Around this time of year, many BGG users are getting their first look at some of the new Fall 2006 releases. This list is a place to collect everyone's first impressions of the new games. Joe Huber did a list like this a year or two ago, so I credit him with the idea.

The Rules

Please only rate games you have played. Please rate them even if you've only played once. These are just initial impressions, subject to change. Additional comments are welcome, but not required.

+ means positive first impression
0 means neutral first impression
- means negative first impression

You may also indicate ++ for games that you think are particularly outstanding, but these votes will be counted the same as regular + votes.

I will regularly update the results with running totals.

Let me know if you'd like any games added to the list. I'm not allowing public additions so that I can update the totals under each game entry.

Edit 11/15/06: For reasons of manageability, I've not included wargames in the list. This list is for the sort of games you might expect to see at the Essen fair.

Quick and fun card game. The choice between taking more shares and placing an 11 or 12 share price card to end the round is is nice and tough.

A fun card game. I will have to admit that my opinion may be biased by the fact that I know the designer and was a blind play tester.

This game is light. But perfect for a social evening.
It plays quick and has a built in learning curve.
Think of it as Honey Bears for adults.

It really didn't do it for me, I was far too analytical and played it completely detached from the theme. But around me, I heard a few families with children having lots of fun with it. The look and feel also suggests that this is a light game aimed exactly at that audience. As such: it is spot on and a good step up from children's games.

Board art is horrible: why not more of the box's style of art on the board? Very abstract, so not my cup of tea, but seems pretty well made.

- I really want to like this game. But is is too abstract, and the rules are too confusing. It's not: I am transporting this cloth to the harbour; it's: I'm expanding my cubes onto an adjacent tile, and now I get two additional ones because I am adjacent on two other tiles, or something like that. Is that fun? A challenge? I don't see it.

0 (almost a +), better than Baloon Cup, but feels so derivative I can't justify the +. Certainly, drawing a lucky polarity switch switch at the right time will help considerably (almost too much).

I played a prototype of this and enjoyed it greatly. I thought it was very clean and had some interesting dynamics that would change depending on how the game played out.

+ Our first game was crazy and chaotic since we were all just learning the rules. By the end of the game we were realizing what constituted good moves. I love the slight real-time element.

I like this game as an advanced multiplayer mancala, which happens so little in the boardgame world it seems, even though mancala is a very solid, strategy-wise, family of games. There's a learning curve as in many mancalas if you've never played a mancala, but when you get the hang of it, it's an interesting game. +

Played twice. Doesn't really offer me any interesting decisions, and there's nothing else to draw me back. Inoffensive but lifeless game. I do like the dice-governed action selection mechanism, but that's not enough.

Good list!! but where is Aqua Romana?

Gunnar, thanks. I didn't add Aqua Romana because it has been out for a year now in Germany and the U.S. Perhaps the Swedish edition is new this year?

Some games that probably should be added:

Don Peperoni
(- Way too much littering of blind bids, with blind rock paper scissors over-rides.)

Snake Lake
(- Good programing game for kids, not much there for adults. Too much randomness with the apples, mushrooms and cards. Also includes a lose your turn mechanic.)

Los Mampfos
(0 Silly fun. A nice memory game with great bits, but is probably too long and certainly too expensive for what it offers.)

Truffel-Schnuffel
(0 Absurd kids game where you check mushrooms in the mirror with your magnetic pig nose. Fun, but I can't imagine playing this more than once).

Zoff im Huhnerhof
(+ Nice Kids game, wonderful movement and scoring. There is a likelyhood that you could in fact get good at this, in the meantime it is fun just to pitch feed and move your chickens around. Great seamless scoring system.)

Terra Nova
(+ Lovely Gerrymandering game. Great sense of movement. Tense moments as you try to weigh your options)

Idol Quest
(- Take some clever ideas inspired a bit by abstracts try to streamline the old MB concepts into a eurostreamlined American themed game then add a Roll & Move mechanic and random cards to throw any fun out the window)

+ (barely) I really like the game, but the control on the plungers is very difficult. Perhaps if you put Carom's anti-friction powder in them.

I imagine this game would be great flicking pucks on mylar.
