2006 was my first ever trip to the WBC. And only my second con ever (BGG 2005 was the first). I had missed the opportunity to play in the 2005 WBC when I had a business trip to Philly the week before. So I was ready this year. I had a flight credit from an earlier cancelled 2006 trip, so that sealed the deal.

So here's my list of games played, won, bought, hoped to play, and more. Enjoy!

I arrived Sunday to play in the Sampler Showcase on Monday and Tuesday. Mostly because Die Macher, one of my favorite games, was to have a tourney on Tuesday.

My game had a friendly group and I thought I was going to win with the the last election in my grasp. Lost the last election by a nose. This plumetted me to 4th place I think. . Regardless, lots of fun!

So flash back to Monday. I played several euros this day including this one.

I had never played Traumfabrik before, but the Knizia design had a touch of familiarity. Loved it! Finding a copy for myself is now the challenge.

Other Sampler Showcase games played....

Vegas Showdown
Kreta
Oltremare
Modern Art
Himalaya
Reef Encounter
and....

I played this with one of its premier BGG haters (compared to AoS at least), Richard Irving. I think I need a T-shirt "I played Railroad Tycoon with Richard Irving".

Sure Richard bashed RRT even while we played it. Luckily he comes across nicer in person than he does on the Geek. Just have to convert him now.

There were some new players to the game so I can't take too much pride in winning the game. In the opening round, the sixth bidder wondered why I kept bidding instead of just letting him win and taking second. The two Railroad Executives might have had something to do with that...

Hey, I took third in the Showcase Sampler. I left Thurn & Taxis on the table as a prize for Richard Irving who was running late. I've only played once and was very underwhelmed.

So I claimed this instead.

Flash back to Tuesday night. More tourneys are starting up. My top two choices are either Caylus, which I know quite well, or this game which I played for the first time this year. I go with the game I just don't get to play enough at home.

I win my first heat! The semis are tomorrow morning, but I'm thinking about dropping since the next round (semis) conflict with other games I want to play. Two other winners drop first and suddenly the semis are now the Finals. Ok, now I'm in!

Wed morning we have a great game. I avoid cominng in last by all of a point. I don't care, that Finals game was just fun! And it was a roommate who takes first.

I finish my HotW game first since I was Russia, the first empire of the last epoch. So I can rush off for the first heat of Manifest Destiny, another favorite game of mine. I'm right in there with a shot to win, only to be shot down at the end. I miss the second heat, and then have a third heat (on Thurs) similar to my first in outcome.

Only in the third heat, when another player advertises that he is holding back the IRS and its his only card, boy does playing the Spy draw a chuckle.

Wednesday I wrap up with a game I hadn't played in over a year. Not only is this a tough game, my first heat has some real sharks at the table. Wed. morning when my alarm goes off to wake for the second heat, I decide this will be my morning to sleep-in instead.

I'm refreshed and ready to play this again now. Tough getting my locals to play though.

So now that I've slept in on Thurs morning, I'm off my planned schedule and looking for a new plan. I start to play a pick-up game of Struggle of Empires, but then a gamer walks in with free scenarios they're handing out for this tourney.

Now I own a copy of this and have played lots of Memoir 44 and Battlecry, but I hadn't gotten to this yet. So the tournament is a "friendly" introduction. The first heat is a round robin of 4 player groups. I win one readily, lose one badly, and barely lose the third. Ah well, at least I discovered I like the game.

And I got to meet Richard Borg. Great guy to talk to. He observed one of my games a bit since my opponent had a set of minis to play the game. He grinned at some traps I laid even though they didn't win my game.

Off to my next tourney game. I join in for the second heat of this after missing the first. It's a pretty competitive game after I make a dumb mistake in the first round (could have advanced my colonist track with a ship-only expedition card before trying to found a colony). I edge out a win and decide I'll play in the semis on Fri morning.

I wrap up mu Thurs. night with the 3rd heat of Manifest Destiny, so now it's back to this Fri morning. Despite ignoring the expedition track most of the game I have a nice game where I pull out a win. On to the finals!

The final is a tough game where one player is all the way advanced on the expedition track before you know it. He's playing and hauling in new cards constantly. I fight back with some nice value auctions that I win. And others are nice enough to provide good funding for my auctions. So I win. After the game another player reveals he memorized the money of all players throughout the game. That's scary.

The Dallas gamers will now just enjoy it that much more when they beat me at this.

So Friday night I'm looking for a new game again and stumble into the second heat for this. I'd only played once in Dallas. I squeak out a win in my game and advance to the semis. I barely lose my semis as I tie with another player for the most corruption. The crocs ate us both. And there I was with the most points. I guess the crocs at those too.

Saturday morning comes and again I have to pick a new tourney. I go with this one since so many other games I like are now in their semis and its too late to join. Using the Shadow armies, I roll my first three opponents with ease. I have to say I had some of the best dice ever at WotR that day. The Fellowship could not escape me.

In the semis that night I accept a bid to play the Free People. Nice change of pace. Except for my dice. I slaughter about thitry troops trying to take Minas Tirth from me. Aragon and Legolas contribute to the defense. With the game in hand, my opponent let's me slaughter Saruman and the Witch King.

Sunday morning its back to WotR for the Finals. I take a 13 point corruption track with the Free People. This is a tough game. Quite competetive with an uncertain outcome. I make it halfway through Mordor prior to the last round. Then my dice go cold. Not enough character dice to walk into Mt. Doom. So I put in a valiant but fruitless military defense. At least I held Minas Tirth again.

We had at least 10 spectators watching the second half of the game. Reminded me of my days of playing in chess tournaments.
