(MY first Geeklist. The world may never be the same.)

Got there Day One of the Precons, came home after the last event on Sunday. A lot of gaming in between. My apologies to those who names I forgot, after a while it's all a blur

If it seems that I'm talking about winning too much, I can honestly say it's the one convention I'd go to every year and if I didn't win a tourney for another 20 years I'd still go.

But winning makes me feel better

Well I was going to be in the Precon event that started at 2PM, but somehow severely underestimated how long it would take me to drive there. It was well underway by the time I got there. Bummer.

Fortunately there's people I know milling around, so I've got things to do. First up is a couple of games of Ice Breaker, a new card game from Sport FX. Nothing deep, but it does feel like hockey. A good way to kill 30 minutes. They also make a football game that I haven't played yet, but I've heard good things about.

So I'm at Origins talking to Andy Lewis at ther GMT booth right before the vendor room opens on the first day. When it opens I notice that almost immediately a line formed at the Clash of Arms Booth. Andy tells me they're selling a limited number of a new game from Martin Wallace. I knew nothing about it, but I like a lot of Wallace's games and there's only 25 copies so I jump onto line and get a copy.

But. . .I never got a chance to paly, so when Tom McCorry offered to teach it, I jumped at the chance. Another Civilization-light game (if there's a more overused phrase than Civ Lite, let me know what it is), but this one is fun. I have little chance of winning, but I get the hang of the game and will probably be teaching it at a CABS meeting soon.

Some more hockey, then it's around 11:30 and a bunch of guys are trying to decide what to play. I'm thinking an hour long game, instead they decide on Kremlin. As GM for 11 years, I can't honorably walk away, so I teach the newbies and off we go. The first three turns go slowly, but when I get my 10, 8 and 7 point guys in the right spot, the game speeds up - go figure! I'd have won even quicker than I did if both Mark Yoshikawa and Terry Coleman hadn't sent me to the Sanitorium to prevent a 3rd wave. (C'mon guys, it's Pete, I'm not going to make the roll for the win.)

Sunday morning and I'm set to give Shifting Sands a try with John Coussis. I read the rules once three weeks ago, that made me the expert at the table. But that wasn't going to stop us, we were just interested in a test drive.

I think I did pretty well as the Axis in 1940, the Italian were in pretty good shape in North Africa, and they were causing some mischief in other areas. In 1941 Rommel shows up, and I await the big-time German reinforcements. . .that never show up. MY WBC luck has officially arrived, the reinforcement cards are stuck at the bottom of the deck. Slowly the Brits are pushing me back to Tunis. I scrape together what probably would have been an effective counterattack, but John has the card that kills the whole thing. By summer of 1941 I know I'm toast.

On the whole my opinion of the game is positive. Even one of the playtesters mentioned that really bad cards like I got can screw you, but that's true of virtually any card game I've played. The game system worked fine, if you've played PoG, you're 2/3rds of the way there.

I tried this again on Monday with JR Tracy. This time as the Brits I forgot that the Axis has a card that lets the Egyptians revolt if the Brits lose Khartoum. When JR played it I had moved all my troops west, and he basically cut off the entire army's supply. I was able to send back troops to reestablish supply, but VP-wise the damage had been done. Again, things like this happen in any CDG (everybody who's ever played POG has lost Italy in 30 seconds at least once).

As history I'm unsure that some of the sideshows might be getting a bit more juice than they desrve at this scale. But game wise there's something here and I will be playing it again.

Sunday night I get my last good night's sleep for a while and then play in the Attika tournament. I'm roadkill in this game, but I've played it enough with Bruce Reiff and Jeff Mullet (who both made the finals) that I probably won't embarrass myself in a 2 player game. I get paired with Kaarin Engelmann in the first round, so much for an easy opponent in round one. Midway she made a bid to connect cities, I was able to stop it, but I had to do stuff I didn't want to do. At game's end that cost me as she was able to get all her tokens down one turn before I did.

The Attika tournament didn't need me after that, so I jumped into the Showcase Sampler. At CABS we make fun of Traumfabrik, but it's actually not a bad game. I usually like to keep up with the red star tiles but when Keith Levy pulled ahead, I switched to Make as Many movies as Possible, no Matter How Bad or Good they are. Which almost worked, I was one tile away from finishing a 6th movie that would have given me the game. Unfortunately the rest of the table saw what I was doing and (properly) denied me the tile I needed. Keith beat me by a few points.

Next was the above mentioned game of Shifting Sands with JR Tracy. That was followed by dinner at the Texas Steakhouse where condensation from the A/C would drip onto a beam, then onto me. Next I helped out a little in the auction room, then tried this game for the first time. John "The Master" Weber was teaching so it was time to sit back and play. An interesting collection of players including Barbara Flaxington, Richard Irving and David Platnick- no weak links there. I rate the game as OK- I'd play it again, but I'm not rushing out to buy it. Unless it's on sale

Tuesday night and I start off the convention proper with my traditioanl first game. I sit at a table with a girl named Ruth who introduces herself as somebody's girlfriend and this is her first game at her first convention and she's so happy to be here, etc. etc. A nice person who unfortunately gets stuck with Mark Mitchell and myself, and perky isn't going to score points with us. Mark and I make fun of each other (especially me since I was losing), our opponents, the dice, the GM, being cheery and just about anything else we can think of. I win a big convoy at the end . . . to get double digits in points. If you saw a girl Tuesday night crying, don't ask me I don't know anything about it. (Actually I did see her Saturday so she couldn't have been scarred too badly )

I played a second heat where I had good cards, but had trouble getting them on the table. Near the end I had to take some big chances that didn't work.

Friday I played a third heat where things broke my way. I had lots of points as spoils but few convoys. The other players kept pointing at the guy with the most convoys as the leader, who was I to argue? I also stayed away from Rolinda Collinson's purple dice (they're evil, I tell you!) and was able to get into the semis.

As soon as I sat down at the semis and saw Keith Hunsinger, Justin Thompson and James Pei (he had somked somebody in For the People fast enough he was able to make the semis- must have been his game against Dockter), I knew it was going to be a brawl. And it was. I got an early lead but did nothing of a long time. Keith was frontrunner most of the rest of the way and unfortunately I had cards that kept me on his side more than I would have liked. Finally at the end I scored a big convoy that almost stole the game, but Keith was able to hang on.

Well actually it was Superstar Baseball, but it's not listed on BGG. Anyway i got to the draft late and wound up with Seattle Mariners. They were taking the best all-time players for each team. I had A-Rod, Griffey and Randy Johnson on my team, so even though the team wasn't that great I had fun. Nice job by the guy who put the teams together (Randy Cox?), though I will quibble with the running ratings.

The format was draft a team and play during the week whenever you found somebody you hadn't played yet. GM Chris Palermo had a few scheduled times set up (after March madness). I thought it worked well. Yes guys who played more often got an edge, but in my book if you're willing to spend the time to play more, you deserve an edge. Especially over guy like me who saw it more as filler.

One quibble here: guys who show up for the draft shouldn't get worse teams than guys who shwo up a day or two later. That encourages me to not show up for the draft at all, just wait until I know the crummy teams are gone.

One heat I actually had a run going, including a thrilling 2OT victory over GM (and friendly rival) Terry Coleman. I was able to get a Hot Shooter card down in the 2nd OT and that was the difference. Unfortunately I ran out of gas after that. IMO this is the most fun tournament at the WBC. Everybody knows everybody, newbies are treated well and very few problem children.

Last year I won a game of this, but couldn't advance because it conflicted with my team game, and heaven forbid I shouldn't play in that. This year my schedule was clear, but in my game it quickly became obvious that (1) my main competition was sitting to my right and (2) the other two players weren't going to help slow him down. But things like that happen in heats and it was a pleasant enough game. 42 points normally wins or is close, but not when somebody gets like 10 extra actions

(If you've heard me whining about Kremlin before, skip the first paragraph).

I ran the Kremlin tournament for 11 years. At some point I realized that I hadn't won a heat in about three years (that's 3 or 4 games every year), so I decided to use that as my theme to the AAR you see in the yearbook/website. Then my luck really got bad. As in I started making the finals, but would lose when (just one story) I need to roll anything but a "1" on a 20 sided die for a Health roll to win, and out comes the "1". Add in the fact that I haven't won a WBC event of any game since 1995, but semi-regularly win at palces like Prezcon, and the WBC curse had settled in.

This year I wasn't running the event (long story, time to move on) so i only played until I qualified for the next round. First game David Buchholz got three waves and done. Second game Peter Staab and I both played a late game, and for a while it looked grim. But eventually guys started dying off and on turn 11 one of the other players had to in effect choose between Pete and myself. In classic Kremlin spirit, the guy picked up a die, asked me to call odds or evens, I called evens and he rolled a 2. That got me into the semis.

That led me to my first free Thursday in around 10 years. I had the March Madness run described previously, plus the loss to Kaarin in Formula Motor Racing. I hit the vendor room and picked up this game from Worthignton. I liked their Zulu game so I think this will work well also.

Other buys in the dealer room included Thurn and Taxis, Blood & Steel from L2 , Take Stock from Z-Man and Enenmy in Sight, the old AH game reprinted by Lost Battalion. I don't buy much at shows from guys like MMP and GMT because either I already have it, I've got in on preorder or I know I don't want it. Though I did get the latest copy of Operations and scenarios for C&C Ancients

The semis started Thursday night. 2 points on Nestor was enough for a wave and two missed waves. That was enough for 2nd place in the game and a trip to the finals. (And people wonder why I always put points on Nestor).

The final features Chris Geggus, who won the event in 1998 and hadn't made the trip from Britian since, Sean McCulloch, a good player from CABS and a 4th whose name completely escapes me.

Frequently I put points on the Foreign Minister and use him to move up my guys. In this game I was dealt the card that breaks the Foreign minister, so I didn't do that. The card becomes huge later.

My token one point on Nestor is not enough as Chris went unexpectedly for an early strategy. One crucial move on Turn 2 when I use the Sports Minister to get my 7 pointer out of Siberia. I thought Chris had points on him, but he declined to stop me. Chris got two waves, but on turn four Nestor dies off.

This is the turning point of the game. The Foreign Minister nominates somebody on the first row who isn't Chris. That fails. Before the second nomination, I play the card that sends the Foreign Minister to the people. Now the Ideology Chief does the nominating. And my healthy 10 pointer gets to nominate my healthy 9 pointer (The Industry minister) for the job. :-)

The table does the right thing and lets the oldest one get the job. I now get move all my people up, including the guy the sports minister got out of Siberia. Turns out the sports minister did belong to Chris, but he was playing it tight.

Turn four I get a free wave. Turn five the Party chief gets sick and fails the wave roll. Uh oh, the jinx is setting in. Turn six my people are dying off but the Party chief is still only one sick and makes the second wave. In the Add Influence phase Chris in desparation properly puts two points on the Party Chief, but that's not going to be enough. Turn seven all my other best guys are gone, but the Party Chief hangs in with two sick markers. Parade Phase I wait for the assasination attempt that never comes (the cards are still in the draw pile). I need a 14 or greater on the 20 sided die. If I don't make this roll, I'm probably toast, and Sean and the 4th player will probably sweep in.

I roll the die. It's a 19!!!! It's over!

Meanwhile, at the front desk, Don Greenwood notices a detects a sudden shift in the force. . .

This usually is my usual foursome (Mark Yoshikawa, Dennis Nicholoson and Mark Mitchell) listening to Pete whine about how he lost Kremlin again. Not this year! We play in the hallway by the gift shop, drinks in hand. Dennis and I abuse the Marks for not winning wood, the Marks abuse Dennis and I for being wood snobs. We abuse the dice, the GM, Ken Gutermuth for rolling 56s, the kids playing in the hallway, and just about anybody that walks by. I keep tradition by putting two balls into the water. But it doesn't bother me- I've got wood.

Friday I played MARCH MADNESS in the AM and Atlantic Strom in the afternoon, with a few Superstar Baseball games in between. Friday night I played a open game of Galaxy (Bruce Monnin's first open game in 16 years- I'm honored). Then I was in the 9PM heat at a table with Bruce Monnin, Mark Mitchell, John Keating and somebody who I've completely forgotten. We spend the game abusing each other, the other tables, the GM (who's sitting at our table), the dice, the art work on the cards etc. etc. I get hosed late in the game. But it's OK, I've got wood.

This year you played three games within a group of 4 players, the best record from each group advanced. I missed out by three points on a tiebraker. Normally I'd be bitter, but not this year. . .

This was the event I ran. Unfortunately I only drew 26 players, way down from the previous years. Wish I knew why, but I don't have a good guess. I doubt it got enough to make it back next year.

Anyway, I lost my heat, but I'm the GM so stick around to watch the final. Fortunately it was an interesting game. The six players were separated by a mere $300 going into the last race. In the 3rd race, Lisa Gutermuth was able to get a big payout on the second place horse (it was her 2, only one other player had bet on it), and that prevented the Gutermuth family from going woodless.
