The dynastic struggle began when France's Louis XIV attempted to place his grandson, Philip IV, on the throne of Spain. The other major powers saw that as a threat, and so supported their own candidate, Charles III. That in turn began over a decade of fighting that grew into a general struggle for domination over all of Western Europe.

# Flanders and Rhin strategic campaigns

by Allan Poindexter and W.P. Guthrie

This army-level strategic game, first published in The Wargamer magazine (#61), is a simulation of the battles of The War of the Spanish Succession, 1702-1714.
One player takes command of the French; the other player plays the Allied forces (British, Dutch, Austrians, etc.).
Nine scenarios and one Campaign game cover major battles such as Blenheim, Moselle, Landau, or the complete War. Victory is dependent on the scenario being played, but in most instances it is based on points gained through capturing and eliminating opponent's units, capturing supply trains, and occupying cities and fortresses.

Long games with a lot of counters and die rolls but it is a good attempt at covering these 2 battles, especially Malplaquet. It could have had more historical chrome imo but if you are found of this periode, you must play this game just to make your own mind about it...

Vae Victis issue 20. This game uses the same system (with some minor corrections and modifications) that was used in Vae Victis issue 6, "Fontenoy 1745." This battle ended the Spanish War of Succession. One turn represents one hour of real time, an infantry counter represents a brigade of one or more regiments, and a cavalry counter represents four to eight squadrons.
As with all Vae Victis games, the counters need to be cut out and mounted. The rules are entirely in French, although translations are available online.

This is the only game to cover Denain and both OOB and map are both very accurate…
Unfortunately scenarios and rules do not allow simulate well the battle and they also artificially limit the gameplay to straight assault as only option.
Different ruleset and scenario would have definitely given a more historical render to this battle. Being the only game to cover this battle and as it is a cheap game, it is worth trying just to have a general idea of that battle…

"A Famous Victory (AFV) allows players to recreate two of the major battles - Blenheim and Ramillies - fought by England and her continental allies against the ambitions of the Sun King, Louis XIV, during the War of the Spanish Succession, a war that revealed John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough, as England's greatest Field Commander and one of the true military geniuses in history."

There are two different games inside the box: one on the field battle fought before the city and the other for the siege itself. The quality of the maps is not very high, while the counters (more than 500) are a work of art, with splendid reproduction of the period uniforms.
The rules seems of medium complexity and of the usual kind for the field battle, while they seems very peculiar for the siege battle itself.

This simulates two of the "Duke of Marlborough's" Battles during the "War of the Spanish Succession" featuring Blenheim(1703) & Oudenarde(1708). It has two 22-inch by 17-inch mapsheets in four sections that have to be put together, and the game's two countersheets have to be mounted and cut apart prior to commencing gameplay with these. There are plenty of Cavalry involved in these, as well as the Dragoons which seem to be in transition in Historical terms.
