The dynastic struggle began when France's Louis XIV attempted to place his grandson, Philip IV, on the throne of Spain. The other major powers saw that as a threat, and so supported their own candidate, Charles III. That in turn began over a decade of fighting that grew into a general struggle for domination over all of Western Europe.

Vae Victis issue 20. This game uses the same system (with some minor corrections and modifications) that was used in Vae Victis issue 6, "Fontenoy 1745." This battle ended the Spanish War of Succession. One turn represents one hour of real time, an infantry counter represents a brigade of one or more regiments, and a cavalry counter represents four to eight squadrons.
As with all Vae Victis games, the counters need to be cut out and mounted. The rules are entirely in French, although translations are available online.

This is the only game to cover Denain and both OOB and map are both very accurate…
Unfortunately scenarios and rules do not allow simulate well the battle and they also artificially limit the gameplay to straight assault as only option.
Different ruleset and scenario would have definitely given a more historical render to this battle. Being the only game to cover this battle and as it is a cheap game, it is worth trying just to have a general idea of that battle…

# Flanders and Rhin strategic campaigns

by Allan Poindexter and W.P. Guthrie

This army-level strategic game, first published in The Wargamer magazine (#61), is a simulation of the battles of The War of the Spanish Succession, 1702-1714.
One player takes command of the French; the other player plays the Allied forces (British, Dutch, Austrians, etc.).
Nine scenarios and one Campaign game cover major battles such as Blenheim, Moselle, Landau, or the complete War. Victory is dependent on the scenario being played, but in most instances it is based on points gained through capturing and eliminating opponent's units, capturing supply trains, and occupying cities and fortresses.

This is an old school game form 1978… I don’t own it but I did some researches as I was looking for it…
It is using the old wargame system 1:1, 2:1 with a d6 and some DR, DE results, if you see what I mean… Absolutely no historical realism or chrome here…
Being in one of the first Wargamer issue, it is now a collector item with a price that has nothing to do with the actual game quality…
I stopped looking for this game as it seems to have, in fact, no real game quality… If you want to make your own opinion, you can have a closer look at the game by downloading its gamebox version…

I think the game is fairly realistic given a complexity level comparable with the quads (Thirty Years War, Napoleon at War, Blue&Gray, etc.), Neither Blenheim nor the quads make a direct effort to reflect linear tactics. They all reward having a line. You don't want exposed flanks, even the ones that open in the middle of your line due to losses. Where it fails, similar to the 30YW quads, is in allowing unengaged battalions pull out of the line, shift over a hex or two, and fill in a gap. Such a maneuver, while possible in real life, would be a pain.

But, unit density is higher, the map is smaller and the combat table is based on split results with disruption and losses rather than retreats. The side that loses more in a melee must retreat or suffer an additional hit. (1st hit is a disruption, the 2nd is a loss). The ZOC-kills, Exchanges and Eliminations that drive the quads are absent here. This combat system produces large amounts of disordered troops (vulnerable on defense and useless on offense) that recover slowly.

Cavalry is the other realism issue. It is little more than quick infantry that can avoid certain effects of infantry ZOCs. There are no charges and no squares. But, the base combat factor may reflect charge strength, and the limited mobility advantage it enjoys may be enough to encourage players to husband it for decisive action against disordered troops who would not be able to form a square anyway.

Combat will produce disorder, success less so than failure, but both sides will tatter and fray. Lines will visibly disorder before they break. The overall effect is closer to the Musket and Pike Battle System than to one of the quads.

The Brits start down 60 pts, and have to launch a frontal attack across the Nebel (a swampy mess). In 12 turns they have to: make many unattractive attacks in order to create a few successes that can be exploited; they will have to attack Oberglau, Lutzingen and Blenheim without being able to guarantee success anywhere; and they will have to watch losses constantly to make certain the French and Bavarians break before the Austrians.

In short, it will play out like the real thing, in two hours, with few rules questions. And the winner will feel he won a real wargame.

The biggest difference will be that neither player will feel the mounting toll of British casualties in the evening assaults on Blenheim because in game terms those would be disruptions, not losses.

I have A Famous Victory, Marlborough Man, and Marlborough at Blenheim. (And I will would gladly grab a Ben Hull treatment if he ever offers one.) But I like this for a simple game on a hard battle.

Global Conflict

by Joseph Miranda

Marlborough: War of the Spanish Succession, is a wargame of intermediate-to-high complexity, designed by Joseph Miranda.
Itis a two player game. One controls the forces of France and its allies, known as the Bourbon coalition, after the ruling house of France. The other player controls the forces opposing France, led by England and Austria and known as the Grand Alliance. Each player has a variety of military, diplomatic and economic instruments with which he can attempt to win the game by controlling states and economic centers.
The game includes several scenarios. Shorter scenarios represent critical parts of the war, while the "Grand Design" scenario covers the entire war. Certain rules are designated "optional," and the players don't have to use them. The optional rules are suggested for use only when playing the Grand Design scenario, as they add considerable complexity, historical detail and playing time.
The 34x22" large-hex map shows western and central Europe during the early 18th century. The grid of hexagons printed over the map provides locations for playing pieces and geographic features. During the game, the cardboard pieces are placed within individual hexes.
Each game turn represents one year; each hex scales to 50 miles. Each army represents 10,000 to 20,000 soldiers and support personnel, camp followers, etc. A leader represents that person plus his guards, entourage, lackeys, wine cellars, etc. A fleet represents 60 warships and an indeterminate number of transports.

Basic but correct rules for the periode. The victory conditions are very bad aswell as the map (ill centered), both bring an unintersting gameplay... Nice counters and good research on the OOB... It also has the avantages to be cheap and to be the only game on this batlle...

There are two different games inside the box: one on the field battle fought before the city and the other for the siege itself. The quality of the maps is not very high, while the counters (more than 500) are a work of art, with splendid reproduction of the period uniforms.
The rules seems of medium complexity and of the usual kind for the field battle, while they seems very peculiar for the siege battle itself.

This simulates two of the "Duke of Marlborough's" Battles during the "War of the Spanish Succession" featuring Blenheim(1703) & Oudenarde(1708). It has two 22-inch by 17-inch mapsheets in four sections that have to be put together, and the game's two countersheets have to be mounted and cut apart prior to commencing gameplay with these. There are plenty of Cavalry involved in these, as well as the Dragoons which seem to be in transition in Historical terms.
