Haven't we all played them? At least a few, right? The old Avalon Hill games were the standard in boardgaming for many many years. This list is a tribute to the old Avalon Hill. So which old Avalon Hill (non-Hasbro) game is your favorite? And how does it rank on this list? Comments welcome!

Games were entered based on their BGG manufacturer designation. I've attempted to show the AH edition wherever possible.

The best tactical WWII game I have ever played. I owned all the modules for this game and you could create any battle anywhere during WWII. The rules are quite extensive and complex. I havent played in years since I sold all the modules on Ebay. I still remember many of my favorite scenarios and battles though. Many fond memories....

From the designers who gave us the excellent Cosmic Encounter, this game seems to impress everyone. It conveys the factions and tension of Frank Herbert's first trilogy quite well and even people who are not familiar with the books seem to appreciate the scenario and atmosphere. It loses something with fewer players, but for six people it is just about unbeatable.

I would agree almost totally. The one problem is that it needs a full compliment of players, all of them reasonably proficient in playing the game to get the full experience of the game. It's good no matter what but it's great when played by experienced players.

Civilization - AH#837 - Designed by Francis Tresham. Originally release by Hartland Trefoil. Avalon Hill edition released in 1981.

Civilization proved very popular. A western extension map, expansion trade cards, and eventually Advanced Civilization were released in support of this game. Civilization is widely known as a "long" game, taking 4-8 hours to play.

I think you have low-balled the game length, at least with 7 players. 8 to 12 hours was my experience. Well worth it it every way.

This is the highest ranking one I own and have played. It has its problems, but it's my wife's absolute favorite wargame. And when it's a good game, it's a solid 10 hours of your life you'll have fond memories of forever.

Advanced Civ messes it all up. I do like the Eastern Expansion cards, though, if you have 7 players.

Advanced Civilization - AH#8372 - Designed by Francis Tresham & Bruce Harper. Released in 1991.

Advanced Civilization is an expansion for Civilization; and only works with the AH release of Civilization. Francis Tresham designed the base game. Bruce Harper was the primary designer for the "Advanced" rules, which really do not add significant complexity.

(This is my understanding.) This is not an expansion of Civ. This is revision of the original Civ game. They are independent of each other.

Sorry to correct you, but Advanced Civ is definitely an expansion. You can see the back of the box here, outlining what is included: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/12578

This is important to note, as anyone who buys Advanced Civ should know they need a copy of the Avalon Hill Civilization base game to use it. I've never seen the Hartland Trefoil, Gibsons, or French versions, but they are apparently incompatible with the AH Advanced Civ expansion.

While perhaps not to everyone's taste, AC has provided a number of unique, high quality gaming experiences for me. It has been my pleasure to be involved in at least half a dozen complete games with 5 or more players. I never won ... and I do not remember who won any of those games. What I do recall is the fun we had choosing our Civilizations, the conversation that piqued the veterans and encouraged the rookies, the intensity of the Trading, the strategy of our card buys, the tactics of population control, and the bleary eyes of the last two contenders.

I hosted most of those games. It was my son and his buddies (some of whom brought their girlfriends) that provided the necessary "players". Marathon games require correct nutrition, so we often started with bacon and eggs at the break of dawn. Almost everyone was around for lunch, and supper usually revolved around a spirited AAR.

If ever presented with a 7 Player FTF game in the future, I would jump at the chance. Especially with the AC expansion that includes the Iberian Peninsula ! For all of its negative press about game length, I honestly believe it is one of AH's finest games. I have had more pure fun playing AC than with any other AH game ... and I have played a lot of them !

I find getting Civ, in either form, on the table a real challenge anymore. But locally we have played Advanced Civ in living memory - and it is the preferred mode. Sadly the Advanced Civ expansion is rather expensive anymore. Original Civ was released in three different editions, at least - and is much easier to find and afford.

My number one. Played three or four copies of Up Front to bits, and sure, we may never have got the rules quite right, but it never really mattered. 501 City Fight once you (pretty much) understand the rules is where it's at. The expansions were okay, but nothing special; I was disappointed that they didn't include custom decks for terrain, but I suspect the cost would have been prohibitive. I wish Attack Sub could have been this good.

Runs fine in DosBox on a modern computer. As does their Advanced Civilization game.

I played this game once a week for about a year with a buddy of mine. I never got tired of it. Then ASL came out and me and my buddy got the rulebook and studied it for a week or so and we never played SL again. Some people liked SL better because you could mark the hexes for defensive fire and decide where you wanted to shoot after your opponent moved all his units. I preferred shooting as your opp moved. ASL has more "depth" in its rules and is better laid out. SL still holds a place in my heart as a very good game. Maybe some day I'll find an opponent and try it again.

A 2nd edition of this game was released by (I think) FFG in 2006. I think the 2nd edition isn't that different from the AH one, but I'm not sure.

Yes, the original game was published by Gibsons games in the UK. I have an old copy - the latest FFG edition certainly looks better, but by the standards of the (late eighties) day, the original wasn't a bad looking game.

General opinion is that this game works if all the players know its nuances (in particular, that certain players can expect to be ahead at different points in the game as each player's major nation comes into play at a different time) and are prepared to let it go the distance (it can play long).

If you can do that, you will re-live a period where the people of the Britain saw unparalleled upheaval and conquest, with incomers from Italy, France, Germany, Scandanavia and Ireland shaping the genetic and cultural make up of an island race that would punch well above it weight (in terms of population and country size) through to the current day.

One of the curious things about the game is that the AH edition was a copy of the Gibson's. That isn't curious in itself, but as Lewis Pulsipher explained it to me last summer, the X created by the four zone lines joining just south of the Scottish border was not on his original design, but was imposed by the British publisher and repeated by Avalon Hill. The new FFG edition has his original design which included only a passage between the SW and the NE.

Modified:

Original:

Of course many strategies had been based on how to get from SW to NE in two turns and that is no longer necessary.

in two editions, the second fixing the brown/purple piece confusion, and with equally crap rules. As with Kingmaker, you wanted to mix and match the best components from the TAHGC and British games for perfect gaming wonderment. Until the new one came along.

I always enjoyed playing this game with friends. Some of our games got rather interesting but we always had a good laugh/discussion afterwards. Something that always seems to happen after an AH game.

Between the original Ragnar Bros edition and the AH one, Gibsons Games in the UK also published a (for the time) fairly attractive edition.

This is the edition that I have in my collection, and have played quite a lot over the years, albeit not for a couple of years.

Good game, although like a lot of games of its era it can play long.

I see a lot of people say (OK it's anecdotal evidence) this game runs long - too long. I haven't played in some time but I don't recall it being overly long - certainly not compared to Adv Civ. Maybe 4 hours?

As to the re-release with the plastic minis - I thought they looked cheap and avoided that purchase...

As I recall, the box/rules suggest that the game takes 45 minutes per player. This always seemed accurate when I played the game, with four player games running about 3 hours.

*sigh* remember the days when we had enough time with our friends that we considered it a + when a game took longer to play?

The last time I played this was as Spain, and it was a blast. During a war with France in which they were winning, the Russian and Austrian players decided to mess with poor lil' Spain by taking some of my provinces in Italy from me. Little did they know I had been in negotiations with Britain, and two turns later the joint Anglo-Spanish fleet amphibiously invaded St. Petersburg. With tactics selections we needed a roll of 5 or better, 5 or better, and then six to have any shot of defeating the Russian garrison and capturing the city.

Three rolls later - 5, 6, 6 - there were Brits and Spaniards in St. Petersburg and the nearest Russian army was in the German states. You've never seen someone SO angry as that Russian player was, and I don't think I've ever had so much fun.

Never underestimate the fun of playing the little guy sometimes.

I'd love to see Kremlin get a modern makeover - perhaps by Fantasy Flight or someone who can really make it look as good as it plays. This game deserved a lot more popularity than it got, and I think it was held back by the somewhat amateurish graphics. It's a blast to play - everyone I've ever introduced to it has enjoyed it immensely.

Bill Crenshaw's sequel, Manifest Destiny, is way better, much smoother (less paperwork etc.), quicker playing and better themed. I sold my copy of AoR for a nice price after MD made it obsolete from my own gaming perspective.

Although I do like the occasional game of Manifest Destiny, it's not coming near the height on which Age of Renaissance is residing, IMHO.
I can see people like it for its relative quickness and lesser paperwork, but 'better themed' seem to be far from it. Like Michael already said, taking the Rockies with ProSports doesn't really make sense.
I think the theme for Age of Renaissance is quite strong, where cards and advances actually make sense in the advantage they provide...

I've recently learned this game, and it is awfully good - after 3 plays I think I am ready to compete next time. Thanks for the Manifest Destiny tip - already ordering.

Yup, this is a good one.

Best feature is using magic to flip a tile and change the road net.

After 25 years we still point to each other and yell "Bezerker" !!!

Greatest game ever of the Fantasy type. No matter how many times you've played it, it's never enough. I just wish more of my friends could understand the rules. Thank god for Realmspeak.

Still have my copy that I bought in 1979. Damn I'm gettin' old!

My first disagreement here. The rule book is long and tedious and the combat rules were in the first edition impossible to understand, by the time they re-wrote the rulebook my friends had moved on to other things...(Magic Realm)

Originally released, I think, by Jedko Games (John Edwards' company) in Australia.

This is a *great* game, by the way. One of my favorites.

It was originally, and concurrently released with revised rules by Jedko.

This still hits our table 2-3 times a year. Take a look at my turn summary player aide here on the Geek. It catches the little bits of chrome and pulls them together in one place

Re-released by L2 Design Group several years ago, beautiful production values. Additionally, L2 released "Russia Besieged" which supposedly cleaned up some of the "issues" with the original.

This list has taken some considerable amount of time to build. Folly, perhaps. But here it is for your perusal. Avalon Hill games were the gold standard in American gaming for years. I played a lot of these games in bygone days.

Nowadays we have many more games to select from, and old AH games have either been cast aside, forgotten, or possibly updated with better editions or refinements. Charles Roberts games were innovative for 1961, but are now outdated and "old hat" to most wargamers. Likewise games that followed from AH now also show their age, and have declining fan bases.

So why did I build this list? I guess I am just a little soft-hearted towards what AH represented to gaming in my youth. I have been enjoying playing some of AH's very first games in the past year. They are largely a type of game without an audience anymore. But I and my playing partner feel there is some worth in seeing where the ConSim category of games sprang from. Likewise, I feel older AH strategy games (non-wargames) had some value.

So I wondered, How do AH games stack up against modern BGG opinion? Well this list demonstrates this. The numbers will change over time, but a notable number of AH games still are listed in the BGG Top 100. But some of my favorite AH games are not so highly ranked. And a few have received so few ratings to have not yet be ranked.

I hope you might enjoy flipping through this list and seeing games you may love; or games you had almost forgotten you ever played. I encourage readers to rate the games they remember, and if you like, leave a comment about them on this list.

Great list. Brings back lots of memories to when TAHGC was king. I made the mistake when computers got popular of selling most of my games and after realizing that they were 2 different beasts and playing a game on a computer was just not the same I had to buy several back again. Thanks to EBay that was possible. Miss The General and Sports Replay though.

I decided to limit this list to just the games released under the "classic" Avalon Hill. In part, this list is about nostalgia. The new Avalon Hill is a completely different company, and has very little to do with what preceeded it. One advantage to limiting this list to the "old" Avalon Hill is that it need not be constantly maintained.

Just an interesting note: both Battle Cry and Betrayal were in development at the old AH before it was sold.
