A fascinating aspect of gaming is interacting with the various personalities of your opponents. I have attempted to identify and list many of these personality traits here.

None of this is meant to be an "attack" on anyone of course. Some of these traits could certainly be applied to me, and there's probably at least one of them that could be associated with any gamer. We even have microbadges for some of them! There are obviously some overlapping characteristics, and various attributes that play off of one another.

I've tried to keep this list original, but I must admit that I've been influenced by other conversations I've heard on this topic of personalities. I'm sure some of you with more gaming experience can come up with additional "gamer types" to add, with some interesting stories to go along with them.

I started with the intention of listing ways to interact and deal with a person that displays the given trait, but thought I'd leave the suggestions to you after the first several entries. Please tell us what worked for you.

The “I Would Have Won If Only...” Guy

Other Nicknames: The Runner-Up, Mr.Defensive
Favorite Games: Most Euros, and any game that usually ends up with close scores
Characteristics: This guy feels an urgent need to rationalize and explain each factor that contributes to his loss after the game is over. He usually has the "victim mentality" and honestly believes that he really would have won the game if it hadn't been for one or two minor obstacles. He's the one that will lose a game 100-0 and then tell you, "you know, that was a pretty close game - if you add your score to my score, we would have tied".

The Lone Ranger

Other Nicknames: Last Teammate Chosen, The Traitor
Favorite Games: Anything that doesn't involve teammates or alliances
Characteristics: It's not that he's necessary malicious - he just tends to forget that he's playing on your team. He doesn't "get" co-operative games, and avoids even temporary alliances. Even in a Lord of the Rings game, he doesn't care if Sauron wins as long as he's the last man standing. This guy often has a long history of 2-player wargaming that he just can't shake. Don't call "Tichu" if he's your partner. And if you're the Bang! deputy to his sherriff, don't expect to survive.

The Cheater

Other Nicknames: The Card Creaser, Mr. Win-At-All-Costs
Favorite Games: Card games, especially ones that use a regular deck
Characteristics: This guy will do whatever it takes to come out on top. Whether it's using signals to communicate with his partner, stashing an Ace up his sleeve, or simply looking into the bag of tiles before he draws one out, this guy is bad news, and he usually can't be fixed with a quick cure.
How to Handle: 40 lashes, and simply never play with him again.

Mr.Quit and Leave Early

Other Nicknames: Too-Tired, Mr. Fun-for-the-First-5-Minutes
Favorite Games: He gravitates toward the longer games where people have to invest a lot of time
Characteristics: This fellow strikes without warning 2/3 of the way through your game of Caylus and mentions that "right, gotta go home and let my dog outside", or "he can't stay awake and needs some sleep cuz he only slept 9 hours last night". On a good day, he may think of you enough to volunteer that your 5-year-old son take over his spot in the game.
How to Handle: Keep him with your 5-year-old son playing Go Fish.

The Dynamic Theme Changer

Other Nicknames: Dr. Who, The History-Challenged Thespian
Favorite Games: Anything dripping with theme
Characteristics: This is the person who's playing a game about the Old West but keeps putting on a pirate accent and calling the guns swords. Sometimes it's because he's offended by the original theme (e.g. can't stand the colonists in Puerto Rico), but usually it's because he thinks another theme fits better or would be more fun, at least for that day. This person's personality can overlap with the role-player, but he's less about acting and more about calling the shrimp in Reef Encounter the Cosmic Defenders of the Galaxies.
How to Handle: Let him have his fun. You may not be amused, but your kids will probably be.

The Transparent Card Holder

Other Nicknames: Your Tichu Partner, Horizontal Hands
Favorite Games: Tichu, or any partnership card games
Characteristics: You know what cards this guy is holding, and so does everyone else. You'll have to tell this person to watch their cards every round, but the message never seems to stick. He'll usually start the game by responding to your reminders pleasantly enough, but as the game progresses, he may get more and more annoyed with your hen-pecking. A common refrain from him is "well you don't have to look!"
How to Handle: Answer back "well you don't have to play".

The Shrieker

Other Nicknames: The Heart-Stopper, The Spaz, Mr. Excitable
Favorite Games: Games involving dice or other forms of luck.
Characteristics: This person usually sits next to you and when they get a good Development Card in Settlers, you know it. You may not be able to hear for the next 5 minutes however. They become absolutely unglued when they get a good die roll in Memoir '44, and cries of joy are often accompanied by a sudden leap up from their chair, arms raised in the air, while often taking a cue from The Human Earthquake and reeking havoc on the board. You will still be attempting to erase the images of their victory dances burned into your brain for years afterwards, cuz' they're often not very pretty.

Mr.Sensitive

Other Nicknames: The Cry-Baby, Mr. Taking it Personally
Favorite Games: He won't necessarily shy away from confrontational games, but doesn't expect you to actually attack him - at least not THAT way.
Characteristics: This guy takes everything done to or for him in the wrong way. He keenly feels any attack made towards him (with pieces in the game) deep in his soul that night as he tries in vain to go to sleep. If you ever disagree with him, he may not defend himself, but his eyes may start welling up with tears and he'll get very quiet.
How to Handle: He will be difficult to keep appeased, but at least stay away from ANY negotiation or trading games.

Mr. I'll Tell You Your Best Move

Other Nicknames: The Know-It-All, Your Self-Proclaimed Savior, The Guru
Favorite Games: Anything that he's read one or two strategy tips from BGG on
Characteristics: This guy would play the whole game by himself with the rest of you watching if you let him. At least that way everyone can "enjoy" his wisdom equally and experience the (ahem) benefits of his advice, which is not always easy. Sometimes he latches himself onto one person, and if you give him the slightest indication that you appreciate his knowledge, he will be yours for life.
How to Handle: Do NOT encourage him. Do not give him ANY positive reinforcement. Tell him you may follow one or two of his suggestions if he can manage to win the game using his own strategy. Try to make your moves against him as much as possible.

The Laughing Hyena

Other Nicknames: Guffaw, Mr. Everything is a Huge Joke
Favorite Games: Abstract games can carry as many punch lines as anything else
Characteristics: You hear this person way before you see him. He finds absolutely everything humorous, intended or not. Everyone else usually enjoys a laugh too - but they will tend to stop laughing after 20 seconds. This fellow may eventually need to turn away and put the game on hold while he wipes his eyes and nose and recovers from that move you just made placing two pink camels across another player's path in Through the Desert. Hearing others trash talking really gets him going. And if you play a game that was designed to be funny: play at your own risk.

Mr.Ants in His Pants

Other Nicknames: Mr. Wiggly, The Chair Sander, Mr. Do You Have to Go to the Bathroom?
Favorite Games: Anything that can be played on a table
Characteristics: This poor soul just cannot sit still for love nor money. Yes, it may be that it's been a long time since he's taken a bath, but it's not like you can suggest that as the problem he needs to solve. Either his knees are constantly bouncing, his arms are pulsing, or his hips are swaying to some internal music.
How to Handle: There's not much you can do with this one, but it doesn't hurt to get everyone to run 50 laps around the house before the gaming starts.

Mr. Talks to Himself

Other Nicknames: The Mumbler, Mr. Monologue, Mr. Gives Away His Strategy
Favorite Games: Anything that requires a long-term strategy
Characteristics: This guy invites all of his opponents to sit next to the theater of his mind and watch the show. Not only will you learn the move he decides to make, you'll probably learn his next several potential moves. He may act surprised when you mess up his plans by acting on this knowledge, but it won't stop him from continuing his solo act. "Let's see - if I put this here, he might put that there, but then I'll counter by..."
How to Handle: Start monologuing yourself, but make sure everything you say about what you'll probably do is a lie.

Other Nicknames: The Prankster, The Jester
Favorite Games: Anything with bits he can stick in his ears
Characteristics: To play a game for this fellow is merely a good way of ensuring a captive audience, and a host of opportunities to get everyone giggling at his wit and charm. When playing a game like Balderdash or Apples to Apples, he'll only ever go for the laughs, not the points.

Other Nicknames: The London Fog, The Cologne Challenged
Favorite Games: This is totally irrelevant
Characteristics: He doesn't mean to distract you, but it's happening. His odors are a secret weapon that he may not even know about to give him the edge over his opponents who are trying desperately to keep their mind on the game, and their noses pointed elsewhere.
How to Handle: Eliminate the bean dip, and install a shower system that you must walk through to get from your door to the gaming room. And "accidentally" dump your bottle of cologne on him as you apply a dab to your neck.

The History Buff

Other Nicknames: The Map Analyzer, The Professor
Favorite Games: Anything with maps, historical characters, or professing to have its origins in antiquity
Characteristics: This person often gets engrossed in the details on the map, and can tell you every detail the designers got wrong. He can give a running commentary on how the history of the events depicted in the game actually came about, and is more prone to give high marks to a game for historically accuracy than for playability or the gaming experience.

Mr. Gives Up Easily

Other Nicknames: The Whiner, The Quitter, The Pessimist
Favorite Games: This is irrelevant. He can have the first move in Tic-Tac-Toe and still might complain.
Characteristics: This fellow can only be counted on to last a few turns into a game before he calls it quits. The funny thing is, a lot of the time he's actually doing pretty well but doesn't realize it. Oh he'll probably finish the game, but he turned his brain off back in turn 4 and now he's just going through the motions.
How to Handle: If you want him to stay happy, you have to take on the burden and responsibility of showing him how he could still win, while at the same time trying to keep yourself in a position while you can still win. Fun times.

Mr. Has to Be THIS Color

Other Nicknames: The Component Grabber, Mr. Lost Without Red
Favorite Games: Drawn to any game with brightly colored pawns or meeples. May prefer Candyland over Tichu for this reason.
Characteristics: As soon as the game is broken out, this person will grab for the pile with his personal chosen color. If two people with the same personal color play against each other things can get interesting. The one that doesn't get his color of choice will occasionally start moving the pieces of the other player simply because he's used to playing that other color. This can be a very significant disadvantage.

The Eternal Encourager

Other Nicknames: Mr. Group Hug, The Last-Place Finisher's Champion
Favorite Games: Cooperative games
Characteristics: This person expends considerable emotional energy throughout the whole game making sure that everyone feels like they're doing good. Even if the final score is 100-50-2, he'll try his best to make the person with 2 points feel great about getting that third-place ribbon. He often does rather poorly himself, but will walk away hoping that everyone else feels a lot better about their abilities. It's not about the best strategy, it's about knowing you survived the game. Often these people tend to favor the shallower types of games.

Mr. I've Got A Song For Every Game

Other Nicknames: Singin' Fool

Favorite Games: Any games with characters or events that remind him of a song.

Characteristics: Sings - usually loudly, off key and repetitively - "theme songs" for his favorite characters, cards and events in a game.

How to Handle: Bring earplugs; or you could just sing along and laugh about it.

Mr. My-Way-or-the-Highway
Other Nicknames: Mr. I'll-Take-My-Marbles-And-Go-Home
Favorite Games: Caylus, Puerto Rico, any total or near-total information game
Characteristics: Has 2 or 3 favorite games, of which he considers himself an expert, and refuses to play anything else.
How to Handle: He gets to choose the games with the same frequency as everyone else. If he chooses not to play - small loss.

In my son's high-school poker circle, one player left in a huff when it was suggested that they play five-card draw rather than his favorite, which has Texas Hold 'em.

The Engineer

Other Nicknames: The Component Artist, Michaelangelo
Favorite Games: Settlers of Catan, or any game that has a lot of stackable bits
Characteristics: This fellow's personality may overlap with The Obsessive Compulsive Component Organizer, but his focus is more on creating works of art and building structures than keeping his components neat and tidy. While the rest of your opponents are producing "works" in Princes of Florence, this guy is physically creating a "work" as he builds a castle out of cards. He may not know what's going on in the game, but he's usually very pleasant, as long as no one bumps the table. He's good friends with Paparazzi-Boy. When his tower or building collapses and crashes all over the gameboard, he's in no one's good graces however.

How to Handle: ?
