Building up a list of some of the exceptional artwork in games - As I am a graphic artist and gamer (not PC though, in fact I am so bored of PC games even such beautiful graphics as Medieval Total War II) I purchased METW just to show of the graphics on my new iMac 20" Screen. Anyway enough of that...

There is some great artwork I have seen - color and black and white - in many games. So here is a collection I think of some of the best I have seen...

Maybe BGG should hold an annual BGGAA - Board Game Geek Art Award? (Well I dont think monopoly or many wargames would really qualify - and there is no reason why wargames that are an in depth historical feast should suffer from so much poor artwork)

Please feel free to add some great artwork in games you have or have seen as well...

Enjoy

LL arrrh

PS: These are not in any particular order as I keep discovering and appreciating great game artwork!

Absolutely gorgeous art. The quality of the art *really* adds to a game for me. It doesn't make or break it, but if the art is great... so much the better!

I like the building art, but I think the art on the (basic) characters is terrible. None of them look right for the character and a couple look quite similar - I think these lessen the atmosphere of the game.

This is way up on my design and artwork appreciation for the atmosphere and background it brings to the overall game. Powerfully the artists have captured some of the most valiant aspects of medieval fantasy miniature gaming!

Again a beauty in the artist department and highly collectable just for the fans of the art. Sometimes that is my weakness. I buy things that look visually stunning. (This list is not about gameplay, but a mere visually appreciation of the talents of the graphic artists and designers) - I think this CCG plays well also ;-)

The majority of the artwork was mediocre for me. The same company also produces L5R CCG in which the quality of artwork varies also but the thing that sets these artwork from majority of other CCGs is there is a lot of actions portrayed in many of the artwork done. Also, it is neat to see Asian themed artwork.

It's somewhat a matter of scope. Anachronism had only a few pictures to fill, for an average Warlord expansion it was more than 150.

The quality of art in Warlord had been declining in order to try to save cost. Now with the now double-starter format we have picked up on the art again.

This game caught my attention for a little while and i still think it is a reasonable game. The artwork has continued to improve for this CCG (or MCG - Movable Card Game as some prefer). Despite some stupid aspects to the game design it has a lot of potential. However good consistancy in their artowrk is amiss, some cultures - France and Briton are excellent - others (but not all) are pretty poor. The quality of the actual printing and cards themselves is one of the best around though.

Here is the playmat I designed for my use...

Whilst the actual artwork is not 'fantastic' I have added this as the above mod is a great attempt to improve and customise the game in the art department!

Well done arrrh

Hmm, I didn't know that Albrecht Dürer was a mayor of Puerto Rico..
But seriously, Mike Doyle's custom artwork is really beautiful.

Now this game may not play well, (that is not the purpose of this list), but the artwork is great. By the famous Michael Menzel who has illustrated a large number of games! See his web here...

I like his anime style - deep colors and shadows...

Terrific cover! And I'm saying that as someone who otherwise shuns manga.

The cards in this game are a beautiful addition to any collector of 'fine art' games. They are rich in theme and atmosphere that sourrounds the French Court.
