This is a list of Free, Print-and-play games that I've found worth the printer ink, cardstock and those sores I get on my fingers from using right-handed scissors. Okay, most of these games fall into the "light entertainment" category, except maybe Search Diver, Napoleon at Waterloo, Battle for Seattle, etc., but what's wrong with a little light entertainment? I've got BOO COO avalon hill brain twisters, not to mention Fritz Chess if I really want to get into mental gymnastics. (I seldom PERFORM any mental gymnastics, but I like trying, because I hardly ever fall and bust my butt). In truth, These are games that I love to play, and want to share with you. Do you have any favorite print and plays that aren't on here that you might want to recommend? I'd be very grateful!

This is a great game! I printed and laminated a deck, and I've played it a whole lot! We usually play scenarios, which turns it from a quick game to a 30-40 minute game - that is great to play over a pint of beer in any pub.

I tried to find out just what was missing, but alas, even if you click to "add to cart," you still don't find out what you're paying for. Too bad. This sounded like so much fun that I just couldn't wait to give it a try. Looks like I'll have to. I'm not going to pay for something not knowing what it is!

Yeah the game is not free, it is $3.95.

The game comes with 25 tiles, zombie and Marine counters (paper figs) and door counters.

You could use your own figs and map tiles.

This is a cute game; it doesn't have much of a creepy zombie atmosphere. It's got lots of luck involved, and you basically try to "trap" zombies for harvesting for their "prime aged steaks" for haut cuture underground epicures of the world after the the usual zombie holocaust abates. You do this by means of a simple board manipulation mechanic. It's easy, it's fun, and most importantly, IT'S GOT ZOMBIES!! (Who knew they tasted so good?)

It was barely ever in print. I'm not sure what the circulation of The Strategist was; I bought a huge stack of Strategist magazines (well, 'zines, anyway) a few years back to get this one. I'll see what I can do about some scans; I haven't gotten around to playing it yet, actually...

Put a scan up of the counters and a map. Which I'm positive I turned around and saved before I uploaded it, but there you are.

The glory of the game is the variety of scenarios--from a drug bust to the 1968 Democratic National Convention to Warsaw 1944, and lots in between.

The circulation of Strategist at the time was about 125 - one copy for each of the then 112 members, plus a few extras.

I originally designed this game in 1990, when I was living in Japan and tired of the few wargames (mostly Metagaming Microgames) I brought with me. I read the Hunter S. Thompson essay "The Police Chief", collected in The Great Shark Hunt, and was inspired to design a game on riot-breaking.

I may yet republish the game, either as a free download or with Fiery Dragon, but that's all very preliminary. I want to make some substantial changes to the design as well.

Meanwhile, anyone who offers me some kind of enticement could get an autographed photocopy of the game as it is from me....

Played this for the first time last week. There are 56 land battle scenarios and six naval scenarios included with the downloads, and plenty more scenarios available from other contributors to the site.

GMT Games has even given the game some props as a good source of info for Command And Colors: Ancients fans.

Well worth checking out!

I recommend this one. 10 minutes, to a extreme max of 35 minutes. It has a Diplomacy-esque combat system, but you only have up to a 3 card hand which determines where you can place a unit.

Feels like a much bigger game. Works well with any number of players - we've played all numbers a lot of times. Got 15 minutes and want a little wargame fix?

Rules Fix: Germany is a barbarian land only; Germany can never be an Empire, and thus can never bring the win. You don't have to implement this rule, but you will after Germany settles the vast majority of games.

They don't say it, but print the unit counters double-sided. Go ahead and fold them in half and glue them together, it helps the sorting and you only need half anyway. Shaving the only nuisance factor off this game makes it that much easier to break out quickly.

And if you play with 5, it is definitely not 15 minutes.

With 5, you either need a impending victory that all 4 players cannot combine to stop (not very likely), or have all the other players miss your impending victory.

Our last 5 player game we declared a draw after over an hour. So then it comes down to whoever could arrange the perfect hand to perform the perfect sneak attack to win (which still hadn't happened after an hour).

Love it! 1000 blank white cards. Few drinks, pens, and cards make for a total blast!

I'm in the business of making up a few print & play games because I'm about to leave my current employer and I feel like abusing the laser printer.

I picked some of the higher-rated ones and then read the rules to narrow down what I was going to try.

This is my first choice. Looks like a cracking game with a good balance of random and strategic element and opportunities for creative and exciting play.

Wiz War is awesome. But I don't think it is free. They even have a new edition for it.

Speaking of which, it's pretty easy to make your own homebrew expansion of cards. I had one of 100+ cards, no idea where the electronic copy is today. When I was asked, "but aren't the card backs different", I said, "Yes, but half the deck are cards I made". Didn't mention that you have to add Number cards to keep the ratios right, tho...

As I understand it, this new edition has been waiting in the pipeline for years and is still yet to emerge. I wouldn't hold your breath.

Whether it's strictly legal or not, there are a number of sites hosting the materials you need for homemade versions of the game. Just look at the links section of the 'geek entry.

This is my second pick. I've been trying to pick up a secondhand version of Kings & Things for ages, and this game is the precursor. A lot of people seem think it's actually a better game than K&T because it's shorter and more streamlined.

I was going to nominate this game, but seems I've been beaten to the punch.

Fond memories of pasting this one to the cardboard. Wonder if I still have those pieces stored away somewhere...

And this is my third pick. Cheeky really since this isn't public domain, but constructing the necessary parts is trivially easy and rules are available on the internet.

Doesn't actually look like a game I'm going to enjoy - a bit too abstract, but I've had it recommended to me for the screwage factor and dinosaurs are always cool.

I'm also going to be printing Sword and Sail and Oh No! There Goes Tokyo, but they're already on this list.

GLIK and it's sibling GLAK. The games are really very, very good. And the printing effort is very small - just some boards. Plus with the same boards you can play both games.

GLIK and GLAK are light and quick abstract games for 2 or 4 players. Both are based on action points that players may use during their turns, but the aim and rules are completely different. GLAK rules are available only in Polish now (English rules to be published soon).

Just to clarify - I wrote "light" but the games are nevertheless deep. Almost no random element and many possible decisions to make. The light feeling comes from relatively simple (or very simple in GLIK) rules.

God bless you for your concern for my poor, wretched fingers. I live in a benighted backwater of rural Kentucky where the nearest town, (and I bandy that word about very, VERY loosely), is ten miles away, no matter which way you go. This means that locally supplied lefty-scissors are a rare commodity indeed. Perhaps eBay or some other on-line source could provide me with relief? Until then, I'll just think of the right handed scissors as a means to toughen up my hands for boxing.

Highly-rated games that might actually be worth playing:

Although I really like this list as it points to some I might not otherwise have tried.

Yes, this really is what I looked like when I uploaded that avatar. Not that it's quite current anymore.

carries the comfortgrip either-hand scissors. Blades are right-handed, but the handle is truly ambidexterous. (I often cut with the left hand, so these have been a godsend. If I could find a pair with a left-handed blade....
