After listening to all this Eurogames vs. Ameritrash debate, I was wondering how many users on this site are predominately wargamers. If you are, just add your favorite wargame to the list. I searched a bit and did not find a list like this, so I thought it might be useful so those of us who are mainly wargamers could connect/contact each other.

Well, This is the game I enjoyed the most, not played the most mind you. I have played many times and always was on the edge of my seat till the last turn. Most games are not decided till past the halfway point but its still the best gaming I have played. I prefer the Battleline version. Second place goes to ASL.

Well, I'm afraid it'll have to wait. Whatever it was, I'm sure it was better than my plan to get out of this by pretending to be mad. I mean, who would have noticed another madman round here?

Wow, I was off the geek for a while and didn't see this list. It is important for us to keep our heads about us among colorless euros and silly Ameritrash. I should know, I've played lots from each genre, and find that they're some real winners, but what I really want to do is play a wargame.

Anyway I have a lot of favorites. Paths of Glory, War of the Ring, Liberty, Rise and Decline of the Third Reich, and Hammer of the Scots all see a decent amount of playing time. In the end though I think the most perfect, unpredictable and strategic game has to be Hannibal. I've played it more than any other game and I'm not bored with it at all.

Some other current favorites include Age of Napoleon, Brandywine, Twilight Struggle, The Civil War, Here I Stand, Guilford, Pacific Victory, Battles of the Ancient World Volume II, Crusader Rex, and Memoir '44.

I got into wargames about 15 yrs. ago with the grand strategic types; however, I discovered the tactical side of things soon after. The Tank Leader series is a great one for short, dynamic scenarios, and Desert Steel is probably the most 'balanced' and tightened up of the three.

I've been proud (in secret) to call myself a wargamer for more years than I would care to mention..cool

I still have a love for miniatures, especially games of DBA, but the painting got to me in the end. My first board wargame was an SPI east-front game that I bought back around 1977 but my first 'wow' purchase came with 'Squad Leader': still have it and still play it.

Mainly play games solo due to lack of opponents locally and currently and getting ready to play 'Across 5 Aprils' which I got in a trade with TIGER521 - thanks mate

I have put Leningrad in as my choice due to its ability to get to my table and as an acknowledgement of its place in my wargaming history.

Most of my favorites have already been taken, but this one Solitaire game I have played a lot of recently. I was lucky enough to acquire this and all of the expansions by trading on BGG!

I actually owned this game back in the 80's, and played it once or twice and eventually sold it. I'm glad it is back and I can now play through all the scenarios.

Some of my other favorites?

Great Battles of the American Civil War
The Gamers CWBS and TCS
Victory Games FLEET Series
Assault by GDW

I'm also having fun with Lock n Load Band of Heroes and look forward to picking up the new modern game:

As you can tell, I love tactical level wargaming.

Possibly one of the simplest, but most strategically challenging games of all. Good three-player games are hard to come by and this one is excellent! Too simplistic for many, perhaps, but for game play I've found few wargames that are its equal.

Other wargames I enjoy have been already listed (C&C Ancients, Combat Commander, Hannibal, etc), but this one is a great multiplayer wargame, with a nice cyclic scenario so you can play over multiple sessions and someone not turning up isn't a problem.

Really needs a reprint - my copy is showing wear on the counters, the components don't compare with modern games.

Well your list has already achieved it's purpose. I was surprised to find that Cabalzero had a wargamer history, as I've just known him as a eurogamer.

I fall into three catagories:
1) I play eurogames for the social aspect. I really don't care if I win or lose.

2) I spend a lot of time every summer playing games with my 9 year old niece. She comes over for a month every summer. We call her VGG. Some people assume this means Very Good Girl. It really means Vicious German Girl. She takes no prisoners, and will crush you like a bug, but she's a good loser. There is nobody that I'd rather spend time playing games with. This is why you will see in my profile that I've played a ton of games of Score Four, Connect Four, Blokus and Diamant.

3) Wargames are what I cut my teeth on, Midway, Panzerblitz, and Luftwaffe. Wargames are what I replay over and over in my mind thinking about what my next move should be, or what I should have done differently. When I first discovered Pax Romana, I would go to sleep at night thinking about my next moves or builds. I have spent more time this year playing this game that any other game. I want to win any wargame I play. Since Pax Romana is already on this list, I'll put up Wallenstein. This may not be a wargame for some, but for me it is. It's about resource management and husbanding your resources. Spend too much time doing all out attacks and you're going to be out of luck. It's light enough that I can get members of my regular gaming group to play.

I started as a wargamer, then negotiation games, then german games, and now back to wargames. Oh, and Dune. Always Dune, the game made especially for jerks.

TK! and EastFront have been long time favorites. TK gets the nod for all-time favorite because of the combination of playability, complexity, and variability.

Recent favorites have been Twilight Struggle, Paths of Glory, and the American Revolution series.

Was suprised to see that there's a TK2 listed for 2008. Will have to keep my eyes open for it. A good excuse to break it open again.

In the past few years, I've been mildly turned off from german games by the favoritism for (1) flavor of the month game and (2) least common denominator games (e.g. Puerto Rico, Ticket to Ride, etc). My experience has been that wargamers tend to be more flexible in their gaming tastes, and don't shy away from longer playing times. Frankly, I'd rather play one really good eight hour game than 8 mindless one hour games.

Fan of most of the 'Great War at Sea'/'Second World War at Sea' games, but this one is one of the better games.

Just recently picked up Great War at Sea: Jutland in the 'Great War at Sea' series, and I suspect that will be a new favorite...but it feels a little dishonest to claim that as my fav of the moment, as it has no plays so far.

'SOPAC' in the SWWaS series is also particularly good - looking forward to the inevitable reprint of that one.

This is the first wargame I played, and was my introduction to Napoleonic games. I fell in love with the system, and it sparked my interest in military games as a whole. This game in particular I enjoy, because it is a 'meeting engagement' with a gradual build up of troops. Also, the significant assymetry of forces makes for a different experience depending if you were Davout's forces or the King of Prussia. The other La Bataille games are equally enjoyable, but some are just plain massive.

My second game in this series was the elder brother, La Bataille de Moskva, which didn't have quite the chrome of this one, but was a much bigger battle. Later, I got the Eylau game...which is also manageable, even for solitaire.

I still think that OCS is the best game series produced, bar none. If you've never played OCs start with Tunisia, a great intro to the system. Case Blue arrived in my house a couple of months ago but it's been pushed aside by Devil's Cauldron...

This is the King of the Wargames to me. I have played full games 10 times and everyone who has joined me in it loves it, with 2 buying their own copies.

The game just flows really well, the early victories of the Reich come from risks and advantages that they will slowly lose, and the Germans must run a fine line between going for short term wins vs. long term gains. Later comes the equally hard choice to either go for a defensive win or to go for an automatic victory, since by choosing one path you lose access to key units (Fortress Europa forts or SS Amries?) The Western Allies start woefully small and must fight as an irritant in Africa and at sea until America arrives with the massive troops required to start a major continental offensive. The Russians begin as a huge army that can't win a battle, and then slowly, PAINFULLY, transform into a juggernaut than may not be able to win the small one space battles like the others, can launch an offensive across a 150 mile wide area that no one else could ever pull off.

Also this game just abstracts everything but the ground war. Politics, Economics, even Naval and Air actions, are simply handled in a way that requires almost no record keeping or charts.

If only I had more time to play this one.

cool This was my first wargame when it was an SPI publication. After playing this I took to SPI games like a kid in a candy shop. I soon followed this with SNIPER and FIREFIGHT...and then discovered AVALON HILL...PANZER BLITZ!...SQUAD LEADER!...TOBRUK!...and then there was OGRE that made wargaming simple and elegant enough to enjoy for wargamers and to recruit for newbies!!!

Nowadays I am focusing on the Panzer Grenadier Series. It is really an underestimated series that bears looking into. I believe they do the Leadership mechanic better that Combat Commander Europe which can be way too random.

How can you limit us to just one wargame!!!
