"Jeux & Stratégie" (Games & Strategy) was THE game magazine of the 80's in France. The first issue was a quarterly magazine, but the success was such that it became a bimonthly with the second one.

Inside the magazine, you could find everything. Great classics (chess, checkers, backgamon, go, etc...), mathematical games, puzzles, cryptography games, games for programmable pocket calculator, games for computers in basic and, of course, boardgames, role-playing games and wargames.

Each issue came with a complete game as an insert (with counters to be mounted). These games covered a large span of genres, as you will see in this geeklist.

Jeux & Stratégie (or J&S, as fans called it with affection) is mythical in France because it was the very first magazine to introduce role-playing games and wargames to a national audience. (Casus Belli was at first a confidential magazine for gamers only.)

J&S lasted 9 years and a half, with 60 issues. With the competition of video games, and specialized magazines, J&S died a first time in July 1989. Three months later, a part of the redaction tried to relive the magazine. This new series (Nouvelle Formule) lasted for 8 issues only and J&S died a second time in July 1990.

In 2004, a new magazine relived the name as "Tangente Jeux & stratégie". I don't include it here. For now...

There is the complete list of boardgames and wargames published by J&S. In some occasions, small boardgames were published inside the magazine (and leads to the destruction of some pages ;) ). The infamous "Don juans et drageurs" is the best exemple of these littles boardgames. I'm not sure they deserve a full entry in BGG. So, for now, I list them in the comments.

On 68 issues, some aren't listed here because the insert was remplaced by mini-role-playing games (blame the budget cuts). And so, no entry on BGG for issues 56, 59, 61 (or NF1), 64 (NF4) and 65 (NF5). J&S had also three special issues (hors-série): role playing games "Mega 1" and "Mega 2" and a special video games issue.

As I haven't play these games for a very long time, I do not rate them, but I will comment some of them. Those I remenber at last... :p

NOTE: Laurent Journaux (Laurent36) put together the ultimate web ressource about J&S games ! High quality scans and links can be found here (in french):

Talk about "La guerre des Ducs" to old french grognards. For many this was the very beginning... A generic wargame with napoleonic flavour.

Still an excellent introductory wargame. 2 pages of rules with all the bases (ZOC, infantry/cavalry/artillery, combat resolution table....) and a tense and very tactical play, even for a grognard.

Guerre des ducs and Heraklios are the two J&S games I miss the most for nostalgic reasons.

This was the issue that introduced role-playing games to the French.
The mechanics of the game were simplistic, but the map and the counters were great (shamelessly inspired by the AD&D Monster Manual and SPI's War of the Ring - look at the Orcs and the Balrog ;) ).

It was here that it all began for me... Frankly, how could a Tolkien-fan kid see this beautiful boardgame and not become deeply addicted to RPGs and fantasy boardgames ?

Absolutely, J&S #4 was the Big Bang.

Has anybody got a scan of the rules they can post?
Thanks!

I have this one... bought it in Quebec City during Winter Carnival. I can scan it in as long as someone promises to translate the rules (I'd do it, but my French has gotten a bit rusty in 27 years).
