There are a couple of GLs for the GBoH series of games, but no single, comprehensive one. This list will aim to include every addition to the system, in order. I'm doing this because I can. I'm including modules as well, in order to convey a sense of just how much material is out there. Newcomers (and I'm a newcomer, too) should be aware that there are lots of games and scenarios for this system. There are probably several year's worth of gaming here. And the great thing is that you don't have to learn these games separately. Buy into one system, and have plenty of gaming ahead of you: there are a total of 106 scenarios in the first 12 volumes (with modules) in the Great Battles of History series.

I don't own most of these, so hopefully others will write in comments.

- I've begun to link to Shad's VASSAL competitor's geeklist. The link will take you to the specific entry for the module, making it a snap to find online opponents! completed for games which have an entry
- I've started adding links to the living rules, faqs, errata, and so on. completed
- I've begun compiling user comments to these games and will add them to the entries. I'm not going to include every comment, but will try to include both positive and negative ones.

1. Board Game: The Great Battles of Alexander: Deluxe Edition [Average Rating:7.70 Overall Rank:866]

Volume I. Contains Ten battles--there are essentially ten games here, although some are very unbalanced and probably not worth playing. The comment to the Lyginus scenario even says as much. I recommend that the Elite Commander rule not be used, and perhaps Momentum rolls should be discarded as well, if playing ftf, competitively. Otherwise Alexander's overwhelming command superiority can result in some lopsided battles.

Taken with all available modules, there are twenty-six scenarios for this game.

Comments Pro:
"THE ancient game. GBoH series never topped this first offering, which also manages to have a lot of small to medium sized battles which are also great fun. Still, playing Gaugamela or the Granicus is one of the most rewarding experience of this system... and the old Juggernaut module battle is propably the most balanced confrontation ever designed for GBoH. A must own."

"This is what James Dunnigan was talking about when he refered to wargames as "paper time-machines". Not because they precisely duplicate historical events- obviously they don't- but because they make you feel like you are there, or could have been there."

Comments Con:
I don't like the command system: You don't choose deployment and you don't choose what to move or when to move. You only react to what chits leave you done. I dislike too the "hit acumulation" system.

Four more battles for Great Battles of Alexander: battles between Alexander's successors (diadochoi). The word on the street is that these battles feature lots and lots of elephants. Rampaging fun. Out Of Print, but is on the P500 list for a reprint.

Errata and Clarifications, Feb. 2008

Comment Pro:
"Four big battles with lots of elephant means you'll be playing some kind of organized chaos while the elephants rampage all over the place. Three very good battles and one gem battle in there too (don't remember the name, it is the one with the stakes), one of the most balanced and of manageable size too."

Comment Con:
none.

TEN more battles. I think this is considered the best module released for the entire system. Daniel Fournie did his research here, and the essays accompanying each scenario are amazingly well-done. The focus of this module are the battles fought between Carthage and Syracuse over control of Sicily

Errata and Clarifications, Feb. 2008

Comment Pro:
"Quite possibly the best GBoH expansion ever done. Combines well balanced scenarios with a variety of playing times and challenges. Tyrant takes one of the best of the GBoH games makes it even better. If you have Alexander, you really should pick this one up."

"An excellent module for a good system. You get a lot for your money in this, and while there is a certain similarity to most of the battles, that's largely to be expected. The battles are, for the most part, fairly competitively balanced (an improvement over Alexander), and challenging tactically."

Comment Con:
None.

SPQR is Volume II of the Great Battles of History. Contains five Roman-era battles. I've Pledged for Deluxe SPQR but haven't played any of these yet. Currently Out of Print, but on the P500 list--both this edition and Deluxe, which contains the material from all the following SPQR modules (except Raphia). There is also a Deluxe Scenario pack on the P500 list, which makes the scenarios available.

Link to the VASSAL Competitor Directory entry

Comments Pro:
"In my opinion the best of the GBoH series games. The game's scenarios pit qualitatively different foes against each other, usually in the shape of early republican Roman legions against a variety of Macedonian-style phalangial armies (Macedonians, Carthaginians, etc.), which leads to asymmetrically interesting battles."

Comment Con:
"A great combat system and good OOB research, but the command system (a combination of louder megaphones and timewarping for the good leaders) deny it any decent simulation value. One of the most ahistoric renditions of Cannae that one can find in wargames (complete with a silly and ahistoric "layered" legion setup that artificially slows the Romans down). You're very unlikely to see the frequent type of "backhand victory" (such as Cannae) in a system that artificially slows down action on most of the field to focus on the "flying columns" that leap across the field to bring the decision."

Comment:
"If you don't have the original version, this is the one to get for a detailed application of Roman battle tactics in a medium to high complexity war game. Beautiful maps and counters along with all the scenarios you could want. If you like to solo the battles, this is a good game for that as well."

Caesar module #1: Dictator. Covers two battles: Vercellae, 101 B.C., and Chaeronea, 86. Vercellae features Roman legions under the command of Marius fighting against the Cimbrians. Chaeronea was already a historical battlefield in 86. It was here that Philip II defeated Demosthenes and others, subjugating Greece. This, however, is a battle between Sulla (one of the worst men in Roman history) and Mithridates VI. Sulla won, but didn't finish the job: Pompey had to fight him again twenty years later.
