Ultimate Optimum # of Players List (BGG Top 288) RESULTS SO FAR...

***FINAL UPDATE*** Aldie and friends have FINALLY implemented a number # of players voting system into each game page! So this list is FINALLY obsolete. I'd like to thank everyone for commenting, contributing, voting, and giving me support when I just wanted to give up. Oh happy day! And there was much rejoicing...
Back in October I created a geeklist (22nd highest rated geeklist of all time!) to compile votes from fellow BGG'ers on the top BGG games, regarding where they play "optimally", that is, with what # of players a game plays best with. It was created as a thinly veiled request that voting on # of players be added to the BGG database. You can see that list here and vote yourself: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/17016 (Please follow the directions when voting or your posts will be deleted)
A few months and a few thousand votes later I am creating this list as a companion list to summarize the results. This list is broken down by # of players. So first you will see games to play with one player, with two, three, etc. Within these groups you will see a few categories. These are: "_ PLAYERS ONLY", "BEST WITH _ PLAYERS", "EXCELLENT WITH _ PLAYERS", "GOOD WITH _ PLAYERS".
"_ PLAYERS ONLY" includes a list of games (up to rank 288) that play with only that # of players. So for example "ONE PLAYER ONLY" will be a list of solitaire games, "TWO PLAYERS ONLY" will be a list of 2-player games (like chess). (Games in this category were not voted on, as they are strictly with that # of players, there is no range).
"BEST WITH _ PLAYERS" is a list of games that were voted highest with that # of players (only the highest # of players is included as best). So for example, Tigris & Euphrates has 100% approval with 4 players, 93% with 3 and 37% with 2; therefore T&E is said to be "best with 4 players". For every game, the # of players with the highest percentage is included.
"EXCELLENT WITH _ PLAYERS" is a list of games with an approval percentage higher than 75%.
"GOOD WITH _ PLAYERS" is a list of games with an approval percentage higher than 50%.
Within each list, the games are sorted by BGG rank. So for example, you want to find a good 2-player only game. Look at the "2 PLAYERS ONLY" list and they will be sorted from top to bottom.
I have also colour-coded each game by its weight (which is a measure of a game's length, complexity, etc). I tried to split the # of games in the top 700 evenly into 5 groups and I came up with this: RED is the colour of HEAVY games with a weight greater than 3.25 YELLOW is the colour of MEDIUM-HEAVY games with a game weight greater than 2.7, up to 3.25 BLUE is the colour of MEDIUM games with a weight greater than 2.3, up to 2.7 PURPLE is the colour of LIGHT-MEDIUM games with a weight greater than 1.85, up to 2.3 GREEN is the colour of LIGHT games with a weight less than or equal to 1.85
Here is a sample list of games for each category, so you can figure out where you fit in:
HEAVY: Go Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition Age of Steam Chess Civilization Caylus War of the Ring Titan Tigris & Euphrates Reef Encounter Java Dune Goa Diplomacy A Game of Thrones
MEDIUM-HEAVY Magic: The Gathering CCG Descent: Journeys in the Dark Louis XIV Axis & Allies Railroad Tycoon Torres Age of Mythology History of the World Shogun (Samurai Swords) Tikal YINSH Dungeon Twister DVONN Vinvi Risk 2210 A.D.
MEDIUM: Santiago Tichu Lord of the Rings Settlers of Catan Card Game Acquire Union Pacific Aladdin's Dragons RoboRally St. Petersburg Web of Power Modern Art Starship Catan Shadows over Camelot Ra Attika
LIGHT-MEDIUM Lord of the Rings - The Confrontation Betrayal at House on the Hill Mystery of the Abbey Othello Battle ry Alhambra Colossal Arena Citadels Backgammon Hare and Tortoise HeroQuest Jambo Scotland Yard Clans Kahuna
LIGHT: Werewolf Mamma Mia! TransAmerica For Sale Great Dalmuti Guillotine Coloretto Taboo Liar's Dice Category 5 Can't Stop No Thanks! Pit Apples to Apples PitchCar
So, you might be saying to yourself "But what the heck can I use this list for?" Well, I see 2 main uses: a shopping list, and to answer "I have 3 friends coming over, what the heck should we play?" Just go to the # of players that you are interested in and look until you find something interesting to you.
Of the top 288, many of them have not yet "graduated" to this list because they require more votes. You can vote for these games on my companion list Plays best with 2? 3? 4? 173? You tell me! Ultimate Optimum # of Players List (BGG Top 288) http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/17016
Here is the full list of games up to 288 which can be voted on (and their corresponding page #'s). The ones which are bolded need more votes! The ones that are HUGE have no votes and I urge you all to vote for those (but you can vote on any game you wish!)

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far. Remember, this is a work in progress and it will only improve as votes are cast, games graduate with enough votes to the results list, and new games are added. I would like to eventually include the top 700 games...but hopefully...long before then...a similar functionality is added to the BGG database which would make these lists obsolete!

I love how you can find good games for each range of players. You can't look for games playable with X players and good with that number as well on bgg advanced search isn't it?
