For many, this is the greatest time of the year. The weather becomes tolerable for most, and the sound of a wooden bat smacking a leather ball is music to the ears. It's baseball season!!

Which led me to the basement and the game collection. And memories of springtimes in the past. Rainy Saturdays spent with cardboard and dice and disks. Rooting for my favorites (the Orioles typically) to get the better of their hated rivals (Tigers, Yankees and Red Sox).

So, a Geeklist celebrating my baseball game favorites (and some memories). Please feel free to add games and comments.

The granddaddy of them all. Love the advanced rules and the depth of game play. Have most of the seasons from 1987 onward, although I've been lax of late.

Brought it out of mothballs last season when the wife took the kiddies out for the day and I was home sick. It was like being 15 again.

The bar to which all other baseball games is measured (for better or worse)

One of the first baseball board games that I ever played. It belonged to my best friend (Jim Hunt) and we'd meet up over at his house and tangle. My Orioles against his Tigers. Why is it I could NEVER get Brooks Robinson to perform???? (this was back in '71 or so). Maybe it was his home field advantage, but I rarely won.

Maybe I'm fond of this one because of WHEN I had it. It was 1978/1979 and the Orioles were GOOD (ah...Palmer, McGregor, Flanagan, Martinez!)! That spring/summer, I can vividly remember me and David Sawicki waging a pitched battle for days at a time between my Orioles and his Red Sox. Fred Lynn was a beast, but I had the pitching of Jim Palmer and Dennis Martinez!

Simple roll and check a sheet game, but it was fun. Seemed to be very high scoring as well, if memory serves. The results card was a huge piece of cardboard that always reminded me of an outfield wall.

Alas, this game of mine was lost in the "great purge of 1985" when I went off to college and everything in my room that wasn't nailed down, was tossed.cry

Not the greatest game in the world, but the bits made up for it. Figures for your players rather than cardboard. Awesome!

Granted, WizKids blew it by a) making the 2004 game completely incompatible with the 2005 game and b) not knowing how to market the game, but the game was still enjoyable, if not utterly simple.

Actually got my oldest to try a game of this last year. It was simple enough for a non-baseball geek like him, but held enough interest for me.

Besides, did I mention that having Miguel Tejada in clix form was just TOO COOL?!

Another game in the collection, and this one saw A LOT of game play. Once season, I took my Orioles and played out a 50 game "season". Hey, that was a ton for a kid like me! Got some great stats.

And the box looked cool on the shelf! Not the long, lean boxes of "kids games". This was a game that you could stick on your SHELF! OK, so I was a geeky kid who got a kick out of that kind of stuff.

I was working at a hobby shop back in the early 90's and picked up this one. Had played PtP on the computer and loved the realism. When I found that it was a board game to boot, I had to have it!

Typical dice/results baseball game, but some nice bits. And I loved that the inside of the box looked like a stadium (hey, I like that stuff).

Got several of the seasons for this game, and if I had to scare one up for my youngest (in years to come), I think I'd wean him on this one before throwing Strat-o-matic at him.

I remember buying this one only because of the great Oriole teams that were represented (and the hated '84 Tigers).

The '69 Orioles were awesome because of their pitching (Palmer, Dobson, Cuellar, McNally) and had awesome hitters (Frank Robinson!). And it was the great Statis-Pro system (cards replaced dice for results!)

And finally, probably the one that I got the MOST play out of all time. The great, Statis-Pro baseball.

Wasn't the greatest baseball game out there, but it was damn close. No dice, it had the results cards. Everything that you needed was on the results card. And each player had their own card. I wore OUT the Orioles, but you've probably sensed that theme by now.

Great realism, all the teams, all the players...what more could you ask for?

oh yeah, and I kicked the tar out of my brother time and time again! (he was a Pirates fan..."We Are Family" my arse! )

Almost forgot MLB Showdown.

I actually picked up several packs, back when it was released. Tried to get some co-workers interested in it, but not much ever came of it.

I seem to remember, like the football version, that it had some serious game flaws. Not the most realistic game in the world. The cards weren't bad, and the premise was pretty nice. Wish it had been built upon and the game bugs tweaked. But, I'm afraid that the world isn't in need for a baseball card/game. Kids just don't play games like they used to (at least, not on kitchen tables and living room floors).

Have to plug this old horse. Had a unique rating system that worked very well for solitaire play. After I tired of watching my '69 CUBS fall to the Mets, I made my own 8 team league alla Henry Waugh. Still have all of the stats packed away somewhere.

This one I remembered but couldn't figure out who made it until now (and a few phone calls). This one stands out for a couple reasons

1) it used player discs. Each player had a disk (Lou Brock, Brooks Robinson, etc...). You'd spin to get the results

and

2) I could NEVER, EVER get that stupid spinner to spin where I wanted it. But that's been an issue all of my life. Any game that used a spinner as the results/move mechanism, I've had a problem with. And that includes the Game of Life (I'm shaking as I type...the pain, oh the pain).

I didn't own this game, but my buddy, Jim Hunt did. Was very colorful and a fun game to play. It was the 1968 version that we played, so the players were the old timers. I see that Cadaco has made several versions/player sets for this game. Perhaps a trip to eBay is in order to snag a childhood fav?

This game looks to be a great balance between accurate stats while also allowing for intangibles like hot/cold streaks and team chemistry.

This one is my baseball game of choice, for three reasons...
1) They give you the rating formula, so you can rate your own teams quickly and easily, and your rosters are unlimited, unlike most games.
2) The pitcher and batter are both involved in the results of every at-bat--no unrealistic 50/50 split like a lot of games have.
3) Most importantly, stadium effects are a HUGE part of the game. Each stadium has its own chart, and the game is played on a 28 x 28 square baseball field, with each square representing 15 feet, allowing you to see at all times where the ball lands, and where all the fielders are positioned, etc. You can bring your outfielders in at the end of the game. You can have the Willie Mays catch in deep CF in the 1954 World Series. In most games, stadium effects are an afterthought, but in Sherco, it's inherent to the game.
It's accurate and realistic, even with its seemingly liberal statistical ranges. If a player is used in the same number of games that he was used in in the actual season, then you should get realistic and accurate results.
The other games on this list are good games as well, but Sherco tops them all, IMO.

Another strong, detailed baseball sim -- Very fun game to play. Not a game that you will play too quickly. Some chart lookups but once you get some areas memorized it flows better. I like the batter-pitcher interaction. Range plays were good too as you can almost picture a good fielder robbing a base hit away from a batter. There are 3 different versions to choose from depending on your tastes.
