I agree - I bought this because the theme appealed but the theme doesnt really show through much. Decent game though.

I don't think this one really fits in the steampunk genre. I don't think there is any steam, and there definitely isn't any punk

Acually it's not that bad. The expectations where high, because of the great components, that's why it was a bit of a disappointment and got rated pretty low.
The rules are very badly organised though.

20,000 Leagues is the OG steampunk! The Nautilus runs on steam power, albeit through a Deus Ex Machina engine that is nuclear in allusion.

There is muscle, mad science, giant squids and one crazy-ass captain bent on punishing the evil-doers of the world.

Steampunk.

I don't think that the steampunkness of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was questioned. It's that this game doesn't really have anything to do with that story or Captain Nemo. From what I gather, it's about building an undersea base and gathering resources from the ocean floor. If were actually about Nemo, I would have bought it already. Hey, that gives me an idea, there really should be a Nemo microbadge.

This game uses "Nautilus" because, much like an Octopus's Garden, it is under the sea. Yeah OK the currency is called Nemos, but really it has nothing to do with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. They have sonar and one of the aims of the game is to improve your various technologies, none of this relishing in the age of steam stuff.

I quite like the game, but it really takes 30-60 minutes longer than it should.

Well, I think this is a pretty good game. You have to balance building bases with sending subs out to find things, and each has an influence on your victory conditions. To me, it has a nice feel and a good theme, and good game play. Maybe it takes a while, but there's a factor of the unknown that may make things go a tad slower than a game where exploration isn't involved. Just a thought. Pretty decent game, really.

Just wanted to add the game's description here:

"California: 1849

Where the mayors of stupidly rich Gold Rush towns can squander the resources of their citizens on pretty much whatever they want.

This month, it's a race to the Moon.

Will it work? Probably not. The real goal is to earn enough votes to become governor. But it seems the best way to impress your pioneering constituents is by doing something grotesquely stupid and dangerous, like blasting them into space.

It's one false step for Mankind, one giant leap for you."

Having played both once, I will say that the main reason to buy this game is right on the cover: Good Lord but the first game is long. The expansion makes it at least -playable-. I didn't expect 4 hours from a CAG the first time I played it, and the expansion helps.

Yes a was very surprised how long the first game took. I don't think people hated it, but everyone was more then ready for it to end. I think the length is the reason we've never played it again. We will play long games, but this one really wasn't worth the length.

A very little-known, GDW game from 1989, based on the RPG Space 1889, in which a group of intrepid adventurers have to rescue slaves and gather loot from the lair of the Beastmen...the native Martians. Modular board, special powers. Not highly rated, but it fits the list. Supposedly a luck/dice fest but fun. Haven't played it yet.

An old SPI adventure game based in the Edgar Rice Burroughs version of Mars, "Barsoom." John Carter is a Civil War Captain transported there via some weird astral portal in 1866. Supposedly there is a movie about this in the works, but latest word is it's been delayed. Haven't played this yet, either but I got some of the books to pass on with the game to my son when he's old enough...may be a while if the box cover is any indication (haha).

The cover of the game and the books show the character FAR more heavily dressed than they are in the actual books. In the books, the characters run around nude with the exception of harnasses used to hold their (many) weapons. That said, the books are about as chaste as you can get. They're all about romantic love and, well, killing everyone who gets between the main character and the woman he loves. Okay, that's a bit simplistic, but the books are plenty of fun. You can safely turn your son loose with them as soon as he able to read them.

I have played it. It plays very well and the interaction between the pre-dreadnoughts and the flyers is very interesting. Think slow moving bombing run and you get the idea. Worth getting the PDF and some 1/1000 ships to play it. BTW, it does paly very well as a straight historical game.

We play this game in more of the pulp genre. The vagarities of the rules actually make it very versatile...anytime from Civil War to late 30's/early 40's. I've played in a pulpish "Raid on Dr. Zombie's Island" campaign and have also been in some Lovecraftian Chthulu-based games, too. It isn't too much of a stretch from pulp to steampunk.

WOTW fans may enjoy the miniatures game "A Fistful of Tripods".

The rules are out there on the interwebs, seek and you shall find.

There are several games basedon the Jules Verne steampunk novel(steamships, steam trains and steaming elephants!!)

This is the latest game, highly rated and gives the flavour of going round the world up against tight deadlines

Yep that was 12 Power Grid maps back to back over two days. Worth doing, but possibly not in such a concentrated burst.

So it was fun, but you don't want to play again?

I've been eyeing this game up as a potential purchase, so I'm curious if you could elaborate.

17. Board Game: Deadlands: Doomtown [Average Rating:7.24 Overall Rank:702]

The Deadlands franchise, in the incarnation here that I'm most familiar with, contains a few steampunkish factions. My favorite, the Collegium, is an outfit built around dudes with the Mad Scientist trait. Mad Scientists can use their turns to build Gadgets. Some gadgets are weapons (Ray Gun, Gatling Pistol, Dynamite Luancher), some are vehicles, and some are just plain useful (Ghost Rock Detector, SUZY209). The Collegium can win the game just by building enough difficult gadgets, and the Union Army's mysterious Agency is known to employ the talents of several gadgetmen, too.

Best described as High Noon meets H.P. Lovecraft, the game is set in an alternate timeline version of the 1860s-1870s, one where California has been reduced to a Pacific archipelago by to a shaman-induced earthquake. The Civil War is still raging back east. Magic-wielding hucksters stalk the saloons. Undead gunslingers walk the streets. And horrors from beyond lie in wait for any soul brave enough to leave town.

Unfortunately, there is no image for this game that shows any of the gadgets... it's scanner time!

Another new game, whose overall artistic theme is decidedly Steampunkish. I wonder how well this one plays? Better than other time travel themed games?

This game plays across three boards representing three time periods. You build buildings to form 'domains' which score you points. The clockwork art is quite 'Jules Verne' but overall the game's not very steampunk and the theme is just background for a brain-burner of a game...I love it!

I haven't played this, but this definitely seems interesting.

"Iron Stars is a game of space combat in an age of steam and steel. Set in a fictional universe based loosely on the writings of H. G. Wells and other fantasists, it provides a back story and ship designs from an alternate history in which the Martian Invasion actually happened, the ether is all-pervasive, and Cavorite is a reality."

It's not completely devoid of theme, but what little there is is "WWIIpunk" rather than steampunk.

I have this game and it's more in the line of Axis & Allies and WWIV, but the style is set more of a weird WWII genera like West Wind Productions SOTR Secrets of the Third Reich, Doomsday 1949, Incursion, or AE and Gear Krieg. These Weird WWII games seem to have zombies and vampires, WWII tech mixed with sci-fi mechs and tech in them to distinguish from a steampunk style universe which is more Victorian to pre WWII tech with fantasy mixed in and of corse the steam factor.

If you check out the new Dust Tactical game, it has the figs set similar to the AT-43 game from Rackham, so should be a similar gameplay. I like this game and the DUST universe, but for me this is not a steampunk game.

Ao the verdict seems to be that Steampunk makes an amazing idea for some art but a horrible idea for a boardgame. So I guess I should continuing designing mine. Whoo! Its always good to realize nobody invented your idea yet. I think Steampunk is right for teh creation of an exciting strategy boardgame that actually incoporates the theme to a greater degree than MRP (which I love but doesnt really get the them across well enough).

Great list you saved me a lot of work!
