Ideally this list will include every title released at Spiel 2006, organized by rating average so that the cream will rocket to the top, knocking aside all the lesser games on their way up.

Much of the initial info on this list comes from the good folks at Boardgamenews.com. Add new games to the list as they're announced and added to BGG, and please include the designer and publisher at a minimum.

Advance your civilization from building pyramids to flying in space (preferably not in pyramids since they're not aerodynamic).

You do have to launch the pyramids, though, unless you build them while in orbit -- and the lack of progress on International Space Station probably hasn't been too inspirational.

If you are actually hoping to have this list accurately rate the NEW games from Essen, then this entry should be stricken as what is being released is a newer version of Princes of Florence, and I would expect that game should have its own listing and own set of ratings, just as has been done for the umpteen versions of Carcassone, Settlers, Age of Steam, and Ticket to Ride, etc.

Ted Alspach's second AoS map pair will debut at Essen. This time around the theme is unorthodox to say the least, though: one map features a "Disco Inferno" while the other sees the players delivering souls from hell to heaven.

Interesting new mechanisms in each of these...

While I'm not a big fan of Wallenstein, the initial pictures of the board on this one makes it look like an improvement...due to water routes there aren't nearly as many corners to hide in, which means that you can attack areas more easily, and there should be more conflict between the players.

This is definitely a good thing.

The first map pair released by JC Lawrence on Ted Alspach's Bezier Games label is also going to be there.

The Sun and London both have some new wrinkles, London in terms of track building costs, and the Sun in the way that players build the map before playing, create cities by track placement, and can move cities around during the course of play via urbanization.

No promo figures that I saw, but Richard Borg was on hand to explain the game and answer questions. Days of Wonder had both English and German demo copies on hand, and the game should be for sale in a few weeks. I liked my one playing, although there's a lot of details to remember about movement, battle dice, lore use, and so on. I would imagine the scenario book starts easy, then adds in more material, but I didn't fly thousands of miles to read a scenario book!

Well, Rick T has just odne a quick review of this on BoardGameNews. It sounds good. A sort of card passing element which remided me of Hearts, some placement based on cards (a bit Pompeji-ish) and a bidd to avoid rats (a bit like High Society). Not a lot new in Euros these days! But, having said that, the game looks good and sounds fun.

I see that you still throw away more waste plastic than you are left with in playing figures. I had it weighed some time ago; I believe the ratio was 40 grams of playing figures, and 90 grams waste. There was a rumour of a dimension error in the production - they could have made up for that with this expansion, adding the pieces for 1-4 players with it. But be honest, is this game so hot that you would want it to play with 5 or 6?

note: I thought it was a bit of a waste to have a game about a cathederal where you don't really do anything at the cathederal. The wooden cathederal model was just a picture-esc round marker, which I thought was a bit pointless really.

This was my favorite game of many good games (Leonardo Da Vinci, Hermagor, Mr. Jack, Ystaphan). It really does have a Caylus feel to it but the theme oozes very nicely from the beautifully produced game. This one will have legs...

Supposedly a family game about acquiring goods and building store fronts, but already a couple of nice ratings on the Geek.

I'm not sure it's a family game. The rules are clear and it plays quickly, but there might be too much happening for a family game. I like it.

A game that I want to try. I must say though, that the "originality" of the dice rolling mechanism seems slightly over-done. It seems like a cousin of what went on in Tonga Bonga, to me.

The R&D version will match the first edition of Reef Encounter, while What's Your Game? and Z-Man Games will likely publish a version that matches the graphics of the current edition.

Does anyone have confirmation of if and when this will be published for the second edition?

I believe Richard has said previously that the second edition is not completely confirmed yet, so no, no date has been set.

Not much to be concerned about though, he sounded rather confident that the expansion will be picked up, it's just a matter of when.

All of the copies of Reef Encounters of the Second Kind! and Fowl Play! have now (end of August 2006) been pre-ordered.

Some copies have been ordered by on-line retailers and you may be able to secure a copy through them if you are still looking for a copy.

I'm really hoping/looking forward to Z-Man publishing a version of this expansion that matches the artwork for the second edition, for those of us unable to get a copy of the first edition. Please Z-man, please!

Yay! This fine limited-edition game, in which one player is Jack the Ripper and the other tries to deduce his identity among the eight characters on the board, is now being released in a larger print run by Hurrican. No word on a North American distributor yet, but copies will be at Essen.

Previously released in a small print-run by 3-Hirn Verlag, but newly presented at Essen by Clemens Gerhards as a deluxe wooden version.

Inspired by Hex, the famous Piet Hein/John Nash connection game, but introducing a majority control element as players no longer connect sides by a string of playing stones, but instead try to make a chain of majorities in the cells that are surrounded by placing points. It's a chain of controlled cells that needs to link 2 sides of the board to trigger a win, not one made by stones.

This expansion is no longer listed in the coming releases from Kosmos. Guess folks have finally stopped buying Settlers products.

You guess wrong. They've incorporated those cards into the standard set, as it says on their website:

"Mit neuem Themenset "Künstler und Wohltäter"

(With new topic set “artist and benefactor”!)

The expansion was published as part of the special edition which contains the basic game with updated card text and this expansion.

The standalone expansion which is mentioned here was pushed back to a release date of spring 2007.

There were reports that the cards of the special edition would more easily bend than the previous editions (which is bad). Maybe they fix that for this standalone expansion and need more time for that...

Would you consider sorting by average rating instead of rank? As only one of the games on the list currently is ranked (and as most games probably won't be ranked before Essen if they are released at Essen), this would make more sense from a shopping list perspective.

wow, there are a lot of games here that have great potential. I am much more interested about these games than I was about the ones that have been released in the past 2 years. It is great to see that board game designers haven't run out of new and exciting ideas.

Sjap, the War on Terror guys (aka TerrorBull Games) were supposed to have a booth at Spiel, but in early October Merz Verlag decided against it. War on Terror was previously included on this list, but one of the TerrorBull guys wrote and asked to have the game removed after they were told not to show up.

Hmm, I was going to send you to the WoT blog that tells the story about the ouster, but I see that you already know all about it. You were one of the ones wearing shirts that protested the removal of War on Terror from the show. Good idea.
