Are YOU an Iron Gamer?
Iron Gamers are above the hype. Iron Gamers know when to choose games they like and when to pass them by. Iron Gamers won't let themselves be bent by their desires. Iron Gamers are honest with themselves and others about Being Iron Gamers. And Iron Gamers are not snide about it either.
Here are the rules and FAQ, which will be kept up to date as questions and comments are raised here:
http://bagginsunderthehill.blogspot.com/2007/01/iron-gamer-r...
Important rules update Jan. 6th: Weird Expansions. See the last FAQ question on expansions.
Second Important rules update Jan. 7th: Scoring, Thrifts, and Gifts. Summary: you can buy a 2nd game in a month for a -3 point penalty, and a 2nd expansion in a month for a -2 point penalty, but a 3rd game or 3rd expansion you buy yourself knocks you out of the game. You now win if your score is 0 or positive at the end of the year. Thrift store purchases DO count. Change: Gifts DO count, with special penalty rules in the FAQ.
Third Important rules update Jan. 8th: Compensation copies/reviewer copies. If you are an official reviewer, official playtester, official demo person, and/or game designer, the review copies and final production compensation copies of games that you receive don't count.
Fourth rules update Jan. 9th: What counts as a play and RPGs. For solitaire game information, see the FAQ at the rules link above. RPGs do not count (despite there being a fuzzy overlap between RPGs and particular board games; I just want to focus on BGG-classified board games).
There is scoring involved, but that is more for yourself than to compete with others.
Qualifications to sign up:
- You will be honest. - You have not yet bought more than the Iron Gamer restriction this month. If you have bought 2 games and/or 2 expansions, you start off with a penalty, and you will have to make it up somehow by not purchasing games in a month (see rules for details). - You sign up before January 13th, 2007.
If you have what it takes to be an Iron Gamer and qualify, sign up here by adding a game to this list along with a comment! You may want to use the game id of your hot game this month, but you can use any you like. Do not add an item unless you are really going to be an Iron Gamer, please, but you may comment on our insanity all you like.
A tip: if you are blogging this and are able to, use the "Hot 10 Games" in your profile and the BGG web widget to track that on your blog! Remove Hot 10 Game entries as you buy them and replace them with more! You do NOT have to buy a Hot 10 game on your list at the end of the month, you are completely free to choose.
And you can add links to your blog as well below, whether you are tracking or not.
I will add a new GeekList for Iron Gamer each month so that people can add their chosen game and expansion, and bow out gracefully if they have decided to be sane again and go back to buying games by the heart, as nature intended.
May the best Iron Gamer win!
Note: I'm pretty realistic in that I and maybe one or two others are the only ones who sign up. That doesn't matter.

My avatar was cross-stitched by my wife, Robin! She's cool like that, not to mention being one helluva ASL opponent.

All right, sign me up.
In six months we have to move, so we'll be needing a little extra cash for the expenses. By participating in Iron Gamer 2007 I will be able to make sure the finances aren't drained on a binge buy at either Boards & Bits or the FLGS. I will have something which keeps me in check.
I list Drakon here because it was the last game I got for myself. However, I used a Christmas gift certificate from the FLGS to get the game, so I am still eligible for my one game this month.

Sign me up, this is a great idea for helping me with incentive to play and watching what I am purchasing because it is shiny, and what I am purchasing in the hopes that I can play. I am using runebound because I received it for christmas, and all those expansions are calling to me to own for completeness sake. This isn't going to be easy, but it's going to be fun to try. Now I also have a way to cojole the wife into playing. "but you gotta play with me honey, or I will lose points."
Not blogging it yet, but that might not be a bad idea. I know I will use the logging play feature on BGG to track what i've played. not sure how to track my purchases. other than your monthly list. probably best. sorry thinking out loud now. Sign me up please though.

Stop the Insanity!
When two out of three games go into the closet without a play within three months, you know there is a problem.
I played Factory Fun at BGG.con and it represents new games that I want, but have not 'gotten around to getting'.
How about if we add comments to our entries here with the date and what we got? That way we can see what others are doing (or create another site for group communication).
How about gift certificates carried over from 2006?
Can I buy a Hilinski board each month and trade each one for 6 games? Just kidding.
Ava, Thanks for setting this up.

Having gone from 1 to 85 games in six months time, I guess it's time for me to stop a bit and smell the roses (er, play the games, that is). Plus, my wife is starting to wonder just exactly how much I have spent. I just ordered Liberte and Elephant in a Porcelain Shop from Funagain, and I was wondering, as I'm not much of an expansion buyer, if I can pass off a card game (Elephant) as my "expansion" for the month?
Thank God I had 8 P500 orders since November... that should keep me sane
(Oh, BTW, who do we bug about an Iron Gamer Geekbadge?).

Count me in. I've got a few games on my event horizon, but they're all out of print (El Grande, Age of Steam, Caylus) except possibly for THIS seemingly remarkable Knizia title, I totally abhor expansions in general, and am trying to get my game group together to play once I'm done with this play I'm doing (through January to the 2nd of Feb.)
I tend to solitaire play my games a lot, presumably to prepare for game nights (but really because, well, I have NO FRIENDS!)
Also, I've done my bit of bingeing just before Christmas (1870 and Alexandros), and won't be in a hurry to buy anything for a while.
So, I think I'm a natural iron gamer. Put me in please. Just in case my avatar & stuff doesn't show up, as it didn't seem to in the "item preview," this is gary_webster from Denver. If it does, I'm still him.

I like this idea of limiting purchase to allow time to actually play the game. Plus, Hilary can't say that games are for me when he breaks his iron gaming pledge.

This is the game I got yesterday to play with our new gaming buddies! I finally get to play a few of the BGG classics. Last week, we played our first game Settlers of Catan that our gaming buddies brought over.

I am much more leaning towards membership in the Marshmallow Gamer Club.
If someone set that up-I'd definately be in.

A special note to concerned game designers, manufacturers and retailers: I pledge to personally do what I can to pick up the slack and obtain as many new games as possible in 2007.

For everyone else---last chance, last call, to join the Iron Gamers!
I will be talking to Aldie if I can about an Iron Gamer geekbadge, although I am not sure yet about a design. (I'm thinking a small anvil.)
