I recently browsed through Boardgamenews.com's Essen Preview lists, making my own list of games I thought sounded exciting. This is it!

A few comments:

- Being an old wargamer who has primarily played eurogames for the last decade or so, I still tend to prefer heavier and meatier games with strong themes over light and/or abstract games (that being said, I like Geschenkt, so go figure). For me, the right theme adds a lot to my game experience, and the wrong theme can ruin a game for me.

- The list represents not the generally most-looked forward to games of Essen (nor the limited edition collector's items), but rather the games that have caught my interest, mainly based on artwork, theme and the description of gameplay. You will therefore look in vain for the latest Age of Steam expansions (I am not a big AoS fan), Hameln, and many other highly anticipated games.

- Obviously, these are not all "Essen games", with some even being available already. The rule is that if it is on Boardgamenews.com's Essen Preview list, it's a potentially applicable for list.

- Since assembling the list, some of the games already out have seen more comments and feedback here on the 'geek. And not all of it very good, so some of these games are pretty borderline already.

Have you played any of the following games, been involved in development and/or playtesting, or are you just dying to voice your opinion, please leave a comment.

If you think I am missing a potential gem, feel free to add it.

Admittedly, the various enthusiastic comments from our Italian friends along the lines of "best game ever!" and "when will this be a top 10 game?!" does make me more than wary.

That being said I still have high hopes for it. As long as it's not "the next Caylus".

I am not from Italy or trolling for DaVinci or Mayfair. Once the rules and cards were made available on BGG and at the company website in English, I decided I couldn't wait until it came out in the US and made up my own hand-made game and starting playing it -- last time I can recall being enthusiastic enough to do this was with PR -- and have only done it with a couple of other games since. It's a really good game, may need a few minor tweaks, my guess is it plays best with 4, seems too easy with 2 or 3 and a bit too difficult to get things rolling with 5 (sort of my same view of Caylus, which I still like but play alot less these days). I ordered it last week from the first US on-line retailer to have it in stock (Fairplay) and hope to have it real soon.

Definitely, I'd have to say from the 5 or so plays thus far with the hand-make version, this game looks like a winner and is not a bunch of hype.

Settling your people on an ever-changing island. Terraced tile-laying a la Java. One of only two new games from Hans im Glück this year, the other being the card game Kabale und Hiebe (which, being described as "... in the tradition of Citadels" is definitely not for me).

As Andy writes below (see Justinian entry), KJW may well be a one-hit wonder, with Carcassonne overshadowing whatever else he's done. I haven't tried any of his other games, so I can't really tell how good they are. But on the other hand, Carcassonne is such a powerful wonder that I feel one must still keep an eye open for KJW's other releases.

The components for Anasazi, as shown on boardgamenews.com, make the game look very interesting. Time will tell...

I tried this with four others. Your strategic options are almost eliminated before the first turn based on the initial advantage your player matt provides. Of course you don't know that til you're an hour or two into the game. That's when it stops being fun. Therefore, the game seems to run too long after you're permanently locked into a losing 2nd place among all options and therefore can never get another princess. Contrary to the real world, these princesses are not attracted to money.

The 'do not try this at home' attempt at being politically correct in the rules is the highlight of the game.

A new Britannia-style game is something to look forward to - potentially at least. Britannia is one of my most-played games, and one of my all-time favorites. On the other hand, Andreas Steding, the designer of Italia also made Hispania, and that I didn't like: Too long, fiddly, overwrought and overly complex for its own good.

So here's hoping Italia leans more to the "Britannia side" of the family tree.

Will probably buy.

I like the fact it plays with 3, so if you want to play such a game, you have Italia with 3 and Britannia with 4. I have to think it is less involved than Hispania, because of the production company: Azure Wish had no problem making monsters, but Phalanx tends to make more streamlines stuff. Worth a look, anyway.

An interesting point is that, while the game might "bring to life almost 1500 years of Italian history, from 330 BC to 820 AD", it is really two games in one, with Italia I being a three-player game covering 330-80 BC, and Italia II being a four-player game covering 390-820 AD.

Am I reading it correctly that there is no "campaign game" covering the whole sheebang?

I hope Italia will be more streamlined and simple than Hispania was and having Phalanx as the publisher bodes well for that. I also worry about playing time: The description mentions 600 counters and even with no reuse between the two games, a 300 counter Brit-like game does sound like something that will take a while to finish.

I note that boardgamenews.com now has an image of part of the game board with counters on it and it sure looks yummy.

So it's got Leo Colovini as co-designer and from the description it sounds like it's more than 50% abstract exercise with pasted on theme, but it just might be a good game for all that...

Jens, I may well be at the next table on the Phalanx stand. Four of these five are on my to try list too. The odd one out for me at the moment is Anasazi. The Native American theme caught my eye, but in reading the descriptions I can't get Diamant out of my mind. And for me Klaus Jurgen Wrede remains firmly in the category of one hit wonder.

I played a prototype of Perikles in February. I think that the Struggle of Empires comparison is a little exaggerated. The game has the concept common in other Wallace games of the players representing factions with no fixed allegiance to a particular party or state (Liberte, Princes of the Renaissance, Byzantium). The area control/electoral first phase gain you some victory points and set you up with military forces to battle for more victory points in the second. There's some interesting asymmetry between the mighty Sparta and Athens and the other states and between Sparta (strongest on land) and Athens (stronger at sea). All states have different objectives in the battle phase and can aid each other. Combat is simply resolved, though I forget quite how.

In terms of complexity, I'd say Perikles is about on a par with last year's Byzantium.

The latest from Ystari is undoubtably worth a look. No, I found Ys only so-so and I don't care much for Caylus but I really, really like Mykerinos, so in my book Yspahan is a potential winner too. Plus, the theme is nice.

Will probably buy.

This one confuses me.....The designer says (I think) it's can be played as a family-friendly game as well as a more of a hardcore game. And then someone commented that it is definitely not a family-friendly game.

Tile placement game with *triangular* tiles! Looks Carcassonne'ish, but does it play even remotely like Carcassonne?

Might buy.

Of course, as the designer I believe that the game is totally original, but I have been told that the actual gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of games like Euphrat & Tigris and Acquire. Some people also see similarities with games such as Atilla and Vinci.

It's Carcassonne-ish in the sense that you are building a landscape by placing tiles next to eachother. However, in Gheos there are no restrictions as to where you are allowed to play certain tiles (a tile always "fits") and you can also replace existing tiles, allowing for some interesting moves. Other than the tile-laying aspect there aren't many similarities with Carcassonne. Gheos is definately a bit more involved than Carcassonne, although it is still fairly easy to understand.

If you want to judge for yourself, the rulebook is available for download on the Z-Man games site.

Looks like a very interesting game René. Any idea when it might available in the US for those of us who can't make it to Essen? Best of luck at Essen, I hope it does very well.

Thanks Tom. According to Zev Gheos will be available for retail in the US three or four weeks after Essen, if everything goes well.

Well, it lists at £34.99 in UK (about US$66) but I'm sure it'll cost significantly less in Germany.

Oh ... and it was made in Germany (unlike last year's Z-Man release Parthenon: Rise of the Aegean).

I just got it in....looks great. Wooden bits, The instructions are a little skimpy (no examples, no graphics, etc.). I like the board, even though it's small for a big box game....The print quality is great. There will be no confusion when it comes to matching wooden cubes and the print on the small cardboard tiles.

Can't wait to play it this Saturday

So, Genesis is not the next E&T, despite being Knizia and looking like a rethemed E&T. The rules are 1 page. But is it 'simple and elegant' or 'simplistic and boring'?

Probably won't buy.

Interesting list. Curious not to see CBG's new Civ sytle game, Through the Ages, on your list although you seem to like many similar type game. It, along with Leonardo da Vinci, are the games at the top of my list right now.
