this, and though it is the simplest of these maps by far, I think it went through more drafts than most novels. The rivers were particularly irksome to get right. Getting to do the counters, too, which are an impressive one inch size.

Then came the monstrous task of retooling the massive map for Masahiro Yamazaki's War for the Motherland. MMP is releasing this as Red Star Rising. Adam and I both wanted to try something new; but it's sometimes hard to get grognards excited about change, so the original map draft was eventually rejected as too avant-garde ( http://www.west2productions.com/Mapology/D1.htm). This more earth-toned version prevailed.

First, I'll never buy this, because I hate 2oth century wargames. Second, about the maps. I strongly prefer the version at your 'mapology' page over the version above. I think it looks better and will make the counters stand out more. The contrast in the version above is too high for a map that will be filled with tiny counters.
I'm so-so about the slightly different font in the Mapology version. The stain effect is very nice, but in 'Soviet at start', for example, it is very clear that the stains are part of the font file: all 't's have the same smoky stain at the top. That I don't like.

I think that the black writing on "red" is tough to read. The numbers in the CRT are hard to read, especially the "red on black" at the top. Making the background for the writing a cream color might make it easier to read, especially from across a table. You might keep it in theme by making the charts, tables, and explainations look like dispatches laid on a table. I like the "map" part of the map, but I'm not crazy about the font for the larger cities, I'd keep it like the smaller cities.

I think that I would find the more conventional map easier to use, simply because it adheres to certain conventions from actual maps. The colouring in the alternate map carries no real information about the type of terrain - what type of surface does light green represent? This would require a mental "terrain key lookup" every time I move a piece. Sure, eventually one would get used to it.

The red cities framed in gray are hard to read - too little contrast there. That bit would not go away with greater length of play.

This is the first work I did, a rice paper map for the upcoming Samurai Lords, MMP's redux of Yukihiro Kuroda's Feudal Lord. This is my personal favorite of all the work I have done. Brian Youse at MMP told me it is now his favorite map in the history of wargaming, and when Adam showed this to one of the interested Japanese parties, she was sure that it was done by a Japanese artist. What higher compliments could I ask for? Hope you like it too...
