In November of 2005 I compiled a list of my top 100 games . I will be posting my updated list for 2006 here, hoping to get more comments (comments are fun and I didn't get alot of them at blogger.com)

This list will preface that much larger list which is coming very soon. These are games that fell out of my personal top 100.

Note: These are all (imo) still very good games. Some games fell, others rose, and some new games were added. After the dust settled, these were the titles that just missed the cut.

I just couldn't justify this being on the list any longer. Despite its brilliance and depth, the entry fee is just too high.

Wow, bounced all the way from #15 within one year. That fell faster than Taylor Hicks...

By the smiley, I'm guessing that he knows who Taylor Hicks is, and was just jokingly referring to my note about his drop into eventual obscurity.

Who is Taylor Hicks? Really. I won't put a smily face, because I have no idea.

I'm pretty sure he (or she?) is the newest American Idol.

Now, go feel good about yourself.

Ah. That 'splains it. I've never seen American Idol, unless Chuck Barris' Gong Show counts from 1976.

This isn't the right graphic. I couldn't find a listing for the basic D&D RPG. Anyway, that's what this is supposed to be.

Again, it's hard to justify the presence of a game that I haven't played in 25 years and am unlikely to ever play again. 'nuff said.

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what exactly you're ranking in your top 100 lists. It can't be the top 100 games you're currently enjoying because then D&D wouldn't have been on the list. So what does your top 100 list measure?

It's mostly what I'm enjoying (or would like to be enjoying) right now. Go and Dungeons and Dragons were probably the two biggest violatons of consistency there. That's one reason I removed them.

Actually, the "would like to be" makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!

A wonderfully elegant and simple 2-player abstract by Dan Troyka. I wish I got a chance to play it more often.

There's no image listed for this one. It's a two-player abstract played with a Go set. It "simulates" a soccer game and is probably one of the best-themed abstracts out there (unless that's an oxymoron).

I suspect I'll get my ears boxed for this one. Yes, it's gorgeous and can even be quite fun. But I don't find myself reaching for it as much as I used to -- and I never played it a great deal to begin with.

Not a bad little horse-racing/gambling game. With alot of players you can really get into the spirit of the game and almost make it an event. Trouble is, you have to have several like-minded people who are in the mood for such an "event."

This is a clever little abstract, but I rarely play it for the sake of *playing* it anymore, if that makes any sense. Most times I would introduce it to my students to show them a much more interesting game that could be played with a checkers set.

I may love the idea of this one more than the actual game. Little seeds sprouting and fighting for room. It can take quite a long time to play out, but it has an epic scope and is fascinating to watch. This game feels like I want Go to feel.

Sorry, Alan. Something had to go. I love tile-laying games and I love *this* tile-laying game. However, when the opportunity to play a tile-laying game presented itself, there were others that I reached for first, and New England just drifted farther and farther away, like a lover leaving on a train. Farewell...farewell...

If it makes you feel any better, Sante Fe Rails made the new list.

And that's it, folks.

I'm having an increasingly difficult time integrating thematic imagery (corn, pilgrims, barns, etc.) with abstract game mechanisms (such as the clever but utterly unsullied-by-reality bidding mechanism in this game). I might have first noticed this problem, when I realized New England did nothing for me - even on the first playing.

Either I'm reaching my fill of clever mechanisms solely for the sake of cleverness, or my loved ones might soon need to spoon-feed me my ice cream.

Why, I ask myself, did Oasis seem fun, where New England did not?
