Games that Are Worth Purchasing Solely for Playing Two-Player, but Are Capable of Supporting More Players

I'm in the common situation of liking board games, not having the time and energy to join a game group, and playing mostly with my wife. There are a large number of great games made for two players, but usually they are smaller in scope than games that can accommodate more players.

This list is of games that are playable by 2 or more, but are worth purchasing solely to play as a two player game. If it does not "officially" support 2, but has a two player variant that makes it a worthwhile purchase, that is just fine. I don't want any games that only support two on the list, as those are obviously worth purchasing just for two players.

To be clear, for purposes of this list, it does not matter how the game plays with more than two players. It does not matter how many players it is "best" with. What matters is whether the game is worth purchasing only to be played with two players.

Other geeklists that are similar are here, but none are as comprehensive as this aims to be:

A particularly good list is here, with much more in depth commentary:

A geeklist with 2-player variants is here, which includes some of the variants discussed below:

Feel free to comment or add more games. I've added games that I think are worth purchasing just for two, and games that I haven't played, but appear from forum comments and other geeklists to be worthwhile.

This is my favorite two player game. Its worth purchasing this and all the expansions especially for two.

I even don't play Carcassonne with more than two players any more. You cannot have a plan with more players, it's very much pure luck. But with two players it's great.

Two player Carc = excellent.
Three player Carc = good.
Four or more player Carc = dreadful.

Just to be completely clear...Carcassonne - The Castle is 2 player only :)

That's funny, I've heard this a number of times, but I find this one too dry with 2. I see how there's much more strategy to be had with only 2, but it's the chaos that I enjoy with 3-4. Each to their own.

The secret, we think, to a 2-player game is to be fiercely competitive. My wife and I are constantly on guard and attacking each other with our tile placements. When we play against each other, every move is followed by a wince and a smile. (or evil grimace)

Looking back, there was ONE 2-player game of this that didn't work for us.. our first. We were playing nice, since the rules were still a bit unfamiliar. Play nice in this game and you get squashed.

For vanilla Carc, or even with many expansions, I agree. But play only with the Princess and Dragon expansion, and four player Carc suddenly becomes a lot of fun, and a fundamentally different kind of game.

Actually, in our group, we only play with 3+ players, preferably 4 or 5. We tend to stretch the game out the entire evening (as we have almost all the expansions) and everyone has a great time socializing. The diplomacy angle (when to cooperate, when to try to steal) is completely gone with only 2 players. For this reason, my wife and I also find the 2 player game too vindictive and stressful. :)

My girlfriend and I play this a lot together, and we're coming to the conclusion that it plays better faster. For example, pick up your tile on the other's turn so you can spend that time figuring out what you're going to do. This simple tactile change keeps us more engaged, since we're each thinking of what we'll do with a specific tile rather than some "tile in general."

For just two players, I wouldn't buy this. Carc: The Castle is much better for 2 players.

For me, only base set, Discovery, or Castle are worthy.

I prefer 3-4 players, but have played with as many as 8.

Can be played with more players, but the long duration with more makes it a good gmae for two.

We enjoyed it two player, the only (very minor) gripe being that some of the special spaces are essentially useless with just two.

Probably moves the emphasis towards building faster versus being sneaky too.

Caylus is a great game, but just for two? I think it lacks a little bit. "I have one more set of cubes than you, hah, hah." If you really like it with more, then you'll still like it with two, but I think it's pretty clear that the game was designed with 3-5 in mind.
