Constantly I'm searching for gaming stores. New games to buy, and new places to go. But, as hard as I look the hassle of finding a good gaming store is great. Sometimes, too great.

Not anymore my fellow 'geeks. I've decided to create a list -- this list to help people find gaming stores close to them. But, I know of only a few, so with your guys help we'll soon have a store or more for every state. You'll never have to ask the usual question where should I go to buy games in (insert state here).

Keep adding guys! Remember, a store or more for every state. [Edit] And now, so are non-united states friends don't feel left out, add stores in other countries too![/edit]

A format if you wish to follow:

Town and State
Type of Games (Euros, Rpgs, American)
The Store itself (Rating)
Additional Info

[Edit 2] Here you go guys. To make things even easier I've decided to add a list of each of the 50 states and 4 territories. Each time I get a store for each state I'll cross off the name. Go for it guys![/edit 2]

I like your game choice for Wisconsin!

..but I have to disagree with you. Jadeco in Stevens Point is by far the best (and biggest) game store I have ever visited anywhere in the country. In order to give you a perspective on the size, the store now occupies a large percentage of the space that was formerly occupied by the city's largest supermarket (hope that makes sense). It is really big. They have a large selection of War, Euro, Mini, CCG, and other genres. The staff is very friendly and helpful and best of all they have a large gaming area in the back. If any of you are heading up to Central Wisconsin check it out.

PS I am in no way affiliated with the store or getting paid for this :p

In the Milwaukee area, a place that I think is better than the quazi-famous, now gone Napoleon's in the area of board games. To make a long story short, Gordon Lugar's (BoardGameBarrister on the Geek) goal is to do board games, and to do it right. There isn't a game that he will not take off the shelf and show the contents of that box for you, that is, unless he has it already open in his game room or on display on his counter. Further, he is always willing to give a synopsis of said game, or even play a round or two.

(P.S. I also am not getting paid for this, although I wouldn't mind... j/k)

Cary, North Carolina (the 4th point of the Durham-Chapel Hill-Raleigh Triangle)

Strong selection of Euros; some mainstream American & party game fare; I can't comment on the quality or extent of their RPG and miniatures stuff, because I ignore it almost completely, but there's definitely a bunch of it. Also jigsaw puzzles, casino gaming supplies, and other miscellaneous stuff, though haven't noticed any wargames.

They have an awesome boardgaming night on Thursdays, featuring a strong crowd of regulars, a pretty good in-store game library, and discounts! And they've recently moved to a larger location with a bigger & better gameroom.

The carry all sorts of games.
Rating: 10

Dave's owned the store since 1984 and has grown it from a small specialty store to a large gaming haven which carries all kinds of games from Euros, to war games, miniatures, family games, CCGs, and RPGs. Dave, Patty, and their staff (Mike, the manager, Patrick and Bill) are friendly and helpful to everyone who comes in the doors. Many non-gamers who come into the store and are overwhelmed by the choices and scope of the selection often leave with a game or the gift they came to find.

They have play space and run tourneys and events for many different games and the space is hardly ever empty on a weekend.

Massachusetts:

Rivendell Books and Games
Rehoboth, MA

Rating: 9

Going on 3 years, Rivendell has become a fixture for the local gaming community with it's ecclectic naturalist decor, it's selection of many of the top titles in each genre, the multitude of weekly and monthly events it hosts, and it's stock of many intriquing gifts and collectibles. Rob is a gracious host to all who enter the shop, and is a veritable rules encyclopedia for many titles and role playing systems. The shop stocks euros, American titles, many parlour games, and also includes a large stock of RPG products and CCG titles (including singles). The Greater Attleboro Gaming Association hosts monthly events in store, along with numerous tournaments involving titles of interest. The only complaint that one could have with the shop is that both retail and gaming space are at a premium, which limits the number of gamers the back room can house, along with the overall volume of product the store can hold at capacity (but believe me- he's got it chock full of goodness), but Rob is always willing and able to make it work for us gamers, even if it means setting up card tables in the retail space. Given the following the shop has received, the space issue shouldn't be an issue for much longer.

Also in Massachusetts:

Scholars
Bridgewater, MA

Rating: 7

A gaming shop on the campus of Bridgewater State College, Scholars doubles as a textbook store for the school. The store carries a diverse selection of board games, RGP titles, and miniatures games, along with a multitude of CCG titles. This is a particuarly good location to find older CCG boxes and out of print RPG products on hand and be able to haggle for a good deal. The store offers gaming space as available and holds events for a few games. However, given the small overall size of the shop, retail space conflicts with gaming space, and vice versa; many titles and products are stacked in deep piles, minatures reside in their shipping boxes, and generally the location appears to have had a tornado run through recently. But if you have time (and an inhaler or have taken your antihistamines for the day- the one thing that keeps me a non-regular is the dust and odor from older texts on the shelves, so be forewarned) and cash, you may find something of interest.

Cambridge, MA: Pandemonium Books & Games
http://www.pandemoniumbooks.com/

Just reopened in Central Square after a four (!) month hiatus to move to their new location, Pandemonium is a fantasy/SF book and RPG store with a small but growing selection of Euros. The new location has considerable event space in the basement -- in fact, I'm going to the first meeting of a new board game group there tonight. Prices are MSRP but a "store membership" plan offers $25 credit back for each whole $250 in purchases. Can't beat the hours: noon to midnight every day!

Cambridge, MA: The Games People Play
http://www.thegamespeopleplaycambridge.com/ ("coming soon")

Broad selection of Eurogames, American-style family games, playing cards, puzzles of all kinds, chess, go and shogi materials and books, and a few wargames and RPG materials. Located a few blocks down Massachusetts Ave from Harvard Yard. Prices are MSRP, but sometimes it's hard to resist when the store is a five minute walk away on my lunch break.

Boston, MA: The Compleat Strategist
http://www.thecompleatstrategist.com/

A tiny store, across Massachusetts Ave from the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Crammed ten feet up the walls with wargames, RPG books, miniatures, and now a selection of Euros rivaling Games People Play. There is a small gaming area in the back, and sometimes demos in the main store area (which can make it very difficult to browse the shelves). The best selection of wargames I know about in the Boston area, but prices are at least MSRP, and unfortunately sometimes higher (like $130 for the mounted-maps edition of Armies of Oblivion - ouch). A few years ago membership in the MIT Science Fiction Society (which is open to all for a $12 annual fee) conferred a 5 or 10 percent discount here; I do not know whether it still does.

Kenmore Komics
Akron, OH

Rating: 8

Kenmore Komics is a well organized selection of comics (duh) and gaming products in a slightly out of the way location relative to the rest of the city. John keeps the place in exceptional order, as the shop is reasonably spacious and accommidates his stock well. Much of the store is dedicated to his assortment of collectible comic goods, models, and DVDs, but he also carries a dedicated stock of board and card games. Always on hand are a large number of Euro titles, along with AH and GMT wargames, and everything in between. The store is also home to a wide selection of RPG and miniatures products. The one detracting aspect from the store is that with as much good stuff as is kept on hand, there is no publically dedicated gaming space. But if you're in the area and have cash burning a hole in your pocket, you'll be hard pressed to find a better place to spend it.

I have not been in the store for a few years, but I have friends who frequent the shop. In the past they have carried wargames, board games, family games, RPGs, miniatures, etc. I hear that lately there has been a large focus on Euro Games. I am sure someone here can chime in and give a better description of their current inventory.

The Game Keeper was holding open gaming on Saturdays with space available for a 100+ people!

The owner, Larry Whalen also runs Face 2 Face games which has been reprinting such games as I'm the Boss, Winner's Circle (The new version of Royal Turf), and Sleuth.

One more thing when you go there the building that the store is located, The Arcade, is the oldest mall in America and was built in 1828. So, you can get you fill of games and visit a piece of history at the same time.

The Game Keeper's current selection is rather sparse. There's almost as many used titles in the half off boxes as there are new on the shelves, and that's not saying much. At the same time, the shop has had trouble dedicating space to a half sized GAGA event (which normally boasts 15-30 people), so saying it can be a venue for 100 isn't rightly proper.

Located on the corner of Park and B Street.

Excalibur games is located a few blocks away on D Street, between Capital and Park. They don't have much space, and maintain a pretty robust selection of boardgames and miniatures. They stick mostly to Magic: The Gathering, in terms of CCGs. Excalibur will also, generally, give returning customers some kind of discount on purchases. Always worth a loook.

Boise:

I have, personally, been to one games store in Boise called All About Games, and was very impressed with their layout, and gaming space. I am sure Boise natives could speak more specifically about that store, though.

CA is in dire straits when it comes to BG stores. We had a large franchise (The GameKeeper, owned by Wizards of the Coast I believe) shove nearly every small dealer out of business. Then the GameKeeper closed, leaving a veritable vaccuum across the Golden State. After this gaming apocalypse, we are lucky to have ANY survivors, but those we do have are a rag tag bunch.
I've been to nearly every game store south of Bakersfield, and it ain't a pretty sight.
The Best Selection award goes to the Last Grenadieron 820 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank. The atmosphere is like creeping around someone's basement: it's total chaos. That makes it kind of fun, but unfortunately the guys that work there make you feel like you're intruding on their private discussions everytime you open the door.
The Best Ambience award goes to The Game Zone, 2302 E. Colorado Blvd in Pasadena. The rest, in my opinion, are too overpriced to justify keeping them alive. Anytime purchasing off the internet and ordering priority shipping is CHEAPER than buying retail, you've got a retail problem. TAKE THE HINT, ALL WAYS GAMING and GAME CASTLE!

Yeah, I figured the Bay area was doing fine. On Rio Grande's website, half their CA distributors are in SF/Oakland. I wonder why the LA gaming scene sucks so much...

The rest, in my opinion, are too overpriced to justify keeping them alive. Anytime purchasing off the internet and ordering priority shipping is CHEAPER than buying retail, you've got a retail problem.

No. The problem is you have a profound lack of understanding of how retailing actually works. A game retailer orders from a distributor at a discount rate somewhere between 43-47% off the MSRP. An online retailer is his own distributor and can get between 53-60% off MSRP from the manufacturer. This is why an online retailer can sell games for 35% off and still stay in business (well, that and much lower overhead).

A game retailer usually cannot be a distributor either because he cannot afford to buy in such large bulk or he simply doesn't have the shelf space to put all the games. Plus, once he becomes a distributor, other distributors will not sell to him and the retailer must do all his ordering through dozens of game companies - while trying to provide good customer service to his customers. Either way, to expect a small independent game retailer to compete with an online retailer, given the difference in discount rates, is both unfair and unrealistic.

Although I would say the SF Bay area is doing okay, it has taken a few hits. Scenario Games in Fremont closed, as did Paradox Playground in Campbell. Although not simply a game store, San Antonio Hobbies in Mountain View closed also.

Gator Games in San Mateo is still alive and kicking. There is also Game Gallery (is that the name?) in Cupertino and San Jose (Blossom Valley).

In southern California, Brookhurst Hobbies is in Garden Grove. Is All Star Games still there in Diamond Bar? I haven't been there in years.

Last summer I took a traintrip across the country. Everywhere I went, I sought out the best, oldest, or most well known gaming store I could find. (Denver, Chicago, Boston, New York City). When I got back to my home, I realized that my favorite store is just around the corner...

The owners are all very knowledgeable, and friendly. They are quite good with personal service, and will actually dissuade customers from buying a game, or item that they feel would not suit the recipient, then give a great suggestion that does. (This, even if the price of the suggested item is much less that the item originally wanted. There in it for the right reasons...)

The Source Comics and Games, Falcon Heights, MN

I have been going to The Source for over 20 years now, and it's a GREAT store. They have a very large selection of games, comics, and other collectibles. If you are in the area (just south of Roseville in the Twin Cities) stop on by and play a game or two in their large gaming area in the back. Then you can drive over to Fantasy Flight HQ - it's only about 5 mins away! Don't tell them I sent you, though... :)

I heartily recommend both stores. Both have knowledgeable staff, excellent selection and space to play games.

I started my gaming hobby with Pheonix games when I was 10 years old (at that time it was called the Tin Soldier 25 years ago...)(...)(Wow, that long ago) buying D&D books. When I got older and found a gaming group, my friend and I bought many older game classics there such as Magic Realm, Civilization (Regular, Advanced and the Expansion), and Republic of Rome.

When I got into my Magic and VtES card buying phase I frequented the Source fairly regularly and met some other people that got added to our gaming group. Also, I have purchased many a eurogame from their shelves.

Now, I try and alternate between the two and try and support both.

It's half game store, half costume store, but it's the best place I know in Colorado. I'd welcome other suggestions.

Sorry about putting this in Comments first, I'm learning

On the northern side of the state, try:
Stonebridge Games
449 Main St., Longmont, CO 80501
(303) 776-3796
stonebridgegames.com

They carry a selection of Euros, American board games, CCGs and CMGs, along with some Warmachine, d20, abstracts and so on. They also have drinks and snacks, and have a menu from the pizza place next door: they'll deliver food to your gaming table :) . I give it a 9 out of 10.

Two more additions:

In Broomfield there is Timewellspent which is a warehouse so you pay internet prices but can avoid shipping costs by picking them up in person. It also seems to have every game you'd need.
www.timewellspent.org

Also in Boulder is Karliquin's Game Knight which focuses on miniatures but keeps a solid supply of card games and other quality strategy games.
