Sometimes I can't quite put my finger on what about a certain game I like, but I know I like it. Then some new game comes along that takes the one element I couldn't quite define and meshes it with other goodness and bits and stuff and junk. Before you know it, the new game has completely invalidated the existence of the previous game. It scratched the itch that the older game did -- but does it better, faster, neater, with nicer components or whatever other value added goodness they threw in there.

So here's a look at games that, when they came along, completely replaced an older game in your collection, or prevented another game from hitting the table because the new one simply outperformed the previous game. Once you see it working, you simply have no desire or need to go back to the previous game.

What do you think?
Have any games come along to turn other games in your collection obsolete?
What is it about the newer game that surpasses the previous game?
What did you do with the game wallowing in obsolescence?

Starfarers of Catan. It streamlined the rules. Kept play randomized, but simpler to set up. Featured better components. Had a friggin' expandable mothership. Retained the trading and resource managements. Played much, much quicker. I jettisoned Settlers into the dark vacuum of space after just one game of Starfarers.

Wizard! With the "take that" fun of slapping a Wizard down on someone's Ace of Trump, and the oodles of extra decision making, bluffing and second-guessing that comes with guesstimating tricks and jockeying for position with those 8 extra cards (4 Wizards, 4 Jesters), Wizard has become a staple of family gatherings ever since.

Thurn and Taxis, which does everyting TtR did, but better -- alleviating some of the luck of the draw problems with the role selection options and allowing a greater degree of control with the VP chips and ways you can approach the game, not to mention helping force and shape the tempo by requiring card play each turn.

We'll play ECEG if we've got 3+ people and want the same sort of push your luck Yahtzee style gameplay, but with great components and thankfully no bookkeeping! Or if we want a little head-to-head action, Maureen Hiron's Cosmic Cows offers the same sort of action with cute cow components and more direct contention of scoring pieces than Yahtzee.

Formula De. I miss the chariot/team management that Maximus offered, but Formula De has much, much simpler mechanics, while still retaining the excitement and feel of racing - and sports a huge variety of tracks, better components, lots of optional rules, and just the right amount of car customization to keep each player engaged.

But, I just felt that Pompeji out played Survive! I mean, they are basically the same...

Survive is about getting the most guys to safety.
Pompeji is about getting the most guys to safety.

Survive the island disappears
Pompeji the city disappears

In Survive! you can use sharks to eat the other players guys.
In Pompeji you use the lava to burn the other players guys.

But if you get some extra tokens, you can play 5 in Pompeji. That and the card setup and movement rules just make Pompeji more interesting to me.

...along cmae Warmachine!

We can play several battles in the time it took to just play one Warhammer game. Simpler mechanics yet more strategic options. Big steam-powered engines of destruction locked in mortal combat. Fewer miniatures per force, up and running for under $200 (and even under $50/player playing to starter boxes against each other which is great fun).

The pewter runs through my veins.

This has made Ancient Conquest obsolete. While the games have the same themes, the area movement of Chariot Lords blows away Ancient Conquests hex-based system. The fact that you can get reinforcements outside of those given you by the turn record sheet is a big improvement. The variable start order for each turn is an improement as well.

The first in the series of card driven impulse games (command only certain units based on the cards you play), this game had some complicated rules about generals that I thought were a bit off. I don't know if the game started being called the 'Command and Colors' system in the beginning, but that's the term I hear now in association with the last game in this group. The idea of fighting in certain sections certainly meshed with the civil war type of battle.

I never owned the game, but rather played my friend's quite a few times. It is OOP, and harder to come by than it's successors so I never bothered picking it up.

Very similar system, but now we've got tanks instead of cavalry. The infantry move a bit more. No generals, so that's nice. This game is as good or better than Battle Cry except in one sense: The idea of fighting on "flanks" and centers of a battle line isn't exactly the way WWII was fought. The command was much lower in the chain than 80 years previous, and the battlefield more fluid.

Still, if you don't think too hard about it, this game is as good or better than BC (in my opinion, for dessenting opinions, I'm sure you can see below...

I own this one, and play don't get to play it enough.

Third in the line, this really makes Battle Cry redundent unless you just like the civil war theme. The idea of flanks make more sense, the cards allow for much more random movements (lots of specialized cards allowing for movement with a group of troops, pincer moves, etc), you've got generals that boost morale, and rules that make a lot of sense about ignoring panic attacks by troops reinforced by their buddies.

I own this one as well, and although I think I'm getting milked for my money by GMT, I've got the expansions on order too.

Warrior Knights...

It plays on average an hour faster, the complexity of the order system (a niggly spot for some analysis paralysis budddies) is reduced, there's a more concrete diplomacy element, and generally seems a little less "stick-it-to-you" than AGOT.

My group is largely non-confrontational and prefers games that are around 3 hours. So this will see the table WAY more than AGOT. What did I do with AGOT? I sold it and the expansions and purchased some new toys that fit in with the group better.

But I MISS AGOT so... but I do love Warrior Knights for what it has brought to the table.
