This Geeklist is a repository of the pop culture, graphical, and artistic influences behind the Blend Slates in VivaJava: The Coffee Game. I have received numerous requests as to the secret origins of the Blend Slate art and names, and so I present the full account as to the origins and influences that affected their creation. Enjoy!

7:45 AM should be one of the most familiar Blend Slates in all of VivaJava since each player will see it every game - after all, it's one of two starter Slates that are placed on the Best-Seller List during set-up. The inspiration for this Blend Slate is pretty straightforward - one of the most popular and enduring coffee brands in the United States is 8 O'Clock Coffee (http://www.eightoclockcoffee.com/), and 7:45 AM is a loving nod to that morning stalwart.

Since Average Joe is guaranteed to pop up in every game of VivaJava (it's a starter slate), we wanted to make sure that this homage was very special. And, so, the average joe that is depicted in the coffee steam is none other than VivaJava designer TC Petty III. This slate was designed by Darrell Louder who used a profile picture of TC filming the VivaJava Kickstarter video for his inspiration.

It's no secret around Dice Hate Me Games HQ - we love games with camels. But most importantly, we love one game with camels the most - Yspahan. Before TC introduced me to VivaJava at Origins 2011, I was introduced to TC while he had a copy of Yspahan safely tucked under his arm. While I didn't get to play Yspahan that Origins (luckily, though, I played and loved VivaJava), he did introduce Cherilyn and me to the game later that year at our Carnival funding party. It is now one of our most cherished games, and we sought to immortalize it - and its camels - in a Blend Slate.

The art influence is a mix between vintage travel posters and vintage cigarette posters - both a wonderful source of inspiration for classic graphic design.

This is one of the easiest Easter Eggs in the VivaJava art. We wanted to pay tribute to the first successful game release from Dice Hate Me Games, Carnival, but put a special coffee spin on it. Thus was born the coffee cup Ferris wheel.

This one is pure Darrell Louder. All we did was come up with the name (a reference to carpe diem - latin for "seize the day") and Darrell ran with it. Cup-A-Diem certainly channels some Russian propaganda posters from the 30s and 40s, but more than likely it's a blend that VivaJava CoffeeCo created to lure in some hippiesters from Fremont.

The name of this Blend Slate is a reference to the famous Copacabana nightclub in New York City. In its heyday of the 40s, 50s and 60s, the night club had a strong Brazilian influence in its decor and ambience, and we wanted to channel that in the Blend Slate art. As a side note, at the VivaJava CoffeeCo. Cup o'Cabana is a light roast cousin to the dark and rich Samba Mama blend.

During production of our first game, Carnival, we discovered that we had room for one more card on the print sheet. I turned to Cherilyn and issued her a challenge: Design a game that can be played with a single card. Thus was born Lucky Dice. We both thought it was a fun little lark, but we were pleasantly surprised when Lucky Dice became a big hit with some gamers.

After Lucky Dice was well received, we started thinking about including more mini games in future Dice Hate Me Games releases. Lucky Bean became the running joke as VivaJava's mini game. You'll notice that there is no official mention of a "Lucky Bean" mini game in the VivaJava box; that's because "Lucky Bean" is one of the game variants. Can you guess which one?

The original design for the Lucky Bean mini game is still in Cherilyn's archives. Maybe if you all throw some hints her way she'll release the rules. whistle

Incidentally, for those of you who have yet to discover the addiction of Lucky Dice, you can download the app for iOS for free: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lucky-dice-a-carnival-game/i...

Some of you out there may have discerned - by my putting three syllables in the word "get" - that I (Chris) am Southern. And proud. Just about everyone else involved with Dice Hate Me Games - Cherilyn, TC Petty III, Darrel Louder, Jason Kotarski - is decidedly un-Southern. And, so, I thought it would be a nice touch to create an homage to that famous dividing line between North and South as a special Blend. The art influence is grounded squarely in the history of the Mason-Dixon line - the "M" with a crown is the seal of Maryland's founding Calvert family, and was placed on one side of a long series of "crownstones" that marked the original line between Pennsylvania and Maryland. This one is pure Darrell Louder - he sure did his homework!

Nite Owl, along with Samba Mama, are the oldest Blends in the VivaJava stable; they have remained on the list of names since the very beginning, surviving every revision and edit. Nite Owl is our tribute to the hardcore gamer - those that say "want to learn Troyes?" at 4 a.m. at a convention. The art influence is a throwback to old coffee, tea and beer posters of the 30s, 40s and 50s, back when Guinness had its toucan, Hamm's had its bear and just about every other brand had a zoo full of animals hawking their products.

Nite Owl also has the distinction of being the second Blend Slate art created for the game. The first? Morning Call.

No good coffee company worth its salt would go without a special holiday blend, and VivaJava CoffeeCo is no exception. The choice for the VivaJava holiday blend was pretty easy - since Cherilyn was a professional ballerina for many years and now teaches ballet, she's been involved with more Nutracker performances than she can recount. This is our tribute to that timeless classic - with just a hint of a dark twist (it's a dark roast). You should have seen the early designs; that nutcracker may have kept you up at night.

From the very beginning, we wanted VivaJava's art style to be classically retro - conjuring up the feel of many art movements of the early 20th century. One of those art influences is the WWII propaganda posters of the US and Russia. While it was certainly a time of upheaval for the world, the era did provide us with some of the most endearing and revolutionary pieces of graphic design. With Red Star, we wanted to evoke a little bit of that era, but also present a blend that we figured the VivaJava CoffeeCo might brand and market as "a revolution in flavor from the Far East."

Samba Mama is, officially, my favorite Blend in VivaJava. It also happens to be the very first name and design I came up with. Soon after I played the game with TC at Origins 2011, I began to think about the art style and what we could do with the Blend Slates if we signed the game. Immediately, out of nowhere, Samba Mama popped into my head and she's been there ever since, proving that some design simply isn't made - it's born.

As an aside, the art influences for Samba Mama came directly from old Cuban travel and food import posters of the 1950s. I also channeled a bit of Carmen Miranda and Miss Chiquita, but decided to leave the fruit hat out of the picture.

We really enjoy Easter Eggs in games, and we wanted to create a sort of Dice Hate Me Games "universe" in which all of our games exist so we could populate each with references to other titles. For the curious, Stillwell's is the name of the coffee shack in Take the Bait that determines turn order - the spot where all fishermen meet each morning of the three-day tournament. Stillwell's - and Lake Wanapulachit - pop up again as one of the Truck Stops in The Great Heartland Hauling Co. The art influence is an homage to Kwanchai Moriya's wonderful cover art for Take the Bait.

This Blend is an homage to TC Petty III's uniquely uncategorizable biplane-racing fisticuffs game, Good Ol' Punchin' Planes. This Slate was designed by Darrell Louder, and he did his darndest to channel the pre-WWI atmosphere of GOPP while sticking closely to the Deco/propaganda/food service retro poster feel of the other Blend Slates.

If you haven't tried out Good Ol' Punchin' Planes, you really should - if you can find a copy. It's weirdly engrossing. Send TC a geekmail - maybe he can hook you up!

Ok, so coffee doesn't really grow too well in Italy, but those Italians sure know to to drink it - and roast it. Ciao Bella is our tribute to those great Italian blends that are a staple of many a coffee company. As for the art influence, it's all about the Vespa; you'd be amazed at how many vintage travel and food posters channel its classic shape.
