Finnish Players' Picks 2006

Hi! Here we are again, listing the winners of the Finnish Players' Picks. It's an informal poll I came up with in 2003. Every Finnish gamer can give five to seven votes to different games they've enjoyed within the last year. This year we had 119 gamers giving almost 800 votes to a bunch of different games. Board Game: Caylus

46 votes. A bit of a surprise. The Finnish edition helped, but the game might've won even without it. Hard to say. I'm quite curious to see how Caylus will place next year: will it still be above Puerto Rico?

39 votes. Initially it was a real contest between Caylus and Puerto Rico (and many people voted for both), but in the end, the old champion (1st place in 2003 & 2004, 2nd place in 2005) had to go.

27 votes. Most voters voted for the Finnish edition specifically. I was expecting Ticket to Ride to win, but that didn't happen - still, top three as I expected.

23 votes. The voters were more hard-core this year, it seems, dropping Carcassonne (2nd 2003 & 2004, 1st 2005) to the fourth place.

Board Game: Samurai

21 votes. I am curious, if the Finnish edition helped here... Samurai did pretty much as well as last year.

18 votes. There's one thing common between the top six games: they all have Finnish edition published by Lautapelit.fi. I think that's a solid testament to their success as the number one game publisher in Finland, from gamer's point of view.

18 votes. A favourite, which lost some points from last year. The novelty has faded a bit, even with the expansions. Speaking of Commands & Colors, BattleLore should appear on the list next year, I think. C&C: Ancients got two votes this year; that's a minority game.

13 votes. A popular favourite that appeared two years ago with 13 votes, had 20 votes last year and now is back to 13.

13 votes. Second-best new game on the list. Not a surprise. This is also a future Lautapelit.fi Finnish release, so next year might see a bit of boost, actually.

12 votes. Has steady support, but isn't loved by the hard core crowd.

11 votes. Newer favourite. No match to its big brother, even though I think San Juan is definitely at least as good as Puerto Rico. The public disagrees.

10 votes. Old warhorse took a nose dive - this used to be a top-10 game, but I'm not sure it'll make top-20 next year. But maybe the new edition gives it a small boost? We'll see.

9 votes. I'm glad to see Age of Steam competing well with Railroad Tycoon; at first it seemed that the newcomer will beat the steady old favourite.
