and I were locked in our 2nd full game of this gem. He's the one that taught me the game. He upgraded to a Beta version of VASSAL and it messed up the board on my end. We ended up stopping the game because it was just too hard to deal with.

After I started noticing similar mess-ups on various games and posted a question about it, I found out that the old Beta version of VASSAL (3.2) is out there for downloading and most of my VASSAL opponents had upgraded, so I did too.

On a whim, I tried out Kevin's old file, and it worked. I dropped him a line to see if he wanted to resume, so that game is back on.

My last update on this game says that we "are in the end of 1942. Somehow, someway, my little Dutch regiment held on to the Northern Sumatra oil field. I had my units in position for the inevitable fall of the Dutch East Indies, but it didn't happen on turn 3.

We went into turn 4 and my submarines came through, sinking some cargo transports and cutting down on his troop transport ability as well. This hasn't been good enough, though. The public back home is clamoring. They have bought all these war bonds and they want to see some return on their investment: they want me to start taking the war TO the Japanese, rather than try to hold on to what we got. The bad news for me was that Rommel gave Monty a butt-kicking in North Africa, so FDR and Churchill delayed my reinforcements.

Kevin turned around and invaded Midway, though the move perplexes me, since it out of supply range, so his units will die from attrition before he destroys any of my political will."

I'm happy to be playing this again as it may be my very favorite game. It truly is a special.

Was looking for an opponent on the VASSAL request line. I usually let awhile go by and let others jump in. Half the month had gone by. I usually play this (poorly, I might add) about once a year. Because of that, I don't memorize the cards and because of that, I prefer to play less experienced players. So I figured "Why not?" It's been about 18 months. So here we are. I am the Soviets. It's never a good idea to let me the Russians in anything. I took some classes in college and I work with a dude who grew up there, so he teaches me many phrases I never learned in school. It helps me get into the spirit of things. arrrh

Soloed the "Torbung" BT scenario.
A fine scenario which gives you a choice in regards to how you use the "On the move" orders. You can either move units or roll for reinforcements. A fun twist which gave the Japanes an artillery unit behind enemy lines, and also gave the British side n artillery unit, a tank and an infantry unit.

The British side has Gurkhas on the board at start and they roll +1 die in Close Assault which goes along way to mitigating the Japanese Banzai ability in this scenario, since the British side is dug in and just waiting for the Japanese.

It ended 7-2 for the British, but the British had some units severly reduced, so it felt closer than the result shows.

The Bonus scenario booklet has a few cool looking scenarios that uses reinforcements in different ways and some that uses the Exit rules in new ways. Well worth the postage I paid for it.

I soloed my first scenario of "Escape From Velikiye Luki", the sixth scenario of "Squad Leader" and the last of the front east section. Although it uses the four maps of the box, it is a very small scenario, especially compared to the previous "Hill 621".

3 from 5 german squads must cross the four maps without being shot by russians squads. The germans are helped by the night rules, introduced by this scenario. At first, these rules are not very intuitive, and this is worsened by the special rules of this scenario which won't let the leaderless russian squads moves except fo peculiar situations. It leaves you a bit confused about who sees what, who can/may shoot, who may remain cancealed... But, as there are fews squads, you still manage to get through the turns.

The german must choose if he remains concealed while moving (this gives him a good cover, but prevents him from reducing the russian firepower) or atacks the russian, hoping to kill the very few and very important russian leaders. My germans choose to be rather offensive... and they lost three squads out of five at the fourth turn. So they lost... It seems quite difficult from the germans to win...

Played the first succession war scenario for the first time, we had always done the later war senario. It was fun, when we called it night, Davion had taken over Liao and was pushing into Marik with the highest Tech level possible. Kurita was two provences into my Steiner relm, and had he right cards in his had to put me in a workd of hurt! It was different experience for us becuse jump ships are destroyed not captured. Another difference is that mercenaries are bid for at the start of each players turn. We also saw larger unit stacks on map than we had seen in the later senario. I am not sure if I like one senario better than the other, the game is fun with either one. I think it might be fun to set up a system to start the next war at boarders of the last, just a thought.

I'm happy to say that I lasted a whole game (8 turns, if I recall correctly) and the final margin of victory was only a few points. I don't think the game was that close but I ducked and covered pretty well.

A great game that I look forward to playing again.

This is a great game, even when getting spanked this is good fun. Insert comment here.

New game is against everyone's friend

N/A

Jim has the axis and his coastal shipping has been amazing. It looked as if his initial Italian push was going to go all the way to Alexandria. The only chink in his armor to this point, was underestimating how far 30 mp's is on that map. LRDG snuck into Benghazi and is going to play hell letting him get it back.

This is how nice Jim is. Before the game started, I mentioned how in my last game O'Connor died on turn 3. I asked if he wouldn't mind playing with an optional rule on removing the leaders. He pleasantly agreed to the one that O'Connor's removal roll is changed from 3 to 4, he returns the next turn as a reinforcement just like Rommel. This option also stops the LRDG's raid on Rommel roll. Turn 1 O'Connor roll was snake eyes, turn two's I believe it was a 3. Thanks again, Jim.

On the replacements I rolled huge the first two turns and couldn't use everything I recieved. Turn 3, you guessed it, the a big removal. At least O'Connor managed to make it on the map for a turn. Looks like the Allied line may have managed to stabilize just west of Mersa Matruh.

Good times.

On to scenario C, where Egypt has fallen to the Crusading horde.

Unfortunately while the crusaders where pillaging Egypt's wealth, my guys found any reason at all to do absolutely nothing. A little rain, small difference of opinion, a mild plague or two any reason at all to sit around and do nothing. I shouldn't have even gotten out of bed that year.

The Armenians decided to go pro-crusader so we have taken it upon ourselves to punish them for their ignorance.

It looks as though my fortunes will have to reverse for me to have a chance in this one.

Holiday week and I was intrigued by the theme. The negatives are the rules could have used a few clarifications and the map's tables are not solo players neck friendly (printed at different angles). The positives are this is a mad ride. The first turn kicked off with a terrorist hunt through the streets of Djibouti , two breathtaking hijacks at sea with the pirates taking the ships, a massive series of airstrikes which killed many militia but also the killing of civilians which appalled the world and finally a bounty placed on the head of the lead Somali warlord who despite fighting a pitch battle against US Airborne forces still managed to hold out in the districts of Bosaso.

Last night, my wife surprised me by agreeing to learn and play a new game. Any game I chose. Wow! What a great Christmas present.

Without hesitation and before she could change her mind, I pulled out Sekigahara: The Unification of Japan, my favorite game of 2011. About 15 minutes of rules explanation later, we were off and running. She played Tokugawa and I played Ishida. Right from the start, my wife played a very aggressive game as she mobilized a large Tokugawa army from Edo and marched it along the highway. Gifu castle fell quickly in the first week, and I was on the defensive.

Throughout the game, I managed to acquire more castles than her but she rushed 3 large armies to converge on Osaka where we had our final, fateful showdown. A poorly timed Loyalty Challenge caused me to lose the battle and retreat, beginning the seige of Osaka. By the end of the fourth week my army didn't have the will to counterattack and Osaka fell to the large Tokugawa host.

My wife has broken my perfect winning streak in this game. The gauntlet has been thrown down.

I had no desire to buy this game, but it was cheap in a sale and resistance was futile . And boy, am I glad I pulled the trigger. I'm playing my second solo scenario now. The game turns out to be fast playing and not overly complex, but with a lot of historical flavor. The excellent play aids make playing easy, the historical notes and design notes are a pleasure to read. A winner and a keeper.

Wow, what a beating. After some time off the game, I had a ftf play of 'Let's roll' as the Jihadists.

First US impulse, he opened with the regime change in Afghanistan. Afghanistan turns out to have fair governance. At the end of turn one, Afghanistan is at good and I lost my recruiting station.
Challenge #2: He's got his prestige at very good and is rolling fives and sixes for his WoI rolls. At the end of the first US impulse in turn two, Pakistan is at good as well. Brrr. Things went further downhill from there...

After a failed jihad in Indonesia (rolls of 5 and 6 with two cells present) and a failed Major Jihad in Central Asia (5, 5, and 6), I lost to an US autowin early in turn four, shaking my head in disbelief.

We ended the evening with a play of Saint Malo which I didn't know before. Nice...

I read Horus Rising: Anniversary Edition before setting the game up(That's $8.99, I'll never get back). I've got the first scenario, Brother against Brother set up. Looks like an interesting, cinematic, thematic war game. I like the asymmetrical victory conditions and the initiative track reminds me of Fighting Formations. However, I am disappointed in the map board, it is too small, doesn't lie flat, the areas aren't labeled with unit limits and it is not the same level of quality as other FFG games like Arkham Horror and Middle Earth Quest; especially since this thing retails for $100. I basically got my copy for free using credit card points but still, annoying.

Introduced Memoir'44 to my neighbour last night.

Chose Vetko Village from the new Memoir '44: Equipment Pack Bonus Scenarios as an intro scenario, since it uses only skitroops and little terrain, and my neighbour is a big Eastern Front/WWII history fan.
First play was 5-1 Russians and second play was 5-4 Germans.

I then showed him all the possible variations in boards and scenarios that Memoir has available, and when I brought out the Sword of Stalingrad battlemap his words were: I want to try that!

He took the Russians and after a long battle the Germans took it 17-11, but he played it very well, and enjoyed the game. A very good scenario and the fight for Mamayev Kurgan raged all the time, but in the end I took control of it as the Germans.

After that he left with a copy of the rulebook for No Retreat! The Russian Front which we took a look at after finishing Memoir. 2013 looks east I guess.

My distinguished wargaming opponent and me played the Battle of Breitenfeld last night. I was the catholic player and I got my ass handed to me. Things looked pretty good at first as my both cavalry wings managed to make important breakthroughs. The Swedish right collapsed in no time and the Swedish player had to move all cavalry from the centre to his right. As a result my left wing suffered heavy casualties. At the same time my right cavalry wing ran into trouble. Two cavalry units managed to blow themselves to the kingdom come. As a result the wing became really vulnerable. On turn five it was completely wiped away and the Swedish cavalry began its flanking manoeuvre. My centre wing had advanced cautiously but soon there was so much dust in the air that some units were left out of command. That caused major problems too. In the end I took Tilly’s historical advice and left the field.

I got a geekmail out of the blue from a kind Italian guy offering a game of CC:E. Well, you can never learn enough and suddenly I'm the Soviets in scen. 3 waiting to get my ass handed to me. I hope it'll hurt because those lessons get remembered best...
