THIS GEEKLIST IS NO LONGER ACTIVE. Please go to the active version here

Please subscribe to this list to be the FIRST to learn about tournament updates for Android: Netrunner tournaments in Berkeley.

My little introduction:

Do not be put off by the term 'Living Card Game'. Android: Netrunner is perfectly playable with just the base set (without worrying about building your own deck at all), and shines as a game where your in-game play truly matters, instead of taking a backseat to what you sprinkled into your deck. And this is one of the most thematic card games out there, with each side playing completely differently from the other and functioning as separate halves to understanding the whole experience.

Designed by Richard Garfield in the '90s and often lauded as the best game he's ever designed (yes, including Magic: The Gathering! He's also designed King of Tokyo & RoboRally), this game has been brought back in Fantasy Flight Games' Living Card Game format, which offers the customization options for your deck without making you waste money on random-card booster packs. The expansion packs are released every month, but only add a few cards each time, and only 1 expansion pack has been released right now (Dec '12), which also means it's the best possible time to get into this game (instead of being intimidated by a large card-pool)!

The tournaments are 3 to 4 rounds of Swiss, no knock-out or final. Official tournament rules will be followed. Each round is allotted 75 minutes, and you're expected to complete 2 games in that time with your opponent, so each of you gets to play as both Runner and Corporation in each round. Please check individual events for more details like allowed card sets, prize support etc.

Sun, February 24th 2013 @ 12 p.m. @ Games of Berkeley
- Please reply here if you're coming, or RSVP on the Meetup (http://www.meetup.com/berkeleyboardgamers/).

I shall once again be organizing the event. As usual, if you'd like to learn (or just want to hang out), I'll be at GoB at 11am and glad to teach or just shoot the breeze.

Details
$5 entry fee. All proceeds will be used for prize support; Games of Berkeley does not pocket any %.

You may use up to 3 core sets and the cards data packs up to and including Android: Netrunner - Cyber Exodus (Data Pack #3).

65-minute rounds. Seemed to work all right for the last round and better for the length of the event.

3-4 rounds of Swiss, no final

Store credit prizes will be determined based on number of attendees and announced at the start of the event.

As with last time, the top finishers may, in order of finish, forfeit their store credit to acquire some of the contents of the current Game Night Kit (i.e. 3rd-place cannot acquire them if both 1st-place and 2nd-place decide to take the contents), which can only be bought by retailers, and are exclusive to top-performers. We will (finally) have the Season One 2013 Game Night Kit on hand. If you're owed prizes from the last tournament, you can pick them up here or privately.
- $10: deck box
- $5: a set of acrylic credit tokens (four 1s and three 5s), 2 sets, limit 1 per player
- Top player: alt-art Crypsis
- Top 6 finishers + sportsmanship award: alt-art Melange Mining Corp

Note that we will be using the new Tournament Rules v1.2 (see link in header).

It doesn't appear that Opening Moves will be available by the 8th so we are sticking with all cards up to and including Creation and Control unless it is released the week before the Tournament.

75-minute rounds. Shorter if everybody finishes early.
3-4 rounds of Swiss, no final
Finishers in the top quartile can choose to receive Game Night Kit contents or receive store credit instead.

Berkeley tournaments are going bi-monthly, with yours truly picking up the TO duties for this one. Please let me know (reply, geekmail, e-mail, comment, whatever) if you plan to come, so I have an idea of headcount. It helps with the logistics of the tournament.

I know Opening Moves is in the image, as I'm assuming it will be out by then. To clear up any ambiguity, if, and only if, Opening Moves is officially announced as out on FFG's website by 9/28, it will be legal for this tournament. Otherwise this will be another C&C tournament.

Prize Structure

Prizes from the Season 2 pack will be distributed as follows:
1st: Playmat, alt-art Kate, alt-art Scorched Earth
2nd: Alt-art Kate, alt-art Scorched Earth
3rd: 2 alt-art Scorched Earth.
- All other players with equal prestige to 3th place will receive 2 alt-art SE.
- The player with the lowest placing who stayed until the end will receive 1 alt-art SE as a sportsmanship prize.
- As TO, I am reserving 2 SE for myself, in lieu of a prize for placement. My prestige will not count for prizes except for people's SoS.
- All remaining alt-art SE will be given out one-by-one to people below the prestige threshold for receiving two, starting with the top placers in this group. If there are remaining copies after everyone has at least one, the top people from this group will receive a second copy, again based on placement.

Entry fees beyond the minimum to cover the pack will be given out as store credit prizes to the top 3-4 placers; the exact numbers will be determined at the event itself.

If we are out of S2 prizes, we'll open a S1 pack and distribute the prizes in a more straightforward draft, as there are fewer card prizes. Last place will still receive a sportsmanship prize.
EDIT: S2 prize pack confirmed.

Details
$5 entry fee. All proceeds will be used for prize support for the top quartile; Games of Berkeley does not pocket any %.
4-5 rounds of Swiss, no cut to elimination. We will do 5 rounds if 18+ people show up.
75-minute rounds for 4 rounds of Swiss, 65 minutes for a 5 round tournament.

It was a small tournament, but I'm happy to see some new faces; hope we see you all again! I also can't let this pass without comment: fully HALF the participants here ran HB/Shaper. Make of that what you will.

We had a real meager tournament this time, likely due to BART being down, but it was a great showing all around. Shaper/HB stays ever popular, though Brian saw good success with Jinteki. I'm hoping everyone can make it out to Plugged In next week, it was a lot of fun, even if it wound down a little earlier than normal.

Prize support is a little uncertain, but it will either be a Season 1 kit if it gets in, or an exclusive Season 1 kit from 2013 (the one with Melange and Crypsis). Prize structure will be announced once I know for sure, but either way we'll have some great stuff from one S1 pack or another!
