Iron Gamer is just starting this January. The finish line is distant---December 31st, and every Iron Gamer must hold themselves to their resolution: less games bought, more games played!

A Question for the Iron Gamers:

What is your WORST temptation when it comes to games? You may add an extra frivolous non-choice item for the purposes of answering this question. ;)

This is the first of a monthly series of Geeklists about the choices of said Iron Gamers, along with a different little activity each month. Please do not add items unless you are an Iron Gamer, I will probably remove them, BUT you may comment on our insanity as much as you like.

------------

A very short rules recap:

1) Each month, an Iron Gamer may buy up to one standalone game and one expansion without losing points.
2) If you don't buy a standalone game, you get +2 points. If you don't buy an expansion, you get +1 point.
3) If you buy a second standalone game, you get -3 points. If you buy a second expansion, you get -2 points.

Goal: end up with 0 or more points at the end of the year.

Many exceptions and special cases covered at http://bagginsunderthehill.blogspot.com/2007/01/iron-gamer-r... (soon to be updated with rules about promotional items).

"Temptation is all around me!" -- Hilary Hartman

My weakest point when it comes to games would have to be collectible games. Why? I'm not sure. I don't really like opening boosters; in fact, I think it's bothersome and wish I had a booster-unwrapping-and-sorting fairy. Probably I'm attracted to them because they, in their myriad ways of tons of special cards or figures or tiles or whatever, provide a sense of theme and, in the best cases, a sense of world. Only please let it not be a cheesy world like it was through a lot of the Urza block.

These days I'm learning Japanese, which opens up a whole new area of CCGs to start looking at.

And of course, there's the collectible Wizard Kings. Wizard Kings hits up on my normal interests without, originally, being a CG; now that it is, well... I better stay far away.

Thus Iron Gamer.

I'm not even sure I want a game in January right now.... there's only one expansion I really want to get that I haven't gotten in 2006.

Collectible Wizard Kings may be a temptation for me also. I am just so curious about how they made a block game collectible.

We have a huge collection of D&D minis and remember the days where we would each get one every week or so while we were playing regularly.

Expansion:

Ah, Runebound. I am on the search for a few type of games, trying to find the best one. This is, of course, impossible, but I persist anyways.

In the realm of adventure games, I have stumbled wide and far: Dungeoneer, Return of the Heros, Middle Earth CCG (much more adventure game than just a CCG), Lord of the Rings (I think of it as an abstracted adventure game), Runebound (1st and 2nd editions), and Prophecy. I managed to get a hold of Magic Realm and will one day work it all out.

They all have their ups and downs, but one look at the BGG database will tell you that Runebound is certainly the most prolific in terms of expansions. And adventure games live and die on variety, usually. Runebound has also evolved over time, and for the better.

Sand of Al-Kalim looks to be a much more flexible variant of Runebound, and while I never imagined I would get this expansion, here I am, getting it. I think part of this is because LotR: Battlefields hasn't come out, but after some further examination, I've decided I actually would be happy with this expansion. It might even (argh) replace the rest of my Runebound collection, it seems rather sleek rules-wise, but we'll see.

I suffer from this one. And this is where Iron Gaming truly helps me. I have a completist personality. One of the reasons I am glad I never got seriously into CCG's. I made a couple of forays, but was never hooked. But, on the other hand I am heavily into Heroscape, which while not collectible, can be expensive. But Iron Gaming helps curb that in some areas. For example Munchkin. My family loves munchkin, and I love playing with my family. We have the original, and 3 of the 4 expansions (plus dice and blender). We also have munchkin fu, and Munchkin Impossible. I am drawn towards buying the rest, just to have the whole collection. But...when you think about it, They are all pretty much the same game. All buying more versions and expansions does is increase the shuffling chore. I am fairly certain, eventually more munchkin will creep in slowly. But Iron Gaming helps to choose between completeness and fun.

Also known as Ruse & Bruise. I have mostly new or cheap games on my want list. I like Return of the Heroes as well as Citadels/Castle, so this was a pretty easy choice when it appeared at a good price. I gather some of the translations are counter intuitive, so I see a playing aid in my future. There is an easy fix to the concerns about luck, and that is to just increase the hand size. Play with all 36 in your hand if you want to.

Not sure why this was the one I chose, other than that two were available and I think the game is a good family game that will get played for quite a while, as it has card play and some clever moves, but not tons of tension.

I WANT THIS. I want more Americanified Euro designs, with cool theme, and a solid 2-3 hour Civ game.

I had January planned out. and therefore wasted it hoping that a game publisher would live up to it's promises. I spent a desperate last ditch effort in a game store wishing to buy something. Due to family pressure, and poor selection, it came down to bang. Unfortunately the 3 month rule was brought to mind. Bang is on my list this year. But, I am waiting closer to the annual summer men's camp-out, because the audience is more promising than a wife and teenage daughter.

There is a new packaging of Bang in a bullet shaped tin - it will include previous expansions and some other goodies, so it might be worth waiting for that.

I feel silly adding this to the list, but it was the only game I intentionally purchased this month. I had it when it was originally released those many decades ago and lost it in the sands of time, so when I found it available at an online store--still in shrink--I had to have it!

Hmmm.

The debate around the house still rages on whether or not my wife got this game on her own accord, and whether or not I violated the Iron Gamer rules by telling her to go ahead and pick it up at the FLGS during our last visit several weeks ago. We had discussed buying it before but never had any inclination. I did not keep her from buying the game when she held it up and asked my opinion.

So, I figured she bought the game, which did not violate the Iron Gamer rules. She believes I did break them by okaying the purchase.

I will abide by whatever decision my fellow Iron Gamers decide.

And my wife has since joined Iron Gamers.

Okay, since this is my game, I will answer the question here. My biggest temptation is looking through Boards and Bits site and ordering a bunch of smaller games. Since shipping is only ten dollars for the whole order, it just seems a little silly to order just one.

But I do have to say, all the unplayed games in the house and school starting up help me to not purchase a new game.
