It seems that we're a collector type here at BGG. I'm curious, what things other than games do you collect?

As a kid I collected just about everything, candles, soaps, elephant ornaments, feathers, rocks, shells, lolly wrappers...the list goes on.

As an adult I'd say the main things I collect (other than games) are fossils, minerals and books (mostly popular science).

In fact, now that you mention it, I realise that all four collections are actually displayed next to each other in my loungeroom. (The top shelf is fossils, the second one is minerals and the books are all popular science)

Pop tabs!

I'm not sure why but for some reason I have around 100k. The trick to pop tabs is that you have to clean them just right or they develop a funk.

The Shadow. Love the old pulps (being reprinted now by Sanctum Publishing). Have the DC comics from the '70s (great) and '80s (not as much). New comics from Dynamite now . I've got statues, a ring, and copies of the radio show too.
I don't, however, have the game cry. But I do have a copy of the RPG Daredevils which tried to recreate the theme (with varying success).

I collect DVDs and Bluerays. I currently own about 1500. My very first DVD was Blade and I bought it to watch on my cutting edge computer with DVD Drive. It had a whole bunch of DVD-ROM features that I geeked out about for weeks. From then on I was addicted and have bought a movie or so a week since then. My "The Thing" DVD is awesome, it has a clear "Icey" cover that slips over a screaming face to look frozen when its all together. I'm a sucker for a cool box.

I've collected Beatles memorabilia since I was about 4 - original stuff whenever I can find/afford it, and replica stuff when I can't. (Replicas are also usually what people can afford to gift me with!)

About fifteen years ago, I got to play Flip Your Wig with a friend of mine who'd kept her old copy from childhood. It's just a roll and move (with a little bit of set collection), but it's good silly fun with other Beatles fans.

I also got to meet Paul McCartney (who, I'm happy to say, broke the rule of "never meet your heroes," and was nothing but gracious, friendly, funny and warm to my family and I) so I've got some signed personalized stuff from that.

I collect U2 memorabilia when I happen across it, too.

I've got a 100 piece or so collection of antique medical equipment, the most interesting item of which is probably an 1840s nebulizer in near-mint condition (don't have any pics, sorry, still unpacking things from a move).

I've got a very large collection of US political memorabilia, all original, the oldest piece of which is a carved wooden donkey that was given to Democratic delegates at the 1944 convention (FDR's last nomination/election)... plus tons of stickers, buttons, signs, posters, etc all from rallies and conventions. I myself was a delegate in 2008, so I have a bunch of stuff from that that was given to delegates only, as well. A lot of that stuff stays in meticulous storage, partly because I've run out of room and partly because it's so impossible to replace.

And, while I don't technically *collect* books, there's never been a wall in any place I've ever lived that didn't have a very full bookshelf along it.

And the most expensive collector's item I've ever bought happens to be a book, which to my knowledge is one of about 10 remaining copies in the world, and happened, by sheer chance, to be signed by the author. (The book was printed in India in the early 80s, and when the printer realized what they were printing, they burned all copies without exporting any back to the US, so as far as I know, the only ones that survived were the 10 copies advanced to the author himself pre-publication).

.... and yet, people *always* complain they don't know what to get me for birthdays and holidays...

Tea lover here.

Well collecting is a process - teas get consumed and new take their place.
But in the meantime, there are 3 drawers of them
one for green
one for white, black, oolong
one for scnted green, mate and herbal

sometimes spending as much for teas as for a game or even more.

(okay so teas occupy less space than games, which took over a whole cabinet, then again teas I have cost more per volume than games)

I've got records, books, The 39 Clues cards, nearly all the D&D 4th Edition books, NES games, anything animated that I enjoyed gets bought, Bibles (most prized is my Order of the Eastern Star Bible), Rubik's puzzles/games and similar stuff, musical instruments (sort of - don't have many, but I've got more than most - though I keep having to give up the organs I get due to space, think I've owned four different ones at this point), and scores for rock music that include keyboard parts (there's not a lot of this out there - most of it's that piano/vocal/bass stuff that doesn't have very good transcriptions of the keyboard parts).

But what I seem to collect the most is odd knowledge. I'm not talking trivia, like the chief export of Luxembourg (steel, chemicals, and rubber in case you were wondering), I'm talking about things like sentences that use every letter of the alphabet ("The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog." is the most famous).

Just recently I was reorganizing some of my shelves so that I could get all my books on them and found a printout about isograms - words that don't have any letter repeat, like "uncopyrightable".

And this weird knowledge isn't just language based, it includes math (love some of the stranger things Pythagorus and his followers made up), science, religion, music (Mozart wrote a short violin piece called "Table Music for Two" that is played by laying the one page on a table between the two violinists - both play from top to bottom from their own point of view, so that the music doesn't really have a right-side up or upside-down), everything.

Printouts, files on my computer and on disks, or just things I've written down. I keep finding random things I've saved every time I start going through stuff to organize, or reorganize it.

In no particular order:

- Wrestler biographies & action figures
- Comic book trade paperbacks (I like the stories collected in 1 place and don't want to worry about value or rarity)
- Movies/DVDs, but stick mostly to new releases as they come out

I went through a phase of collecting original comic art pages, mainly from the DC Vigilante series of the 80's. I found that could get expensive pretty quick.

I collect coins and paper currency from around the world. Most is late 20th century, but I have some interesting ancient coins, including a shell coin from ancient China before the invention of bronze coins, a coin from the crusader state of Acre, and a fair number from precolonial Ceylon (though some of them are fakes). The paper currency is nowhere near as old, though I have some from the mid 19th century.

I collect evil eye amulets and Hamsa hands from Greece, Turkey and the middle east.

I also collect wind-up toys. I seriously love these things.

Lastly I collect beers. This is a weird one, because the whole point of obtaining a unique brew is to drink it, especially since beer can indeed go bad if it sits in a bottle for too long. So what I do is take notes on each tasting. I have tasted and taken notes on over 700 unique beers, and I haven't even scratched the surface. The latest beer that will be added to my collection by the end of this week is "SobeRing Thought" - a 1% alcohol beer brewed in New Zealand for use on the set of the Lord of the Rings movies. My best buddy is a kiwi, and is bringing me back a bottle from his current trip home!

Like several others that have posted already, I collect retro video games. I've been heavy into collecting for about three years now.

Currently I have:

~270 NES games
~100 SNES games
~40 Genesis games
~80 Atari 2600 games
~30 Gameboy games
~20 N64 games

Then I have a handful of games for the Turbografx 16, PS1, PS2, Game Gear, GBA, Atari Lynx, and Virtual Boy. And I have the consoles for all of these.

My wife, while not a gamer, has allowed me to take control of one room in our house to store all my games. Pretty sweet setup with two TVs, movie posters from the 80s, and some cool retro video game accessories. It's the smallest room in the house, but easily has the most stuff

Ironically, though, that board game is one I don't have. I am 22 years old, so I was just young enough to have missed this when it was new. If ANYONE has it, I'd love to trade/buy it from you. (This doesn't even show the comics. Don't get me started on those.)

Later I shifted to collecting more detailed Neptun World War II models. Here are a couple pics:

Any other collectors of these out there?

I know video games have already been mentioned by several users, but I, too, am a sucker for them, specifically the N64. However, that red PS3 in the picture is probably my most prized possession, and there is a fun little anecdote about it.

Last school year, right before the release of the PlayStation Move, Sony did a bus tour across the nation, coming to college campuses to advertise their upcoming games and their new SimulView TV for use with PS3. (Basically, it's a 3D TV made specifically for PS3, where two players can play a 3D game at the same time, and each see a different image on the same screen. Pretty cool.)

Anyway, the CEO of PlayStation's son is a student with yours truly at the University of Arizona (BEAR DOWN!), and so the first stop on the tour was at U of A. The CEO had tagged along to see his son, and, because he loved U of A, he had a custom, one-of-a-kind PS3 made to be raffled off. (You see where this is going.)

For the week or so that they were on campus, all 40,000 students' eyes were on that PS3. The raffle was set to be held at 1 PM, and it was one of those you-must-be-present-to-win types of things. There has been exactly one time that I ditched work. It was that day. I must admit, I straight up lied to my boss and told her I had a study session to attend, so that I could be present on the off chance I won. I got there at 12:45, and stood there in the cold rain, waiting. 1 PM came and went, and the raffle still hadn't happened. The announcer assured us all that it still would, so we stuck around. 1:15 rolled around, 1:30 rolled around, 1:45 rolled around. I had class at 2, so when, at 1:45, the announcer said it would happen in 5 minutes, I decided that no college experience would be complete without at least one ditched class. I already ditched work, why not?

At 1:50 PM, the announcer came out in front of everyone. I figured that, since I knew I was just wasting my time and I wouldn't win, he would read off a name that wasn't mine, and I'd still have time to make my 2 PM class. When he drew the name "Stephen Hall," I was thankful it was raining, because no one could tell that I might have peed my pants. I won that one-of-a-kind PS3, a 3D TV, and about 300 bucks worth of other PS3 goodies. Best day of my life. Needless to say, I didn't go to class. whistle

EDIT: Grammar.

I collect owls!

Not real, actual living owls but rather owl figurines of any size or shape. I will collect stuffed animals, carved, stone, glass, you name it. I have owl keychains, owl necklaces and pendants, owl shirts.

I have owl slippers. They are comfy and make me feel wise.

If you have any cool or unique owl figurines, let me know and I'll gladly trade you for them!

I collect Laserdiscs.
I love the old format for movies for two reasons. One is that they all have CD quality, uncompressed sound. It makes up for the lower quality picture, IMHO. The second reason is that the movies have full art covers that are much larger and more decorative than DVD or blu-ray cases. I have created a way to store the better titles on the wall, creating a nice display..
