What with all the attention given to the latest fad in gaming, I figured it was about time that we all looked back to our roots and gave some credit where credit was due. Yeah, that's right - it's time to stand up and recognize the Ameritrash game. So what exactly makes an Ameritrash game? Find out below.

This list inspired me to find the most ameritrashish game I own that hasn't been listed yet- Key to the Kingdom! Lets see:

Dice-Go
Fantasy Theme-Go
Insane(ly poorly written) rules- Go
Chrome- THAT'S ALL THIS GAME IS! GO GO GO
Plastic Minis- Go
Slew of Cards- Go
Gadgets- Go
Horror Theme- Go
Science Fiction Theme- Go (There's a cyborg alien bounty hunter! This game has it all!)
Player Elimination- Go (not often, but when it happens, you do so by crushing your opponent inside the folding board!)
Conflict- Go
Randomness- Go
Take That- Go
Sense of Adventure- Go
Long turns- Go
Long games- Go
Toy Factor- Go

And the quality I'm adding to this list:
Pictures of actual people playing the game on the box.
Just look at that box. Can you imagine the latest Euro with a bunch of screaming kids on the box? Heck no! That's not nearly elegant enough, but it just screams ameritrash.

Hot Babes

"There's nothing wrong with a little cheesecake."
--Phil Foglio

American designers are not shy about appealing to the guy-dominated gaming market's...er, baser instincts. Fantasy-themed games are especially prone to it, and I'm the very last person to complain. No, really.

This trend is especially odd in light of the conventional wisdom that, whereas Europeans glorify sex and eschew violence, Americans do the precise opposite. I guess this goes to show that no rule is perfect.

Cue "Busen Memo" link in 5...4...

War Stories! Ameritrash games have a narrative, making remembering turning points and heroic comebacks oh so easy. My friends and I still give each other crap about stuff that happened in games 20 years ago....and I cant remember much of anything dramatic from euros I played last week.

Cheap Game Boards

Ameritrash games don't get those fancy boards like the Euros do. We've got to deal with "The Valley" in the middle of the board, or the dreaded "puzzle piece" board. And don't even talk to me about paper maps and plexiglass.

I just got this in trade. It was published in 1987 by TSR (rember them?, has giant mutant hamsters and penguins with weapons strapped to their bodies and it takes four hours to play, and has some broken rules. It has CHEERFUL cartoon violence, just like the nightly news and professional sports. This game self-referentially glories in its own ameritrashiness. Be sure to click on this image to get the full detail, including cars and motorcycles with mounted weapons being pursued by a t-rex with a head-mounted laser and bionic claws. Or you could just take down your well-worn copy of Hansa and, I dunno, ship some goods.

Gammarauders reminds me of another thing that some Ameritrash games have in abundance and Eurogames virtually never have...

Background Material

Especially common in wargames, where it's de rigeur to have at least a page or two of information on the war simulated in the game (and of course simulation in itself is an Ameritrash feature), extensive background material can also commonly be found in fantasy or SF games. In a Eurogame, background material is at most a paragraph explaining the players' roles in the pasted-on theme.

Huge Rule Gaps

There's nothing like making up rules for the game because they're missing from the rulebook. This is part of the fun and creativity involved with Ameritrash games that sadly has been lost in the Euro quest for "quality" and "playtesting". Few and far between are the Euro games where we can invent our own rules out of necessity. Thank God for Mare Nostrum.

Tons of rules to make all the over abundance of chrome and theme work... to only fail miserably because of too many permutations that come about.

If anyone is familar with this game, you will know what I am talking about. Sierra Madre has EVERYTHING in it. You can run railroads, build business, run for president of Mexico AND the United States. Cause wars between Mexico and the United States. Become a war hero. Do who knows what else. Have multiple rounds of combat, and have the entire game collapse because there are far too many permutations of possibilities in the game to actually have it be playable and have the rules cover everything. The EVERYTHING had me actually buy the game, but I never got to it. I would like to try it... ONE DAY.

Themeless abstract strategy games. I KNOW there is the GIPF series. BUT, I will comment that America is also noted for producing an abundance of THEMELESS abstract strategy game. I mean games where it is just play mechanics, and strategy. There is no attempt to slap some sort of theme on top, like the Eurogames.

Take Pueblo for example. If this were released as an American design, there would be no attempt to put a theme on it. It would be released as "Low Score Stackers". "Billabong" would be "Chinese Checkers Racer" or something else. You wouldn't get the wooden kangaroos. They would be just abstract checker-like pieces.

This is another side of "Ameritrash" design. Either go heavy on the theme, and forget the play mechanics, or go with straight play mechanics, and forget the theme.

Event Cards

Pointing out a specific trademark typical to "Ameritrash" designs. Not just cards in general (yes Ameritrash has them), but EVENT cards. Yes, some Eurogames have these. But the game specifically powered by cards you flip over that determine events, is not as common. Typically, they would be part of some auction mechanism, auctioned off to players to use.

Grand Imperialism, chosen for this entry, is heavily powered by Event Cards. I could of also gone with Summit here.

Millions of Expansions

If one thing is good, then more must be better, right? One could argue that Talisman is the Carcassonne of the AT games, where expansions kept coming out with regularity until GW decided to kill the franchise off. (There seems to be no slowing down with Carc, however.)

In addition to the expansions, there were always a few cool alternate games to play, like the one with only one Talsiman in the game. As GW said in the rules (paraphrasing), "This makes for a short but very bloody game."
