Not sure if this is going to fly but I thought it would be nice if we had a list of AoS maps where players rated the maps by number of players.

Please note the following wonderful lists and posts:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/5009
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/80879
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/108250

10 = Superb, 8=Excellent, 6=Good, 4=Poor, 1=Does not work, NA, Never Played)

Please Rate each Map with the following:
Overall Rating:
2 Players:
3 Players:
4 Players:
5 Players:
6 Players:

Thanks all!! Feel free to add maps I have missed!

2: With my variant, 8
3: not interested
4: 9
5: 7
6: played once with 6, will never play again: Rate 2. Far too tactical.

Note: My preference is for "map/# of player combos" that allow you to do long-term planning with a reasonable expectation that it is worthwhile to do so, but still provide a decent level of competition for roles (the auction), builds and cubes. This is a tough balance to achieve. I've got a pretty clear vision for the optimal number of players for each map I've played. I believe that each map has a clear sweet spot. Finding it is part of the fun.

With too many players on a given map, the game becomes far too tactical and loses the very thing that makes AoS unique: That it is not a short-term optimization game.

Pet peeves: (1) Maps on which you run out of places to build before the game ends e.g. France with 4p). (2) Maps touted for low player counts that make the auction irrelevant by failing to adjust the role selections (e.g. France again and Scotland without my variant) (3) Maps that introduce new rules that exacerbate a runaway leader (Ireland, Scandinavia). (4) Map that are so expensive to build on that all players end up issuing all shares available, or nearly so, thus taking the slum lord strategy off the table.

Comments: I have only had one chance to play this, but it went well. It seemed like a decent map for new players because of the fairly small twists in the rules, but that at least added a bit of flavor to the play.

I quite like it. A nice easy map, plenty of opportunity to grab a route into London. No obvious choke points so players generally feel they're in with a chance.

5 players: 9/10

Maybe a little too open for 4 players.

Again, one must feel the anxiety of bidding and action. If there isn't any threat of someone building near you, causing problems, why bother taking first build or first move? Why bother taking Industrialization or Turn Order? You can wait and take them all next turn..

This is the worst map I have ever played. The problem is extreme imbalance:
- The western half is full of mountains (which cost $5 here) nad the east is relatively flat (a few swamps and rivers (which cost $4).
- Towns start with a cube on them. And more towns are in the east.
- by rule, you have to start on either the east or west edge of the map and are not allowed to build nonconiguous links.

All of these things mean starting in the east is far better than starting in the west.

But on top of that: The east has has cities to start at, the three northern ones are red, the three southern ones are blue. The middle one (St. Louis) is yellow. And Denver (the nearest purple) is centrally located at as well.

Starting in St, Louis allows cheaper building, access to cubes (and places to deliver them) that no other starting point does. If properly played, the player who starts here whould win. You might as well quit after the first bidding round.

I'm so surprised at people's view of Age of Steam. People are voting for less players on these maps... I just can't understand playing a game like this without the pressure. It becomes Ticket to Ride then... where once or twice in the game someone builds where you wanted but "heck, not a big deal, I'll just do that in that WIDE open spot.." Wow. I'm shocked!

I think its a brutal map with some interesting choices. The issue can be the sea move. Once someone grabs it and is able to continue to grab it via the auction (ie they are richer) it seems as if its a foredrawn conclusion that he/she will win. The runaway leader issue is common to many games but with this map it is more pronounced, IMHO.

The Ferry action amplifies the runaway leader problem. Too many other good 3P maps to choose this one instead.

I don't find it particularly brain burning, merely random and overly tactical. Every production phase up to 20 cities on the board may change their colour. Typically almost a half dozen will change colour. Long routes appear and disappear capriciously without reasonable ability to control or predict. What was a nicely strategic game where you can largely plan your end-game track layout and deliveries from the first move is now tactical and reactionary. I fail to see how this is an improvement.

played the Korea map with 3 and loved it. It's very challenging in that your best laid plans may have to totally alter when new goods are placed. The tactical nature of the game is a great puzzle, forces you to be flexible in your plans.

I've only played this map with three, and it was far too easy. The tension of balancing your costs with your profits was gone, and all the players wound up making a ton of money as early as 1/4 of the way into the game.

We talked some about how it would be a good map to introduce people to the game, but then again, it's a bad representation of how tense and tight the game can be.

Marginally better with 3 than with 4. Still not that great a map. Agree that it is too rich and easy. Also, I don't like running out of places to build before the end of the game.

Less cuttroat than it appears--It is almost always better for a player to deliver goods to increase you income than deliver a black cube to drop others.

Beware the cube stealers. The typical pattern is for one player to expensively build to the coal, and then other players to leach the coal for higher profits before they have a chance to deliver it.

with 3: really like to try
with 4: 7

The competition in the 4 Player space is so thick that any map with that sweet spot is up against some tough competition!

With 4 I've found that there are sevearl false promises here... see this session report for a description of them (scroll down to the post-game comments).

Not a bad map, not a great map. Pleasantly unoffensive in rather the same ways that Great Lakes and South of England are.

Comment about playing with 3: Playing thee player on most AoS maps is going to be unsatisfying--not for the map, but for the fact unless Locomotive is modified, it gets taken every turn. By about 5th or 6th turn (i.e. about halfway), most of the players should have 6 trains the breaks down to to whoever finds the most sixes to deliver.

The best three player usually have rules to reduce the effect the effect of Loco (Ireland--allows second upgrade in lieu of a delivery & Japan--makes the +1 temporary).

I would suggest playing any three player game by modifying these rules (or eliminating Loco)

Hi J C
Hope we have the chance to meet your group someday and play Age of Steam. I think it could be very interesting to compare our strategy.

That is sadly unlikely. However I suspect you may get some idea of my sensibilities on track laying by playing AoS:Sun. Given your playing preferences I would specifically recommend playing with 4 players.
