Just some silly (and stupid!) stuff. I hope you enjoy the list. It is best enjoyed with a freshly-brewed cup of almond mocha mint coffee.

Another session report that the 'modders rejected. Sometimes I don't understand what what criteria they are using. Anyway...

I thought this game looked really fun until I played it. I had seen the movie many years ago, and let me warn you, the movie version is much funnier. The funniest part of this game was when we were rolling to see who goes first, and Tom and I kept getting the same number. It was like four or five times in a row, and it really got comical after the first couple of times. We laughed so hard we almost peed our pants. Then the game got a lot less funny when we actually started to play. In the movie version, there was good stuff like, "Ah, but the servant waits, while the master baits." That's comedy. In the game version, nothing but unfunny stuff like "epochs."

The realism in the game struck me. After I had created my first skyscraper, the alley behind my building started to smell a little like pee. Wow! I knew Andreas Seyfarth was good, but not that good.

I am not a huge fan of this game, but it does work far better than the other "Balloon Cup" product line. That, you may remember, was a poorly-conceived piece of protective athletic equipment. When it loudly popped on the baseball or soccer field, it really added insult to injury.

I used to LOVE Sorry. It was all about screwing people for me. I'd get a little pleasure every time I sent someone's pawn back to start. My family, sensing my growing socio-pathic tendencies, created a gaming "intervention." They slowly brought me into cooperative games, such as Break the Safe. I learned to love games like that, and now I don't feel the need to have to metaphorically "screw my neighbor" every game I play. I've gotten into meatier co-ops than Safe as well, such as Arkham Horror. I guess there is a valuable life lesson to be learned here: Better Safe than Sorry.

In 1962, the entire line of "Fascination" games (Fascination (The Electric Maze Game), Fascination Checkers, and Fascination Pool), as well as Hoppity and Hot Spot, were on the verge of becoming the games of choice in the lucrative American market. Hot Spot was nearing an NBC game show deal, and Hoppity was to debut as a Saturday morning cartoon show. All of this, however, would never happen.

One year previous, Sid Sackson put together a group of ne'er-do-wells consisting of Johnny Meeples, "Battle" Laurie, "Fearsome" Freddy Floors, and Joey "Big" Boggle. With sufficient muscle behind him, he was able to change the gaming landscape in the United States for decades to come. The producer of Hoppity "accidently" fell on a rake, lurched backwards hitting his head on a shovel, stumbled five miles out of town, and died in a ditch along a dirt road. Hot Spot was pulled after its first episode, when an anonymous tip (later traced to Floors' flat in Philly) called the integrity of the game show into question (The "spot" was far cooler than the game show's brass portrayed to the American public). After a U.S. grand jury investigation, the show's producers were imprisoned and, naturally, the game was dropped by Parker Brothers. Joey Boggle published a review in the New York Times, disparaging the Fascination trilogy, claiming that the only "fascinating" thing about them was the name. Boggle's witty retort resonated with the masses, and sales of Fascination games fell dramatically. With a large market niche to fill, and plenty of Americans craving games, Sackson published Acquire in 1962. He followed that up with Sleuth and Venture, and the rest, as we say, is history.

historical note: Joey Boggle soon turned his clever witticisms into greating cards. He got out of his life of crime and started the Shoebox Greetings branch of Hallmark.

This has been another "One Minute in Gaming History."

In my highly unanticipated follow-up to my unexceptional Carcassonne: Bacon Edition item, I have another retheme that you might be interested in.

Go: Uncomfortable High School Dance Party Edition

With sales of Go declining among the 12 - 18 year old demographic in the United States, Pressman Toy Co. has created a new, hip version of this classic game, Go: Uncomfortable High School Dance Party Edition. The rules are the same as classic Go.

Each player receives high-quality wood dancers in his or her color. With space on the dance floor limited, players try to gather their clique of friends to make the biggest dance circles. More people in your dance circle, as well as more space created on the disco floor, will make you the coolest kid in the gym! If one clique is able to completely surround the opposing player's dancers, those inside a non-friendly dance circle will start to feel self-conscious about their attire, or possibly their acne, and leave the dance floor. When there are no more legal places to get your groove on, players score points by counting their hip-hoppers on the dance floor as well as the disco squares "captured" inside their circle. The player with the most points wins the title of Prom King or Prom Queen!

Go: Uncomfortable High School Dance Party Edition: DELUXE includes a audio CD with covers of popular dance tunes, and is well worth the $54.99 price tag.
