Daughter the Younger has been brought up in a gaming household. Melissa and I have been gamers pretty much our entire lives as has Daughter the Elder.

Daughter the Younger has been interested in games since a very early age. Before her second birthday when watching Daughter the Elder and I play Chess she stood up on a chair and said "Me play Chess too!" and this morning she pointed to our very recently acquired Thurn and Taxis and told Melissa that she wanted to play it. During the ones and twos particularly she has shown a great interest in games, but has lacked that subtle appreciation of them that would stop her from eating them, spilling milk on components or carting the pieces all around the house and leaving them in four or more different rooms. Games that have gone to the Great Gaming Cupboard in the Sky due to Daughter the Younger's love of games include My First UNO, UNO, Tummy Ache and Dwarves and Dice.

We have "played" lots of games with her, but she has mainly played with the pieces, cards or whatever. Quite often she has invented her own games with the components, but not actually played the real game at hand. We have never had any problems with this and she still does it, but as of June 2006 when she was over 3 and quarter years old she actually started playing games properly. It is quite an interesting development to watch unfold.

The games that Daughter the Elder likes to play can be seen at Games that Daughter the Elder will trade bedtime books to play

This list however, is about Daughter the Younger and here is the list of games that she is playing.

I expect this list to grow considerably over the years meeple

Now updated with an Age - x years and y months entry for each game to give people an idea of how old she was when she started playing the game.

Now admittedly there is not a lot to this game. Take a card on your turn and connect it to an existing snake if possible, otherwise start a new snake. However she has the taking turns and snake and pattern recognition down pat - so it counts.

Actually she has been playing this for a while, but I missed it off the list. Not much to it really and given that its target market is presumably preschoolers the production quality of the cards is very low, they are almost paper thin, where as really they should be a solid card to withstand the treatment from little hands.

Color Clowns 02-Jul-2006

A long time favourite of Daughter the Younger's to play with. She has learnt a lot about colours and shapes from this game, but now we play it with the dice. You have rolled a green circle, which piece do you need to make that? She can read the roll and knows that she needs to place the blue circle over the yellow face to make the green circle that she needs.

We have a set much like the pictured one, different colours, but a black 28 piece set (well actually a 27 piece set at the moment until the missing piece shows up). Now I will admit that I haven't bothered to explain end game scoring to her yet, she is still not a big fan of the blanks and we are still playing with open hands but she knows exactly which pieces she can play and where.

Rüsselbande or Piggy-back 22-Jul-2006

One of the best roll and move games around. It is pretty much self balancing if you roll a one you always get to roll again and if you roll a black three and are coming last you get to roll again. It is very difficult for somebody to win just because they got lucky rolls. Plus it has colourful piggies that stack together. Daughter the Younger loves playing with this and has now reached the stage where we play it properly rolling the die in turn and moving our pigs. We usually play with three pigs each and she chooses the colours that each player has, but we still play it properly.

Tief auf Tier 19-Aug-2006 aka The one with animals, or the one with red writing.

An excellent little dexterity game. Daughter the Elder plays this like some kids play Gulo Gulo, i.e. reckless abandon that children can pull off but would end in failure for adults every time. Daughter the Younger hasn't quite mastered that yet as she tends to quite often place pieces perpendicular to the existing pieces which doesn't succeed very often, however she knows what all the results of the die roll are and plays the game as it should be played. Once she stops expirementing with the suboptimal piece placements she will be quite competitive.

Make 'n Break 03-Sep-2006 aka The one in the blue box.

We had this as a demonstration game at the Museum Exhibition and Daughter the Younger of course muscled in. She picked it up straight away. It is interesting that at the moment she is actually better at the cards with the specific colours marked as opposed to the free choice cards.

After dinner tonight she was sitting down playing with some (other) blocks and she told me "I think we should play that other game in the car. The one in the blue box.".

Catch the Match 03-Sep-2006
Another game that she has been helping us demonstrate to people at the museum. With some cards she is very quick and on others she can be a bit slower than her elders, but she certainly knows how to play.

20-Sep-2007 I watched her play this solitaire last night. She went over to the games shelf, retrieved it and set it up on the floor. Every now and again I would hear "Ball", "Plane", "Flower".

This is the copy we have, artwork based on 1940s cartoon characters (very reminiscent of old Warner Bros artwork). It has none of the cute meeples I see pictured with the other edition(s).

She is not as quick as Daughter the Elder, but enjoys naming the animals and making the noises. For some reason she thinks that the Wild card is the "win" card, possibly she picked up that misinterpretation from playing it with Daughter the Elder.

Geistertreppe or Spooky Stairs 10-Sep-2006
Caterpillar games very kindly lent us some of their demo games, this is one we don't own (and don't will probably very soon change to didn't).

You start off as normal (as normal as little meeples with magnetic heads can be) progressing up the stairs. As soon as you roll a ghost then you put a ghost on top of your piece. The next time you roll a ghost you swap any two of the ghosts around. The idea is to remember which ghost your piece is under and get it to the top of the stairs first. She understood the explanation and we were off and playing straight away. The only problem we had was that she tried to short change herself on moves by counting one before moving her ghost to the next stair meeple

This was one of the many games she requested to play tonight. She might have played it with Daughter the Elder before, but I think she has just watched us play. She knew to match colours and numbers, but forgot about the shapes a few times.

01-Oct-2006 - She brought this out and dealt it out for us to play whilst I was finishing breakfast this morning. She now remembers to look for all three attributes.

This is a game that we have been demonstrating at the museum and Daughter the Elder has played with us a few times, but it is now one that Daughter the Younger is requesting. She has picked up pretty much all the rules simply by watching us play, we have not actually taught her!

She hasn't developed any particular strategies for avoiding Sandstorms yet, but since she is only three and half that is not entirely surprising meeple

27-Jan-2007 We now have our own copy of this, and she is fully conversant with the rules and tiles although nobody has specifically taught her.

Based on the aka name I didn't actually figure out what this game was. I thought it might have been Marrakesh or Tier auf Tier until the "not animals" proviso was added. Eventually she took me into the room and pointed onto the shelf to show me. We had this out on demonstration at the Museum all last month. She knows how to make valid moves, although I don't think she would be a match for Neil and Al's little fella yet. Maybe next year though meeple

Actually we have been playing this for a couple of months by now. She knows exactly what to do and she seems to be able to pull off four card draws regularly, yet when I try and push my luck to two card I usually push it too far shake

Recommended for small children, and if you want to speed the game up reduce the number of Gopher Trophies required to win.

Another game that Daughter the Younger taught herself by osmosis. This time by watching Melissa play on BSW.

She knows how to play and only occasionally lets her preference of wanting to put particular colours next to each other get in the way of a good scoring move meeple

We had been playing this for a while without her and she started to demand to play it. Currently her preferred strategy, which seems to be common to three year olds, is to always flip the next tile. Little fingers coupled with a blasé attitude to grab eggs make it interesting to watch and she can and does win this.

At the moment it is about taking turns, counting out the roll and recognising the numbers from one to hundred. We play a house rule that you must announce out aloud the number you land on. Needless to say in the first game with Daughter the Younger and Melissa it was Melissa who came last cool

Oh the picture is of the physical set we play with.

Ostensibly a birthday present, I think we Melissa really got this game because it has bottoms. There is also a slight memory aspect, but its strength is getting the players to describe an animal without saying what it is.

See Melissa's session report for details.

My First UNO - Dora the Explorer 14-Apr-2007
We played this for the first time today, just two player. We played with open hands so I could assist her with what to play. Based on our experiences with Daughter the Elder a few years ago, it will only take or two more open hand sessions. Currently she thinks that she should have a second go when she plays a wild card, but is fine with the +1 and skip (Swiper) cards.

21-Apr-2007 A few more times today, three player with Mummy too this time. For some reason she, Daughter the Younger that is, refuses to say Uno, or Dora! or anything at all to signify her last card.

Ooh a little higher, now a bit to the left, a little more, a little more, just a bit more. Oooh yes, that's the spot!

Angelina Ballerina Match and Dance Memory Game

A little more that your average memory game. When a player successfully gets a match they take the next one of the dance step tokens and must perform the dance position on the token (from one to five) before they are awarded the token and get it to place it on their player mat. The winner is the first player to collect all five tokens.

[Note to self take some photos of the Angelina game]

Barnyard Critters

Yet another game that was purchased after being played on BSW (see it does work as a business model, some people may not play a game that they can play on computer, but others will).

Probably best described as a recognition or matching game where the aim is to find what is missing.

Time after Time 24-May-2009

Yoicks I have been neglecting this GeekList, I will have to trawl through games played records and fill in the gaps from last year.

We first played this on the weekend and she asked for it again straight away and then again the next day. The game really needs to finish when somebody finishes their clock, especially with more than two players as there may not be enough cards for everyone to complete their clocks.

She really likes playing it though, reasonably educational with players arranging cards in time order between 5am and 11pm.
