One of the things that I've been looking forward to for a long time was playing games with my kids. I've been blessed with three wonderful kids (9, 7 and 5) and watching them grow up has been great.

I've been told that you should expect great things from your kids. If you do, they will surprise you what they can do.

A few years ago I tried to play a game with my then 7 year old son and I've been shocked as to what he's been able to do with games. Since then, it's been a great two years.

Here are a few of my favorite experiences with my kids playing games.

For each item:
-What was the age of your child when you first played this game with them?
-What do you remember specifically about the gaming experience?
-Out of 5 stars, how would you rate the game to play with kids?

If interested, here's a geeklist that documents this from when I was a kid: Games that remind you of your childhood

Of course this has to be #1.

Age:7 years old
Memory:This was the first game that I played with my son. I was shocked at how fast he picked up the game. What impressed me more, though, was how well he remembered the rules on the second game without explanation. Awesome.
Rating for kids: You may need to get a card holder. Also, remembering the locations of the routes can be a challenge.

Age:8 years old for my son, 6 years old for my daughter
Memory:This was the first "complex" game that I played with my daughter, who was six at the time. She loved the theme of the animals, and she actually picked up the game really quickly. We've played it quite a few times and she loves it.
Rating for kids: Some of the rules can be a little complex, but my kids surprised me and picked it up quickly.

Memory:This was the first non roll and move game I played with my 5 year old. He was hilarious during it. He loved to play. I'd say 5 was a little young, but he had a blast.
Memory #2:What I found out about my daughter during this game was her fantastic memory. Whenever a card turned over that was off the board, she didn't even have to look to see if it was gone. She knew right away. It was fantastic to see and amazed me!
Rating for kids: This is ideal for young kids. It takes a little explanation, but it works out great for the kids.

EDIT: Today, my five year old was looking for something to do. I needed a few minutes to finish something up and he hadn't played any electronics all day, so I offered him my iPhone.

He turned it down and pulled this game out. How could I resist!

Memory:My son plays this game really, really well. This was the first game when I really saw his strategic thinking come through. His ability to think five steps ahead became apparent during the first few plays of this.
Rating for kids: You will need to help the kids out with strategy, but it is a fun theme for them.

Memory:This was the first game that my son talked about in the car, over and over again. He talked about what strategies he was anxious to try. "Dad, next time I'm going to get lobster and shrimp and see if I can beat you that way." Of course, he beat me the first five times we played this. Amazing.
Rating for kids: This isn't easy for kids to understand if they haven't played other "complex" games first. But the theme can really draw them in if they are into fishing.

I know, I know. Bt when my 8yo and I play 2 player that final draw that happens 80% of the time where one of us has the old maid and a card and the other has the match is pure hilarity. We played 10 straight games on Sunday prior to my next entry.

AKA: that panda game

My daughter (7) doesn't live with me and so doesn't get the opportunity to play many games, especially not with adults.
On one of the visits I gave her the choice of going to a games day and playing some games with mummy and friends, or we could have a mummy-daughter day and go swimming... make-up etc etc.
She chose gaming .
She specifically asked for the panda game I had on the shelf and so takenoko in hand we went to the games day.

She picked up the rules really quickly including the irrigation which I thought she might struggle with.
She played all day and by the end of the day she had developed her own strategy... namely looking weak by not playing any objective cards and then bam plays her whole hand.
She won quite a few of the games too and the adults in the group aren't know for pulling their punches!

Rating: top marks for this one.... I have even been told I have to bring it home for Christmas so we can play!

This one got played because the box is pretty!

Whilst the daughter (7) did understand the basics of the game and understood how to attack/go into decline etc, some of the strategy was a little lost on her, i.e. she picked races based upon how pretty they were, so pixies mostly.
She also struggled to read the board and know who to attack but overall I think she enjoyed.

Rating: basic mechanics are fine but some of the strategy is lost on this one.. will try again when she is a bit older.

I can't believe I forgot this one on the first pass at this list.

Age:7 years old
Memory:My son thought this was such a cool game. He called it "Dominon" for two years, which drove me nuts initially. While not one of my favorites, we really enjoyed playing it together and still occasionally take it out. He used to think that this "was the best game in the world." While that's been taken over by Fleet (for now), we still enjoy it.
Rating for kids: Kids have to be pretty good readers to play this. Other than that, it is wonderful.

This was bought specifically with the daughter in mind.
Unfortunately she finds this too difficult and keeps hurting her fingers when trying to flick the car along the track.
Continually flipping the car over or off the track just lead to frustration so this one got put away.

Age:5 years old (keep reading)
Memory:Like many of us, I'm particular about how my games are handled. I want them to be taken care of. However, one time I came home and my son (who is a train nut) had this all over the kitchen table with what appeared to be some pretty nice routes set up. He used the locomotives from this game and the passenger cars from Ticket to Ride. "I couldn't resist," said my wife, who said it kept him busy for three hours. This phenomena repeated itself over and over again. While we still haven't ever played this game (too complex for most of the kids), I look at this as being respoinsibile to starting his interest in games.
Rating for kids: This game is wonderful to "play" with, but don't expect to get any game plays in until they are 9-10 years old.

This was cheap in the works and so I picked up a copy.

The strong push-your-luck factor keeps my daughter entertained and the food chain aspect helps her to learn.
