It's a simple enough question -- What's the game of the year for 2012?

(Yes, it's a bit early to be doing this).

One game. Nothing namby-pamby like split votes, although you can list the others that were close.

I consider a game "from 2012" if you think it's relatively new. Sometimes we don't get games the moment the came out.

Besides TDA, the only other 2012 released games I have so far are Agricola: All Creatures Big and Small and Morels. Thunderstone Advance: Towers of Ruin wins since it can play with 1-5 people, and gives me the feeling of an old school dungeon crawl RPG.

Got it a few months ago. I just love this game. Thought I could only love video games. (Don't tell my Black Ops buds I chose to play Ascension rather than jumping on Live a couple times). Favorite part is working out the card combos with what you have. We play with all the expansions.

While I played prototype versions before 2012, I had not played the final version until its release this year. A great "catch-the-feeling-of-an-18xx-game" in an hour.

A very close second Game of the Year for me is Eclipse. Although released in 2011, my first play wasn't until January 2, 2012.

I played a lot of great games this year, but the one that keeps coming back to the table, and the one that has gone over well with my game group is Shadowrift. I'm thankful for that because my regular group doesn't really like co-op games. It's not a perfect game, but it is a fun one.

I also really Android: Netrunner and Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island, but they are more limited: the first is just for two, and you need a partner who knows the rules, and the latter is amazing, but a bit rules heavy.

This is my favorite game of 2012. Yes it really is agricola light, but it still is full of tension and difficult choices. And it is beautifull. I played this game twice in a hotel lobby and because of the looks both times other guests asked what game it was. I also like the expansion.

A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

Can´t believe this isn´t yet on this list - perhaps you all got it last year. But this is my gaming highlight of the year, after missing on the early hype, I didn´t bought it in Essen, after reading some reviews my curiosity was reignited. Bought it as an impulse by (to save the shipping) in June and I wish I could play it every weekend. It´s surprisingly good with two players and it´s epic with 4 or more. Streamlined gameplay with enough luck in tile draw and combat to be never boring. With the expansion I would say this one goes to eleven.

Runner up: Netrunner - one of my Secret Santa gifts and I´m already loving it after two plays.

I haven't completely made up my mind yet, but along with X-Wing Minis, The Manhattan Project is one of my front-runners.

It looks fantastic, has a great and unique theme, has a really solid euro-style worker-placement core, but then also finds a few cool ways to bring in some really nasty direct-conflict into the mix as well. Minion Games really hit this one out of the park, and I figure I'll be playing it for a long time to come.

If you want to hear more of what I think about it, you can check out my review as well!

Like Lords of Waterdeep, Spartacus is easy to learn, streamlined, and (dare I say?) elegant. But the similarities end there. If you like back-stabbing, betting on combat, and decapitating your enemies, this game is for you. Ameritrash with a Euro sheen.

Edited for typo.

This year most if not all of my acquisitions have been games from GMT Great Battle of History series, which I play quite often.

However I wanted to mention PoN for the following reasons:

1-First time ever I win a game on a BGG contest.

2-The game quality is second to none, except maybe for the hostages and treasure chests which are not bad, but made of a thinner cardboard. But overall, the game is appealing to the eyes and its graphic design excellent: the board is big and never gets cluttered; the colors and artwork are superb too and cover the topic/period in an excellent way.

3-In regards to the game mechanics, these are flawless: the turn sequence and the way the game evolves is a proof it was thoroughly tested before publishing. Although this game is in the Euro arena(and admit it, am not an Euros fan) this game provides fun and continuous interaction between the players. The game is not boring and keeps you 'engaged' once it begins.

Happy Holidays to everyone!!!

Surprised to see this game not mentioned yet. Winner of two major Game of the Year Awards in Germany, also the GAMES magazine Advanced Strategy Game of the Year. With relatively simple rules and mechanics but different paths to victory plus the unique "dying" mechanism, the game has broad appeal to both hard-core and casual gamers alike. It has been the most played game in my collection since picking it up in early 2012. Still today, even with a solid US distributor, it is still hard to get copies as it's constantly listed as "sold out."

As I'm a new convert to the cardboard as of this summer, my favorite games this year were mostly old classics I was catching up on: Lord of the Rings, Acquire, Carcassonne, and other staples. As for games that came out in the last year or so, well, a gaming buddy introduced me to this one recently, and it's dragging me dangerously close to grognard territory. Other than a few confusing hedgerow rules, the game is super-easy to pick up even for a noob like me. Highly recommended, even for non-wargamers.

Runners up: 1812: The Invasion of Canada, Eminent Domain, Discworld: Ankh-Morpork

I know some of the world got this one in 2011 but I am counting it since it wasn't widely available in the US until this year.

I like the variable ways to score and the fun manacala mechanic of selecting actions. For as much as is going on, it is pretty easy to teach and understand.

This is it, hands down. I came to board games as a miniature gamer and Its still a passion for me. Dungeon Command's combat mechanics are fantastic and the starting boxes are really well done. Every army has a unique feel to it that just couldn't be done with dice unless it was bogged down by reams of stat sheets and long winded rules. For this 20+ year mini gamer it was a breath of fresh air.

Yep, I know it came out last year. But I didn't get a chance to play it until this year and its my favorite new game that I played this year. Tight resources, jockeying for position to be able to do the action you want to do when you want to do it, and positioning yourself to avoid fights whenever possible to conserve resources and get extra actions. A brain burning knife shiv your opponent in the back fest and it is awesome.

I hate picking just one game, but here it is!

I think this game scales great and has that epic space opera kind of thing going on. Once all the players understand the rules it plays smooth.

I especially like how the tech research is open - no having to research this, then this to get that. I also like how the discounts work.

I just have to remember to use the WMD more (or, start using them to begin with).

I played many games from this year's crop. Heavy, light, medium...playtested, unplaytested, you name it. And it's been a pretty good year for them. But this little gem stands out for being a really cool innovation into the trick taking genre.

Will you be able to ever buy it? Who knows! Perhaps someone will release a version with dinosaurs...
